Berthe Morisot
Berthe Morisot was a French impressionist painter (1841-1895) who demonstrated the possibilities for women artists in avant-garde art movements at the end of the 19th century.
Berthe Morisot was born into a successful bourgeois family who encouraged her and her sister in their exploration of art and, once Berthe settle on pursuing art seriously, did not impede her career. By the time she was 20, Morisot had met and befriended the important landscape painter of the Barbizon School Camille Corot , who introduced her to other artists and teachers. She took up plein air techniques at about this time - painting small paintings entirely outdoors either as finished works or as studies for slightly larger works completed in the studio. Morisot's first acceptance for the Salon came in 1864 with 2 landscape paintings, and continued to show regularly in the Salon until 1874, the year of the first Impressionist exhibition. She was acquainted with Edouard Manet from 1868, and in 1874 she married Eugene Manet, Edouard's younger brother. She managed to convince Manet to attempt some plein air painting and drew him into the circle of acquaintaince of the painters who became known as the Impressionists. However, he never considered himself an Impressionist or agreed to show with the group. Morisot, on the other hand, was, along with

After copying masterpieces from the Louvre Museum in the late 1850s under Joseph Guichard, Berthe and Edma began painting outdoor scenes while studying with the well known landscape painter Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. Berthe Morisot worked with Corot, who became a family friend, from 1862 to 1868. She first exhibited her paintings at the prestigious state-run art show, the Salon, in 1864, and her work was shown there regularly for the next decade.

Eugène Manet supported his wife in her work and the marriage gave Morisot social and financial stability while she continued her painting career. On a census form, Morisot famously recorded herself as "without profession," underscoring her vision of her life and work within, not outside of, the traditional feminine sphere. She participated in all of the Impressionist exhibitions save one, in 1877, when she was pregnant with her daughter, Julie, born in 1878.

Morisot, Berthe
The first woman to join the circle of the French impressionist painters, Berthe Morisot , b. Jan. 14, 1841, d. Mar. 2, 1895, exhibited in all but one of their shows. Born into a family of wealth and culture, Morisot received the conventional lessons in drawing and painting. She went firmly against convention, however, in choosing to take these pursuits seriously and make them her life's work. Having studied for a time under Camille Corot, she later began her long friendship with Edouard Manet , who became her brother-in-law in 1874 and was the most important single influence on the development of her style. Unlike most of the other impressionists, who were then intensely engaged in optical experiments with color, Morisot and Manet agreed on a more conservative approach, confining their use of color to a naturalistic framework. Morisot, however, did encourage Manet to adopt the impressionists' high-keyed palette and to abandon the use of black. Her own carefully composed, brightly hued canvases are often studies of women, either out-of-doors or in domestic settings. Morisot and American artist Mary Cassatt are generally considered the most important women painters of the later 19th century.

    Morisot, Berthe
    painter france 14 Jan 1841, Bourges - 2 Mar 1895, Paris
Grave location: Paris: Passy Cimetière (division 4)
First female French impressionist. She was a granddaughter of the painter Fragonard and the youngest daughter of the prefect of Cher. In 1859 she met Fantin-Latour and she studied under the famous Corot. When she was at a copying session at the Louvre with her sister Edma she met Edouard Manet. Manet was deeply impressed by her great looks and they soon became friends. Reportedly, they also fell in love, but Manet was already married. Allthough she was a talented painter herself she valued Manet's advice highly and she willingly posed for ten of his paintings, starting with "The Balcony". She also influenced Manet, who started to use the impressionst technique and palette, allthough he didn't want to be one of the impressionists himself.
After she married his younger brother Eugène in 1874 she no longer sat for him, but they always remained close friends. She also knew Manet's friend Baudelaire, when the latter was already seriously ill with syphilis. In the last year of his life she used to visit him and play Wagner at the piano. In 1879 her daughter Julie was born.
Berthe Morisot exhibited at all the Impressionist Exhibitions, except that of 1879. After 1885 her works shows the influence of Renoir.

Morisot, Berthe E z O Pronunciation Key Morisot, Berthe , French impressionist painter. She studied with many gifted painters, including Corot . She formed a close friendship with Manet , who became her brother-in-law, and she served as model for several of his best-known paintings. The two greatly influenced each other's artistic development. Her own later work inclined toward pure impressionism in its rendering of light, while retaining an unusual smoothness of brushwork. Her paintings formed an important addition to all but one impressionist exhibit from 1874 through 1885. Her most notable works, including Young Woman at the Dance (1880; Paris) and La Toilette (Art Inst., Chicago), are painted in clear, luminous colors. Her early subject matter included landscapes and marine scenes; later she most frequently painted tranquil portraits of mothers and children. Morisot's works have been particularly popular in the United States, and many important works are in American collections. See catalog (ed. by D. Rouart, 1960); her correspondence (ed. by D. Rouart; tr., 2d ed. 1959).

    Berthe Pauline Morisot (1841-1895)
Morisot was born in Bourges, France. After moving to Paris with her family, the young girl and her sister received their first instruction in drawing and painting. She took some lessons from Corot. While copying in the Louvre, she met Manet who was also making copies of the pictures there. She became influenced by his technique. Manet used Morisot as a model for some of his pictures. She appears in The Balcony and a number of later works. Berthe married Manet's brother, Eugene.
Morisot worked out an individual style: characteristic of her work are its very light touch and great intimacy of atmosphere (see The Cradle). Her technique, based on large touches of paint applied freely in every direction, give her works a transparent, iridescent quality. She worked both in oil and in watercolor, producing mainly landscapes and scenes of women and children, as in Madame Pontillon Seated on the Grass.
Morisot took part in the innovations of the Impressionists from the beginning and she remained faithful up to the last group exhibition in 1886. She died in Paris in 1895.
