Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man

Although we are all influenced, to varying degrees, by our parents and environment, the effect on Lowry of his was to shape and dominate his life more than most. From his birth until his death, in 1976, his mother was all that really mattered.
Laurence Stephen Lowry was born in Old Trafford,
Manchester (UK), on November 1st, 1887, to Robert and Elizabeth. However, from the beginning he was a
disappointment to his mother. She desperately wanted a girl,
and initially found it hard to even look at the child. In later years she would complain to her sister,
Mary, that she had one "clumsy boy" as opposed to her "three splendid daughters". Fortunately Laurie's father was as enthusiastic about his son as his mother was cold. In addition, the child's birth had been difficult, and Elizabeth never fully recovered her health afterwards. Lowry was to grow up with a sense of guilt and indebtedness towards his mother.

A fine bronze model of Wellington by Count D’Orsay, French, mid 19th-century, sold for £5,800 Peace of Mind
Over £10 million is the estimated value of art and antiques stolen each week within the United Kingdom.
Many victims of crime are further frustrated when their recovered property cannot be released by the police due to insufficient documentation. This was the principal reason that led to the establishment of Asset Guardian by BAFRA member Raymond Konyn and former Lloyd’s broker, Stephen Laing. Operations are run in conjunction with Raymond’s restoration business in north Kent with the main objective of providing clients with theft deterrence and documentary proof of ownership. This is achieved by offering up to four methods of describing an antique.

Visual Arts Pictures of matchstickmen By David Freak, What's On When lists of the most influential British artists of the 20th century are compiled, one name is always excluded: LS Lowry. Twenty-eight years after his death in 1976, his work has been pushed to the sides of art history, left for postcards, chocolate boxes and prints. It's a name unlikely to be mentioned in the same breath as Hockney, Moore or Hepworth, but working in isolation away from many of the trends of the day, he created a popular and enduring vision of the industrial north of England, the influence of which can certainly be seen in contemporary artists such as Mackenzie Thorpe. Born in 1887, the son of an estate agent, Laurence Stephen Lowry spent 40 years of his working life in Manchester and Salford where he pounded the streets as a humble rent collector, giving him ample opportunity to observe potential subject matter. Studying art for the best part of 20 years alongside this career, he began exhibiting in group shows from the mid-20s before an art dealer spotted one of his paintings leaning against a wall at a London framers in 1938.
