Frederic Leighton: Antiquity, Renaissance, and Modernity
- Book Reviews, by Tim Berringer (Editor), Elizabeth Prettejohn (Editor)
From the Publisher

This original collection of writings reinterprets the art of Frederic Leighton (1830-1896), challenging the view that limits him to the category of 'Victorian artist' and revealing his broader significance in the history of modern art. The book is the first to extend the discussion of Leighton beyond his life and works to address such current concerns as gender and sexuality, the artist's identity and self-positioning, and Leighton's position in relation to Aestheticism and Modernism. The contributors argue that not only does Leighton's profound commitment to the ancient and renaissance past not exclude him from an important role in modern art, but indeed it assures his position there.

Artist Frederic, Lord Leighton is one of the titans of Victorian art. His classically inspired paintings are as much admired for their dignity and grace as for their flawlessly beautiful technique. For these reasons, Leighton was a well respected and successful artist even during his own lifetime. Indeed, his glorious artistic career represented the pinnacle of achievement for a painter during Victoria's reign. Frederic Leighton was born in Scarborough, England, in 1830. The early years of his life were spent travelling and absorbing European art and culture. This exposure to some of the world's great art works must have had a lasting impression on the young man, and influenced Leighton's decision to become an artist himself. Inspiration from Italy, for example, can be seen in such paintings as A Roman Lady (La Nanna) of 1859 and the equally striking Pavonia , which was painted in the same year. In time, Leighton's mature style emerged. Leighton tended to focus on Classical subjects, such as

    Frederick Lord Leighton PRA (1830-1896)
"Sir Frederick Leighton maintains a level of excellence that would be wonderful if the reason of it were not so manifest. He invariably sets up a lofty standard, and to that standard he as invariably attains; for he knows his own power so accurately, and in accomplishment is so certain, that he is as unlikely of failure as he is indisposed to shoot beyond the mark which he presumably regards as his limit" - Magazine of Art Head of a Girl Frederick Leighton regarded himself as of a very different School to that of the Pre-Raphaelites , yet was friends with many of them, and from our perspective we can see close links between his Aesthetic Classicism and the Pre-Raphaelite style. He was for a time the pupil of Edward von Steinle, a follower of the Nazarenes, who were also directly inspirational to the Pre-Raphaelites. In the 1860s, Leighton made some illustrations for George Elliot's Romola , some of which look very Pre-Raphaelite. Leighton studied almost entirely on the Continent, in Germany, France, Belgium and Italy. It was while he was in Rome that he was visited by the novelist Thackeray, who on returning to London, commented to Millais that he "should look to his laurels... as there is a young fellow called Leighton in Rome ... who if I'm not mistaken, will one day be President of the Royal Academy." Leighton did indeed become PRA before Millais, in 1878. After his death in 1896, Millais finally achieved the position, but occupied it only for a short time before his own demise.

Frederic, Lord Leighton was - and still is - an important and influential Victorian artist. During the Nineteenth century, Leighton reigned as one of the most fashionable and significant painters of his time. Indeed, he was so well regarded as a painter that he was made President of the Royal Academy in 1878. And the reason that Lord Leighton was so successful during his lifetime is simple - his paintings brilliantly captured the Victorian nostalgia and longing for the glorious "Golden Age" of ancient Greece and Rome. In classically inspired works such as Clytie Idyll , and Greek Girls Picking up Pebbles by the Sea , Leighton depicted an idealized vision of the past that perfectly appealed to the sensibilities of the time. Combining a flawless painting technique with a keen sense for color and composition, the artist created some of the most beautiful - and memorable - images made during the Nineteenth century. Frederic Leighton (British, 1830-1896) Biography
The acknowledged leader of the Victorian classical school of painting, Frederic Leighton was born in Scarborough, the son of a doctor. His grandfather, Sir James Leighton, was court physician to Czar Alexander I of Russia; and Sir James' son was also a doctor. Soon after Nicholas I became Czar in 1825 the Leighton family left Russia and spent the ensuing years travelling around Europe, giving their only son, Frederic, first-hand acquaintance with its cultural and artistic treasures. Unlike most major artists of the nineteenth century Leighton did not study at the Royal Academy Schools, but received his training in Brussels, Paris and Frankfurt. In 1852 he went to live in Rome, where he moved in a large artistic circle which included Thackeray, Robert Browning and some of the most important French painters of the time. On his return to England in 1855, his historical painting

Frederic Leighton. Bianca, Oil on canvas, approximately 14 x 19.5 inches. Leighton House, London. Aside from its title, this painting has little to do with The Taming of the Shrew or Bianca, the sister of Kate the shrew. Pictures of beautiful women were popular with the Victorians and this half-length portrait is in the same genre as the painting of Desdemona that Leighton contributed to the exhibition of of Shakespeare's heroines commissioned by the Graphic in 1888. The woman who posed as Bianca was Dorothy Dene, an actress who was one of Leighton's favorite models and appeared in many of his later works.
