Thomas Moran
Painter, Etcher, Illustrator, Engraver, Lithographer I have always held that the grandest, most beautiful,
or wonderful in nature, would, in capable hands,
make the grandest, most beautiful pictures.
Thomas Moran
was born at Bolton in Lancashire, England in 1837, the son of a hand-loom weaver. His family, including brothers Edward and Peter, emigrated to the United States in 1844. He grew up in Philadelphia where he was apprenticed to a wood engraver, sketching designs on the blocks. His older brother, Edward, who was an established landscape painter, provided Thomas with his first art lessons. Thomas worked initially with watercolor but soon turned to oil. He exhibited his first oil in 1858 and made his first sketching trip westward in 1860, to Lake Superior. He continued his studies with local artist James Hamilton but in 1861-62 he returned to England with brother Edward where they fell under the influence of J.M.W. Turner while copying his works. Moran went to Europe again in 1866-67, meeting another influence, Corot, and making studies of Venice. In 1871, Thomas found the subject matter for the rest of his life when he made his first trip to the West with F.V. Hayden's Yellowstone surveying expedition. He was to work in Yosemite the following year where additional visual impressions became the backdrop for many of his future works.

Thomas Moran (1837 - 1926)
Towards the end of his life, the painter Thomas Moran wrote: "It has often occurred to me as a curious and anomalous fact, that American artists are prone to seek the subjects for their art in foreign lands, to the almost entire exclusion of their own.... That there is a nationalism in art needs no proof. It is bred from a knowledge of and sympathy with [one's own] surroundings and no foreigner can imbue himself with a spirit of a country not his own. Therefore he should paint his own land...." As a young man, Moran did just what he admonished other artists for doing: he went to Europe to study painting and find inspiration. But at the end of his prolific career he was more closely associated with the landscapes of the American West than almost any other painter.
Moran first achieved national recognition for the work he created while accompanying a geological and geographic survey headed by Ferdinand V. Hayden. In the late 19th century, the U.S. government made the surveying of Western territory an integral part of its domestic policy. Washington wanted to investigate the West with a view to promoting settlement and commerce and exploiting natural resources. From 1867-1879, the Federal government supported four Great Surveys, each extremely ambitious in scope; each expected to provide a comprehensive written report, accompanied by visual materials. Hayden's own instructions from the Secretary of the Interior were "to secure as full materials as possible for the illustration of your final report, such as sketches, photographs, etc."

Moran has created another engrossing world in this novel set in Ireland. The author of The World I Made for Her (1998) puts his heroine, Una Moss, in the coastal town of Cobh. Una narrates her own colorful tale, telling us early that she is an orphan. Her parents' car crash has left her at least a rich orphan. She lives off a trust and is going to school to become a physician. She has met the love of her life, Aidan Ferrel. She easily settles into a cozy life of poetry readings, love, and chemistry classes. Her grandfather Rawney is her guardian until she moves in with "me best girls," namely Fallon and Gaynor. Despite this, things are not all they seem. The twists and turns begin with Una's discovery that her parents' car accident was not accidental. Then the "troubles" are never far away, no matter how far south one is. She even witnesses an IRA execution. Yet Aidan continues to provide a blissful retreat from any "troubles" for a time. The title refers to Una's desire for the waters off Cobh to hold her up and defy the forces that would pull her down into the murky depths. Marlene Chamberlain (Booklist/February 1, 2000)

Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens San Marino, CA (626) 405-2141 www.huntington.org The Huntington Receives Gift of Thomas Moran Painting T he Huntington is pleased to announce the recent gift of A Mountain Stream (1869), an oil painting by the American artist Thomas Moran (1837-1926), from the late Herbert L. Herscher, M. D., who resided in Altadena, CA, and his family. The painting is now on view in the Virginia Steele Scott Gallery of American Art. This early example from the artist's oeuvre depicts a wild, mountainous landscape and storm-filled sky, probably based loosely on Moran's observations from his expeditions to Lake Superior and the Swiss Alps. The painting will serve as a illuminating comparison with Moran's Rock Towers of the Rio Virgin (1908), which is already part of the Virginia Steele Scott Collection. Although the later work portrays a distinctly arid western landscape, it shares with its eariier counterpart the marked stylistic influence of the great English Romantic painter, Joseph Mallord William Turner(1775-1851). When A Mountain Stream arrived at The Huntington, the signature appeared to read '"Tho Moran 1869." In cleaning the painting, however, Getty Museum Conservator Mark Leonard discovered the additional term, "OP 44." In 1863 Moran began to assign numbers to his paintings, which he recorded in a handwritten opus list, as well as on many of the works themselves. This list, however, terminates with opus number 42, from November of 1868. The existence of number 44 from 1869 implies a number 43, and suggests the possibility of other unknown "opus" paintings by Moran, as well.

