EDOUARD MANET Edouard Manet was born on January 23, 1832 in Paris, the son of a high government official. Manet's passion for painting began as a child. His parents were opposed to Edouard's pursuit of this particular passion, wishing instead that he study law. Manet went to sea. When he returned, at age 18, his parent's finally relented. In 1850, under the guidance of Thomas Couture, Manet was educated in the historical, mythological, classical and religious themes of art. Manet also visited Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands to study the old masters. Manet learned to paint in the traditional style, but his work became more spontaneous after his exposure to Claude Monet and the other "Impressionists." He began to use expressive outline, severe lighting contrasts, bold color and rich texture to portray the world around him. He began painting genre subjects, such as old beggars, street urchins, and cafe characters. Widely considered to be an Impressionist, Manet refused to exhibit with them. His strong belief that the Paris art world was generally hostile towards Impressionism caused Manet, instead, to show his work in the more conservative exhibitions sponsored by the French government. In 1863 his famous Le dejeuner sur l'herbe (Louvre, Paris) was shown at the Salon des Refuses. The painting was of a woodland picnic that had two fully clothed young men attending a seated nude female. The painting drew immediate and wide attention, but was bitterly attacked by the critics.

However, because of the Paris art world's generally hostile regard for "Impressionism," he chose not to exhibit with them. He preferred to show his work in the more conservative exhibitions sponsored by the French government. Manet learned to paint in the traditional style, but his work became more spontaneous after his exposure to Claude Monet and the other "Impressionists." He used expressive outline, severe lighting contrasts, bold color and rich texture to portray the world around him. Manet scandalized the people of Paris with a number of works containing nudes painted in bold poses with direct, outward gazes. While it was popular during his time to paint scenes from the Bible and ancient history, Manet painted scenes from 19th Century history, including one work featuring the execution of Emperor Maximillian of Mexico in 1867.

Edouard Manet: a biography....
born Paris, January 29th 1832 died Paris - April 30th 1883 In common with many of the major French nineteenth century artists, Manet was a product of the bourgeoisie. His Mother, Eugenie-Desiree Fournier, was the god-daughter of Charles Bernadotte, the Crown Prince of Sweden (Bernadotte was one of Napoleon's marshals, and was put on the throne by Napoleon. His descendants are kings of Sweden to this day - but that's another story). His father, Auguste, was a magistrate and judge who hoped that Edouard would follow in his footsteps.
Although well educated, Manet did not particularly excel within the academic environment but he showed a propensity toward drawing and the arts. His Uncle Charles Fournier encouraged his appreciation for the arts and often took him and his childhood friend, Antonin Proust, on outings to the Louvre. In 1850 after serving in the merchant marines, Manet entered the studio of Thomas Couture where he studied until 1856. He was influenced by the old masters, particulary Velazquez and Goya, but Manet reasoned that one's art should reflect ideas and ideals of the present rather then the past. Great changes were taking place in Paris at this time. The medieval centre of the city, a maze and warren of organically-grown streets and alleys, was demolished, under the direction of Baron Haussmann, to be replaced by a planned city of wide boulevards (designed, it is often said, to be wide enough for the use of cannon. Parisians are apt to revolt now and again). Streets were widened and lengthened, store fronts designed, buildings torn down and redeveloped all in an effort to make Paris the most beautiful and culturally progressive city in the world. This modernity infected the cultural life of Paris and was what Manet chose to concern himself. At a time when the accepted subjects for painting were biblical, allegorical, or military, this was a major step.

Manet, Edouard
Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe
Luncheon on the Grass ; Musee d'Orsay; Oil on canvas, 81 x 101 cm The active spirit of independance in Impressionism - if not its style - may be considered to date from this famous work, refused by the Salon in 1863 and exhibited, under the title of Le Bain at the Salon des Refusés of the same year. It is the larger of Manet's two versions of the subject, a smaller and freer version being in the Courtauld Institute Gallery in London. According to Antonin Proust, the idea of the picture suggested itself to Manet when they were watching bathers at Argenteuil. Manet was reminded of Giorgione's Concert Champêtre and determined to repeat the theme in clearer colour and with modern personnel. A closer likeness of composition has been found in an engraving by Marcantonio of a group of river gods, after a now lost original by Raphael of The Judgement of Paris . An Old Master element of formal arrangement remains to distinguish it from an essentially Impressionist work and yet as well as being ostensibly set in the open there are various hints and suggestions in light and colour of fresh possibilities in open-air painting. The furious outcry it caused as the principal exhibit among the Salon rejects was based on the alleged indecency of two fully-dressed men appearing in the company of the naked female bather (an accusation no one had thought to make against the comparable juxtaposition in the work attributed to Giorgione). But the respectable persons represented in sedate conversation were Manet's favourite model, Victorine Meurend (whom he also painted as a toreador), his brother-in-law, Ferdinand Leenhoff, and Manet's younger brother, Eugène.

    Manet, Edouard
    (b. Jan. 23, 1832, Paris, Franced. April 30, 1883, Paris)
French painter and printmaker who in his own work accomplished the transition from the realism of Gustave Courbet to Impressionism . Manet broke new ground in choosing subjects from the events and appearances of his own time and in stressing the definition of painting as the arrangement of paint areas on a canvas over and above its function as representation. Exhibited in 1863 at the Salon des Refusés, his Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe ("Luncheon on the Grass") aroused the hostility of the critics and the enthusiasm of a group of young painters who later formed the nucleus of the Impressionists. His other notable works include Olympia (1863) and A Bar at the Folies-Bergère
