Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone Thomas Moran watercolor on paper, 1872 Tower Falls Thomas Moran watercolor on paper, 1872 Thomas Moran Thomas Moran, through a combination of good fortune, perseverance, hard work, and talent, became one of the most important American landscape painters. Born in England in 1837 and brought to America as a child by parents who sought a better future, Moran grew up in Philadelphia. There he encountered some of the most important American art and artists. Philadelphia was the home of the Peale family and Thomas Sully. Moran first apprenticed at a wood engraving shop after finishing school. Though he showed excellent ability, Moran found this work tedious. After three years he left the shop and began his career as a painter. From his earliest days, Moran was interested in landscapes. He began traveling throughout the countryside of Pennsylvania, then ventured farther. His travels took him to Europe in the 1860s where he was heavily influenced by the work of the very talented British landscape painter, J. M. W. Turner. Moran then returned to America where, during the summer of 1871, he accompanied Dr. Ferdinand V. Hayden on a government-sponsored expedition to catalogue the wonders of Yellowstone. This trip would forever change the life of Thomas Moran and would insure him a prominent place in American history.

Winner of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame’s 1997 Western Heritage Outstanding Art Book Award Winner of the Western Heritage Award for Outstanding Art Book of 1997. Thomas Moran’s paintings of the American West secured his place as one of the most important landscape painters of the late nineteenth century. His interests, however, extended far beyond the American frontier. Images of Long Island, Europe, and Mexico attest to his frequent travels, while his urban and industrial scenes introduce a littleknown aspect of his landscape oeuvre. Described by others as the “Father of the National Parks,” Moran created the first paintings of Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon and in so doing, he defined the way Americans came to view those distinctive landscapes. This lavishly illustrated booka survey of Morans work throughout his careerpresents nearly one hundred of his works, reproduced in color, along with essays by leading authorities that explore his virtuosity in various fields. The book begins with four interpretive biographical essays by Nancy K. Anderson that introduce sections of color plates of works from the major periods in Moran's career. A fully illustrated chronology of Moran's life and work accompanies this presentation. Thomas P. Bruhn then discusses Moran’s etchings, engravings, and lithographs, and Joni L. Kinsey describes Moran’s career as an illustrator. The book also includes three appendices that reproduce, for the first time, a portfolio of fifteen views commissioned by the Prang Chromolithographic Company; Moran’s “Opus List”; and a firsthand account of Moran’s 1873 trip to the Grand Canyon, written by Justin E. Colburn, a

Thomas Moran Mary's Veil, A Waterfall in Utah, 1873 Oil on board, 1l 7/8 x 7 in. Gift of Fred A. Rosenstock Like many other painters of the American West, Thomas Moran was a foreigner, born in Lancashire, England. After his family moved to Philadelphia, fifteen-year-old Moran was apprenticed to a wood engraver. He turned to professional painting in 1855, sharing a studio with his brother Edward, a marine and history painter. Thomas first visited Utah in 1871, on his way to join the Dr. Ferdinand Vandeveer Haydene expedition to Yellowstone as a sketch artist. Moran, perhaps more than any other artist of the time, familiarized easterners with the landscape of the Far West through his paintings of Yosemite, Zion, the Tetons, and the Grand Canyon. On a subsequent trip west in July 1873, Moran arrived in Salt Lake City to meet John Wesley Powell, who four years earlier had navigated the Green and Colorado Rivers on his historic trip through the Grand Canyon. Moran, commissioned by eastern publishers to illustrate western scenery, was in Utah to join Powell on a second expedition to that area. The group took the Union Pacific Railroad from Salt Lake City to Lehi, a mere thirty of the almost four hundred-mile journey. From Lehi they continued south by stagecoach and team and wagon, and after reaching the town of Nephi completed the trip to the Grand Canyon on horseback.

Thomas Moran The most industrious and eventually the most illustrious of the Moran family, Thomas came to the United States in 1844. He studied with James Hamilton in Philadelphia as well as his older brother, Edward and in London, Paris and Italy. While he did some illustrating, his fame was based on his large panoramic landscape paintings of the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and other monumental sites in the West. He accompanied the U.S. Geological Survey of Yellowstone with photographer W. H. Jackson and traveled through many of the national parks. Mount Moran is named for him. His paintings are in many museum collections including The National Gallery. The Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and his painting "The Three Tetons" was hung in the White House Oval Office.
Moran's initialed signature, following his first visit to the Yellowstone area in 1871, incorporated a "Y" in the center which stood for "Yellowstone" and indicated his commitment to the campaign to make Yellowstone the first National Park.

This state is considered VERY RARE.
Thomas Moran's activities as an etcher spanned nearly three decades, beginning in the 1850's. He was probably introduced to the medium by John Sartain and was one of the many artists who joined the New York Etching Club shortly after its founding. Moran's choice of subject matter was diverse. Although he was repeatedly drawn to the sea as a source of inspiration, he also etched Western landscapes and Central American port scenes."

"There is a mountain in the distant West
That, sun-defying, in its deep ravines,

"The Cross of Snow"... Longfellow Born in the city of Bolton, Lancashire, England on 12 January 1837, Thomas Moran was destined to become one of America's greatest landscape artists . He and his family sailed from Liverpool, England in April 1844 to America. Thomas Moran Sr., a weaver by trade, settled the family in Philadelphia...one of the textile centers of the country. Thomas showed an early interest in art, and at the age of 15 he sought employment in an engraver's shop...the chosen occupation of young aspiring artist of that day. Never really mastering the engravers trade, his drawings drew the attention of his employer. Noting the quality of his work, he was kept busy sketching designs on the engraver's blocks for others to engrave. Moran began to spend his spare time doing watercolors and drawing, which he easily sold for $10 to $15 apiece. In 1856, Tom and his brother Edward, who was also an aspiring painter, rented a studio in Philadelphia. There, they could study and apply their craft full time. Thomas was to show a growing interest in the works of H.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), an English painter of note. His early works reflected much of the style of Turner. This can be seen in the paintings below...(Turner, left...Moran, right) Thomas Morans' first extended trip in search of the scenic wonders was to the Lake Superior region in 1860..."to the shores of Gitchee Gumee". No artist at that time had visited this area.
