GLASGOW is planning a daring bid to win World Heritage status for its Charles Rennie Mackintosh landmarks.
C ity art and design experts believe buildings like the School of Art and the Willow Tearooms deserve worldwide recognition.
A nd they aim to secure the same status as world architectural monuments like the Great Wall of China, New York's Statue of Liberty and Stonehenge.
T he Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society today announced it was lobbying politicians and Scottish Executive officials for government backing for an official application to the United Nations' cultural wing, Unesco, for Glasgow's first World Heritage site.
S tuart Robertson, the charity's director, said: "We want to raise the profile of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Glasgow.
"M ackintosh is up there as one of the world's greatest architects and designers and his legacy brings up to a million people a year to Glasgow."

Charles Rennie Mackintosh , the son of a police superintendent, was born in Glasgow in 1868. He was educated at the Allan Glen's School before starting his architectural apprenticeship. He attended evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art and in 1889 joined the firm of Honeymen and Kepple.
Although Mackintosh's architectural output was fairly small he had a considerable influence on European design. Especially popular in Austria and Germany, Mackintosh's work was highly acclaimed when it was shown at the Vienna Secession Exhibition in 1900. It was also exhibited in Budapest, Munich, Dresden, Venice and Moscow.
An outstanding exponent of the Art Nouveau style, Mackintosh was responsible for the Glasgow School of Art (1897-99), its library block (1907-09), the Cranston Tearooms and Hill House in Helensburgh. His work, often done with his wife

CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH
GLASGOW BUILDINGS
This page is dedicated to the architecture of Charles Rennie Mackintosh in his home city of Glasgow, where he lived and worked in the early years of the twentieth century. Charles Rennie Mackintosh
Charles Rennie Mackintosh was born in 1868 in Parson Street, Townhead, Glasgow, where his Martyrs Public School (left) still stands. His novel architectural creations in Glasgow were all completed before his 40th birthday. He devoted his later years to interior design, furniture and visual art. Like Mackintosh's architecture, his works of art are almost unparalleled in their originality.
Glasgow Herald building The very narrow Mitchell Street was the home of the Glasgow Herald building for many years before new publishing practices created a requirement for more modern premises.
The lower floors were used as production space where the newspapers where dispatched from platforms open to the street. The upper floors, which have less of an industrial feel about them, were used for the editorial and commercial side of the operation. When Glasgow was awarded the title "UK city of Architecture 1999", part of the block was intended to serve as a museum of architecture - the Lighthouse, entered from Mitchell Lane. Unfortunately it was not able to open until the end of 1999, after most of the major exhibitions had appeared elsewhere.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Hill House
This title is no longer available from the Roland Collection. Details remain on this site for the reference of previous customers. A detailed look at the inside and outside of Hill House, Helensburgh, near Glasgow, with its panoramic view of the Clyde, built by Mackintosh for the publisher Walter Blackie in 1903. In Memories of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Blackie described how he came to commission the house after seeing Mackintosh's Glasgow School of Art. How did the relationship between client and architect and the client's individual needs affect the style of the house, and how are its interior and exterior design related to each other? And how much, or how little, did traditional Scottish forms of architecture influence Mackintosh's work?

The May Queen architect, artist, icon McKean, professor of architecture at the University of Brighton, and photographer Colin Baxter provide an in-depth overview of the Scottish architect, painter, furniture designer, and graphic artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928). Scarcely dead before art critics began calling him a pioneer of modernism, the United Kingdom's master of art nouveau, and the last great Victorian architect, Mackintosh's reputation has withstood the test of time. This handsome hardcover coffee-table book amply demonstrates why, with McKean's informed and scholarlybut never dry or boringtext accompanied by more than 200 color photos, including both Baxter's contemporary photographs and many archival images. McKean doesn't aim to simply describe the work, providing the sort of "verbal guide" so often found in such books. Instead he examines the artist's life and work through a primary biographical and critical narrative and a secondary track that focuses pictorially on Mackintosh's various styles. This page provides a brief biography and useful links on Charles Rennie Mackintosh, whose design style and graphic imagery have inspired the look of our Website and publications. Born in Glasgow on 7 June 1868, Charles Rennie Mackintosh trained as an architect in a local firm and studied art and design at evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art. For 20 years he worked as an architect/designer in Glasgow where all his best known work was created and where much of it still remains, yet he left Glasgow in search of success and died in London in virtual obscurity. It is perhaps ironic that he was given so little recognition at the time by his native city, for Glasgow of the late l9 th and early 20 th centuries was the centre of a progressive movement in painting and the decorative arts. At art school, Mackintosh and his friend and colleague Herbert MacNair met the artist sisters Margaret and Frances Macdonald. The four artists collaborated on designs for fumiture, metalwork and illustration, developing a distinctive imagery of weird, abstracted female figures and metamorphic lines reminiscent of Aubrey Beardsley. Their style earned them the nickname of the 'Spook School' and their work, particularly in England, was treated with suspicion because of its decadent influence of Continental art nouveau. The majority of Mackintosh's work was created with the help of a small number of patrons, within a short period of intense activity between 1896 and 1910. Francis Newbery helped Mackintosh to secure the prestigious commission to design the new

Or search the encyclopaedia: Mackintosh, Charles Rennie Scottish architect, designer, and painter, whose highly original work represents a dramatic break with the late Victorian style. He worked initially in the Art Nouveau idiom but later developed a unique style, both rational and expressive, that is more angular and stylized than the flowing, full-blown art nouveau style. Influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement , he designed furniture and fittings, cutlery, and lighting to go with his interiors. Mackintosh was initially influential, particularly on Austrian architects such as Joseph Maria Olbrich and Josef Hoffman. However, he was not successful in his lifetime, and has only recently come to be regarded as a pioneer of modern design.
