These drawings were for a house that Mackintosh would probably have liked to have built for himself and his wife. The plans show no fewer than ten chimneys on prominent vertical stacks which contrast with the battered walls of the house. As it is the house has strong sculptural presence in the highlands. Situated in spectacular countryside just south of Inverness. The Mackintosh theme is no mere cosmetic in the house, and has been carried through in the interior design. Classic white painted walls, neutral off-white carpet, and complete Mackintosh interior for the dining hall.

Mackintosh, Charles Rennie u Pronunciation Key Mackintosh, Charles Rennie , Scottish architect, artist, and furniture designer. Probably the greatest architect and designer Scotland has produced, he attempted to create a native style for the modern era. His decorative and graphic works are some of the finest manifestations of art nouveau As a designer, Mackintosh was influenced in his early work by the English arts and crafts movement and, like the members of that school, he strove to integrate architectural and decorative elements in his work. Among his finest interiors were those executed for several turn-of-the-century Glasgow tea rooms. The sole survivor, the Willow Tea Room (1904), was restored and reopened in 1983. Many of his designs, often incorporating squares and stylized roses and other plant forms, were created in collaboration with his wife, Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh. Best known of his stark, elegant, and often beautifully detailed furniture designs are graceful wooden chairs with extremely high backs. He also designed other furniture, stained glass, murals, and clocks. His work influenced such important 20th-century figures as Josef Hoffmann and Frank Lloyd Wright See Charles Rennie Mackintosh: The Architectural Papers

57. Charles Rennie MacKintosh And The Glasgow School Of Art
An illustrated discussion by JK Gillon of the influences on the design of the Glasgow School of Art.

Charles Rennie MacKintosh and the Glasgow School of Art JK GILLON In 1896 a competition was announced, by the Board of Governors of the Glasgow School of Art, for the erection of a new building with a limited budget intended as 'sufficient to erect only a plain school'. The Honeyman and Keppie entry, designed and drawn by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, was successful. Pevsner describes it as 'a remarkably bold choice...because it was perceived as being Art Nouveau and lacking in the overt stylistic references to various historical periods utilised so freely by the other competitors'.
The reins of power in the competition were ultimately in the hands of Francis Newberry, the Director of the School of art, and Mackintosh's former teacher and friend. The importance of Newberry in terms of encouraging Mackintosh's creative individuality was an important factor in both his education and the commission for the School. Financial constraints led to the building being constructed in two stages, the first from late 1897 to 1899, and the second (western) portion from 1907 to 1909.
The completed building is a towering rectangular block with almost no decoration, an austere statement and bold break away from the traditional methods of architectural adornment. Its lack of obvious historical references, the apparent over-scaling of the windows, the lack of classical references, the absence of sculptural embellishments, the asymmetrical facade and the severity of the structure caused much adverse comment at the time of its construction.

Discovering in Scotland
It was raining when we got to Scotland (what else is new?), so we decided to go hunting for examples of the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the renowned Scottish architect, water colorist, and designer. Everywhere you could see those strange letters with the little dots under the O's, a unique way of printing that he often used, now known as the Mackintosh Font . In a brochure on Glasgow we saw a picture of a guest room he designed and the caption read, "Toshie's Bedroom" and that was an indication of the affection which the Glaswegians now have for one of their own. It was not always so. During his lifetime there were few who appreciated his rare genius for design, or that of his wife, Margaret MacDonald, and their partners in art, Margaret's sister Frances, and her husband, Herbert MacNair. They were called "The Four," and their fame was greatest abroad. However, when Toshie won the competition for the design of the Glasgow School of Art in 1896 his reputation as an architect was assured. Soon all Glasgow knew his work, and that of Margaret as well, at Miss Cranston's Tea Rooms, delightful emporia where sociability and art mingled. Mackintosh designed everything tables and tableware, wall paintings and windows, doorways and clocks, and the only present-day example of his tea rooms survives as