Evolution of the Conservation Movement, 1850-1920
February 12 marks the birth of painter Thomas Moran (1837-1926). His depictions of Western landscapes inspired Americans to conserve and cherish spectacular wilderness areas as part of their national heritage. In the summer of 1871, Moran joined the U.S. Geological Survey of the Territories . Headed by Ferdinand V. Hayden, this scientific exploration of lands along the Yellowstone River in northwestern Wyoming and southeastern Montana included a painter and a photographer. Visual documentation not only served to verify textual reports but also stimulated public interest.

Collaborating closely with William Henry Jackson , the expedition photographer, Moran took extensive notes and made numerous sketches of sulphur fields, hot springs, geysers, waterfalls, and evergreen mountain peaks. Returning East, Hayden carried many of Moran's sketches and Jackson's photographs to Washington, D.C. These images helped convince Congress to set aside the Yellowstone area as a national park.

Thomas Moran apprenticed to a Philadelphia wood engraving firm, but by 1858 at the age of twenty-one, he had exhibited an oil painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Encouraged by the marine painter, James Hamilton, Moran traveled to London in 1861 where he was deeply impressed by the dynamic effects and glowing color of J. M. W. Turner. He also visited France and Italy in 1866 to study the Old Masters, but his early American reputation was gained as an illustrator. In 1871 Moran went west with the Hayden Expedition to record the wonders of the Yellowstone area, making annotated drawings and watercolors later used to illustrate articles in the popular press as well as the official report. Moran's watercolors and his very large oil painting, The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone X 144 inches (1872 National Museum of American Art, lent by the U.S. Department of the Interior), convinced the U. S. Congress to set this area aside as America's first national park.
Moran first visited the Grand Canyon of the Colorado in 1873 and the resulting Chasm of the Colorado National Museum of American Art, lent by the U. S. Department of the Interior) further enhanced his reputation as the preeminent painter of the Southwest. In 1879

Can a painting have an impact on society? Thomas Moran's paintings of Western landscapes inspired Americans to save their wilderness areas as national parks. Moran was born in 1837 on February 12. In the summer of 1871, Moran and photographer William Henry Jackson joined the U.S. Geological Survey of the Territories. Their job on this scientific expedition was to sketch and photograph lands along the Yellowstone River in northwestern Wyoming and southeastern Montana. Moran took detailed notes and made numerous sketches of the beautiful evergreen mountain peaks and waterfalls, but he also drew pictures of some sights even stranger than the one depicted in this painting.

Biography

New York Times Notable Book 2003
NEWS: ANJA THE LIAR named a NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK for 2003.
I became a novelist more by chance than choice. For many years, I was a news reporter and editor, traveling widely (and often wildly) from Tokyo and Shanghai to Venice and Paris, as well as rougher places: the northern Sahara, the jungles of Mindanao, the Yugoslav mountains. It was an exciting, rewarding career. I had no literary ambitions, no intention of ever writing fiction.
That all changed when a single sentence suddenly appeared from unknown precincts of my imagination one evening in 1995. The words wouldn't go away, they haunted me, and as soon as I wrote them down, the voice and image of a character, a time and a place, a vague idea for a story appeared. Almost before I realized what was happening, I was writing a novel. Within a year, the manuscript was completed, and a year after that, what had started so unexpectedly was published as THE MAN IN THE BOX.
Another year, another phrase and an image of a character, and another novel, THE WORLD I MADE FOR HER, published in 1998. That's when I said a fond goodbye to journalism.

"Water, Carry Me"
(Reviewed by Karma Sawka FEB 21 2002) "On calm nights, when the soft wash of the sea on the shingle of our bay seemed like the whispers of a dream, my grandda told me stories of the ocean's dead. I was little and never doubted the answers to the questions I asked. We lived at the far side of Cobh, seaward from the quay and the lofty dun cathedral that loomed above it, close to where the water met the shore. Cobh is at the head of Cork Harbor. A dark place, Cobh." Medical student Una Moss has lived with her grandda, Rawney, in the South of Ireland since her mother and father were killed in a car accident when she was a young girl. Una sometimes senses that things in her family are not what they seem, and gradually learns generations of political secrets from which she has been sheltered all her life.
