Charles Rennie Mackintosh
The first British architect to acquire an international reputation since the eighteenth century, Charles Rennie Mackintosh was the leading exponent of the distinctive style known as `Glasgow Art Nouveau.' He is probably best known for his Glasgow School of Art - it was remarkable that in 1896, when Art Nouveau still made hackles rise, his design should have been accepted - but he was also responsible for several other buildings including private houses and a school. The film examines these projects in detail, and also others that were never realized, such as his proposals for Liverpool Cathedral. Also shown are his posters, furniture, interiors and, notably, Miss Cranston's famous Tea Rooms. Later in his life, when commissions had dried up, Mackintosh turned to painting, and the film concludes with a look at his watercolors.

Scottish architect and designer, whose chaste, functional style exerted a strong influence on 20th-century architecture and interior design. Trained at the Glasgow School of Art and influenced by the British Arts amp; Crafts Movement, Mackintosh rejected over-decorated Victorian styles in favor of a spare simplicity that featured geometric shapes and unadorned surfaces . Between 1899 and 1910 he designed several houses near Glasgow in this style, but his fame rests primarily on his 1899 designs for the Glasgow School of Art, with its austere rectangular framework, long, simple curves, and bare facade. His 1909 addition of a library was based entirely on straight lines and right angles: Its horizontal beams alternate with vertical pillars in a vigorous, rhythmic juxtaposition. His work exerted an important influence on the growing 20th-century trend toward simplification and functionalism . Decades after his death, his work achieved a permanent place in the history of design. In the late 1970s the Mackintosh House, his studio-home in Glasgow, was reconstructed and opened as a museum.

London, England 1928) While enrolled at the Glasgow School of Art, Mackintosh developed an artistic relationship with Margaret MacDonald, Frances Macdonald and Herbert McNair. Known as "The Four", they exhibited posters, furnishings, and a variety of graphic designs in Glasgow, London, Vienna and Turin. These exhibitions helped establish Mackintosh's reputation. With a design philosophy solidly rooted in Scottish tradition, Mackintosh disregarded the architecture of Greece and Rome as unsuitable for the climate or needs Scotland. He believed that a revival of the Scottish Baronial style, adapted to modern society would meet contemporary needs. His buildings clearly demonstrate this belief. Mackintosh created buildings notable for the elegance and clarity of their spatial concepts, the skillful exploitation of natural and artificial lighting, and skillful detailing. He felt that each design should work as a whole to which each carefully contrived detail contributes.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (British, 1868-1928) Biography Born in Glasgow, the son of a police superintendent, Mackintosh is the most famous of the Glasgow Style designers and has become something of a cult figure of international importance. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art while being apprenticed to the architect John Hutchinson, transferring to the firm of Honeyman and Keppie in 1889. In 1891 a travelling scholarship enabled him to visit Italy, France and Belgium, and in 1902 he began to paint a series of mystical watercolours. Meanwhile his furniture designs were establishing a repertoire of forms which became the hallmarks of the Glasgow Style and his reputation as an architect was confirmed by his famous designs for Glasgow School of Art (1897-1909). In 1900 he married Margaret MacDonald , who collaborated with him closely and encouraged his painting. Although his work was highly acclaimed abroad, Glasgow proved increasingly restrictive, and in 1914 he left to concentrate on painting in watercolours. He lived in Chelsea until 1923 and thereafter in France. Gift Shop:

A A new TrueType font for Windows PC's and Apple Macs featuring the style developed and made famous by the renowned scottish architect and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh in collaboration with his wife Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh. The Mackintosh's developed a unique style of writing to annotate their drawings and designs. There was never a Mackintosh font as such. The lettering used by Charles Rennie and Margaret varied from drawing to drawing. There were many subtle variations in letter shapes and in the way they were combined. Some characters and symbols were never used. We have tried to capture the essence of the styles in this one font. The CRMackintosh font is only available as part of The Mackintosh Collection CD Rom. The Mackinosh Collection includes both the Windows PC version and the Apple Mac version of the font.
