Thomas Moran - Biography
  • Books by Thomas Moran Thomas Moran made his impressive literary debut with The Man in the Box , winner of the Book-of-the-Month Club's Stephen Crane Award for First Fiction. The New Yorker compared The Man in the Box to the diary of Anne Frank, and the Los Angeles Times compared Thomas Moran to Elie Wiesel. On the heels of this success came what Booklist predicted would be "for many . . . the best book of the year." The World I Made for Her confirmed the depth and breadth of Moran's talent. "Now, to A Farewell to Arms and The English Patient Time magazine harkened, "add another memorable star-crossed Red Cross romance."
His acclaimed novels have been translated into five languages. He divides his time between Woodstock, New York, and Europe. This biography was last updated in Sep 2002. Unless otherwise stated it was provided by the author's publisher or publicist.

    Thomas Moran
Thomas Moran was born in 1837 in England and came to the U.S. with his family at the age of seven. He was apprenticed to an engraver at Philadelphia and was a landscape painter before he reached 20. He returned to Britain to study the great landscape painter J.M.W. Turner. He married Mary Nimmo, a Scottish immigrant, in 1863. He arrived at Virginia City, MT, in July 1871. He was 34. He was there to accompany the U.S. Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories, known as the Hayden Survey for its leader Ferdinand V. Hayden. William H. Jackson, noted photographer, was also on the trip. This was the first official exploration of the area that would become Yellowstone National Park. He was virtually unknown then, but his paintings of Yellowstone country helped convince Congress to establish the park in 1872. The government wanted information about the area's resources and potential for development. Businesses were interested in putting railroads through for tourism. Jay Cooke advanced Moran $500 against his future paintings to pay for the trip. This was his first trip west and the first time he had ridden a horse. He rode from Virginia City to Fort Ellis, near Bozeman. Then a military escort road with them the rest of the way. Moran sketched everything that interested him in watercolor and took many notes so he could later refine the pictures. His favorite place was Yellowstone Canyon. A month into the trip, he took a train home to do some serious painting. The first canvas was a 7 x 12 Ft. painting of the canyon and falls that he called "Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone." He sold the painting for $10,000 to Congress, who displayed it in the lobby of the Senate building. After that, he started making good money, but he really just wanted to paint beautiful scenery.

Thomas Moran piles on the irony in his latest novel
    By BARBARA LISS
    WHAT HARRY SAW.
    By Thomas Moran.
Riverhead Books, $25.95. 304 pp. IT takes the reader no time at all to realize that the title of Thomas Moran's fourth novel is completely ironic. Harry Hull, the Australian narrator of What Harry Saw , never looked carefully at anything, and now, "on the wrong side of forty," it is too late for him to undo the damage his willful blindness caused. In the first chapter Harry says what these damaging things are, but only at the end of this sometimes affecting, sometimes annoying story can we understand how they fit together to form a regret-filled, lonely life. Harry is a man who knows zip about relationships. Once or twice he says he can remember feeling "on the verge of understanding" how things shift and change between people. But he never reaches enlightenment. "Lives aren't scripted," he argues. "It all just happens."

    Chapter One
Here's a fair one: Born blind. Give that beauty half a moment, see where it takes you. If it isn't near to tears, if you reckon it's just a tragic turn that sometimes happens to somebody else's kid, if you don't damn it as a scabby betrayal of life's promise, then I've grave doubts you deserve the air you're breathing. Give it another moment. Imagine, if you're able, that you've been struck blind this very instant. Shocking, yeah? You're feeling really sorry for yourself. But you've had your go, haven't you? You are not facing a total blank. You possess images of everyone and everything you ever cared for. You can put together a nice mental video, play it forward or backward just as you please, even freeze-frame the best bits. That should help you keep your grip on the world and where you once stood in it, where you might still stand. Blind from birth? Could you ever be truly sure you were anywhere real at all? Or would you feel you were wandering in Dreamtime-as the Aboriginals who haven't gone urban still conceive-yet with none of the ancient abo prehension to compass you through it? Not that any of us fully understand this Dreamtime. It's only a word. Some people here like to drop it casually into cocktail chatter, as if that proves they've some spiritual depth within their Prada-sheathed, tennis-toned bodies. Quite a rant I suppose, from a perfect stranger. It's shame, actually. Of the bitterest sort. A long time back in a place I never should have gone I saw a blind baby naked and crawling loose and aimless on the beaten earth floor of a hut. And

    Thomas Moran (1837-1926)
Though born in England, Thomas Moran became one of America's greatest landscape artists. At age 15, he found work in an engraver's shop, where his talent first attracted attention. Moran was inspired by dramatic colors and light effects of English artist J.M.W. Turner's paintings, and would later be called "the American Turner." In 1871, Moran traveled westward with the U.S. Geological Survey of the Territories. He made many sketches of the Western landscape, especially the fantastic scenes of Yellowstone. These images, along with photographs by William Henry Jackson, helped persuade Congress to create America's first national park. Congress also purchased two of Moran's panoramic paintings to hang in the Capitol. Moran worked hard at his art, averaging 13 hours a day, usually on paintings of Western landscapes. He felt strongly that American artists should paint American landscapes. "There is little need," he said, "of American landscape painters going abroad in search of the grand, the sublime, and the beautiful. There is no phase of landscape in which we are not richer, more varied and interesting than any country in the world." Learn more about Moran and his paintings in our Go West, Young Artist
