Main Page Contemporary Artists Modern Masters: Marc Chagall Salvador Dali Raoul Dufy Leonor Fini ... Publications Roberto Matta Roberto Matta (1911-2002) often described himself as a "wanderer." This is true both in a geographic and artistic sense. Born in Chile, Matta came into his own in Paris, where, by 1937, he had exhibited his first drawings and had become a part of the influential Surrealist Group led by Andre Breton. By 1938, he was painting and had become increasingly attracted to the inner self and the unconscious. He put forward a Freudian theory of architecture and painted what he called "psychological morphologies" or alternatively, "inscapes." These paintings, complex maps of the unconscious mind, were created with the techniques of "automatic composition" which he had developed and acquired as a member of the surrealist milieu. In 1950, Matta returned to Rome, where he lived for four years. From Italy he went to Paris where he stayed until 1969. During this period, he became a French citizen and his style progressed through further evolutions. His work became freer and more expressive. The imagery began to reflect what had become his main concern; politics. His political agenda is apparent in these later paintings, but, as always he continued to pursue the same explorations of the unconscious. In the 1960's, Matta painted a number of mural-sized works depicting themes such as the Vietnam War and the civil rights struggle in Alabama. At present, he divides his time between Paris and Rome where he has continued to paint vast, apocalyptic canvases and murals.

ARTE PHILIPS AUTORES ROBERTO MATTA El universo pictórico de Matta. I parte. Las primeras obras de Roberto Matta, realizadas en su temprana juventud, revelan ya un gran trasfondo místico- espiritual, que en esas primeras obras (dibujos de estilo figurativo) guardan aún relación con un ámbito religioso específico: nos referimos, por ejemplo, a la Serie 'Crucifixiones'. Pero luego del traslado del artista a Europa en 1933, se produce en él un paulatino proceso de apertura hacia un sentimiento puro de lo sagrado, más allá de los límites de credos puntuales; ese tránsito se reflejará en una pintura que tenderá cada vez más hacia la abstracción. Además de la influencia de las obras de Dalí y Picasso que podemos percibir en la producción temprana de Matta, destaca también el enorme interés que la pintura de El Greco causó en el artista chileno. Esta influencia es visible en el uso de la degradación y de los colores sombríos, lo cual expresa una tensión dramática, que irá acentuándose a medida que esas obras vayan adquiriendo mayores grados de abstracción.

Born and raised in Chile and educated by the Jesuits, Matta left his native country for Spain in his early twenties to explore his ancestral roots. Mary Schneider Enriquez Sarah Beckjord will focus on the critical reception of Roberto Matta as an ambiguous figure, one who, though Chilean by birth, was more often associated with artistic circles in New York and Paris than with avant-garde movements in Latin America. Elizabeth Goizueta will explore the symbiotic relationship between Matta and several Spanish and Latin American literary figures with whom he had close personal ties. She will further argue that although Matta lived an itinerant life, with significant time spent in three continents, he was, nonetheless, influenced above all by the Latin American cultures and that these contributed to an overwhelmingly Latino perspective in his art.
