Philately Universe Special: Dutch Painters on Stamps Piet Mondriaan After 1892 you could often find Mondriaan along the Gein, a small river in the province of Utrecht. In 1903 Mondriaan won his first prize with a still life. He went on painting landscapes after that. In 1907 he moved to Oele, near Hengelo, in the province of Overijssel. Here he made some world-famous paintings as "De rode wolk" (The red cloud) and "Bos bij Oele" (Forest near Oele). In 1908 he moved to Domburg, in the province of Zeeland, where he met a lot of other artists, as Jan Toorop. Mondriaan learned a lot and decided to spend his holidays every year in Zeeland. These holidays had much influence on his work. Some objects he painted more often, in different styles. A good example is the lighthouse near Westkapelle, which he painted in pointillist style, but he mad also one with big, monumental shapes. Characteristic of his works is that he worked out a special theme. Mondriaan painted more abstract and geometrical and paid less attention to the things he observed. He often has painted trees and windmills. One of his most famous paintings of the time he was in The Netherlands is the non-realistic "De rode molen" (1911, The red mill). But Mondriaan searched a new style of painting and a new philosophy of life. He recognized himself in the theosophy and in 1909 he joined the "Theosofische Vereniging". These outlooks upon life had a deep impact on his style and his use of colours. In 1911 Mondriaan got in contact with cubist works of Picasso and Braque for the first time at an exposition in Amsterdam. He was fascinated by the cubism and decided to give up his residence and went to Paris.

He decided at an early age to become an artist and began a study at the Royal Art Academy in Amsterdam in 1892. There he mainly painted landscapes. After his study Mondriaan experimented with light, color and form. Domburg Period in Zeeland From 1908-1910 he lived in Zeeland and painted works portraying the sea, dunes, trees and towers. Mondriaan began to paint certain themes in a progressively more abstract style. Paris and New York In 1911 Mondriaan moved to Paris. New developments in art were being born and he felt at home there amongst abstract artists such as Picasso and Braque. During World War II Mondriaan escaped to New York.
