G ustav Klimt est né le 14 juillet 1862 à Baumgarten dans la banlieue de Vienne en Autriche. Il est le second d'une famille de sept enfants, dont le père Ernest Klimt exerce le modeste métier d'orfèvre ciseleur, et dont la mère Anna Finster est chanteuse lyrique. Gustav Klimt démontre son réel goût pour les arts et pour la décoration, et entre dès 1876 à l'Ecole des Arts Décoratifs de Vienne où il suit les cours de peinture du professeur Laufberger. Son habileté et la finesse de ses travaux sont rapidement reconnus et il se voit confier de nombreuses décoration de murs et de plafonds de villas, mais aussi de théâtres et édifices publics. C'est ainsi qu'il décore la salle de réunion du Palais Sturany à Vienne, puis une salle du Château Royal de Palesch en Roumanie, ainsi que la Villa Hermès de Lainz ou encore les escaliers du Burgtheatrer de Vienne. L'évènement le plus important dans ces années là est l'achèvement de la décoration de l'escalier du Kunshistorisches Museum qu'il mène à bien, malgré le décés du maître d'oeuvre de ce travail conduit par le peintre Hans Mackart, lequel travail consolide encore sa réputation.

The son of a goldsmith, Klimt studied art in Vienna between the ages of 14 and 20. As early as 1880 he was accepting commissions for decorative murals. In 1897 he was one of the founders and the first president of the Vienna Secession. His early work shows the influence of the historical painter Hans Makart, but he soon abandoned this style and found his own, one strongly influenced by his discovery of the Byzantine mosaics in Ravenna. The gold ground and iridescent tones of the mosaics appear in much of Klimt's later work. In 1912, as a result of a conflict with the Secession, he resigned and became president of the Austrian Artists' union. Just as Munch can be associated with both Symbolism and Expressionism , so the art of the Austrian painter, Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), is a curious and elegant synthesis of Symbolism and Art Nouveau. The Austrians responded enthusiastically to the decorative artifice of Art Nouveau, and Klimt is almost artifice incarnate. He painted large ornamental friezes of allegorical scenes, and produced fashionable portraits, uniting the stylized shapes and unnatural colors of Symbolism with his own essentially harmonious concept of beauty. Klimt, Gustav Vienna, 1862-1918 Fu allievo di Ferdinand Laufberger alla Scuola Statale d'Arti e Mestieri di Vienna (1876-1883). Dipinse ritratti, soggetti storici e allegorici, prima nell'ambito della tradizione, poi, attraverso forme personalissime risultate anche da contatti con Beardsley, Toorop e con l'architetto Mackintosh, nell'ambito dell'Art Nouveau. Nel 1900 ottenne la "Medaille d'honneur" all'Esposizione Universale di Parigi e in seguito ampi riconoscimenti in tutta Europa. Nel 1908 fu premiato con Medaglia d'oro all'Esposizione Internazionale di Roma (dove ebbe il primo premio nel 1911). La Biennale di Venezia del 1910 gli dedicò una personale. Fu il rappresentante più in vista del "Jugendstil", e il fondatore della "Secessione Viennese", un movimento di rottura che ebbe influssi evidenti su un gruppo di artisti di grande rilievo, come Munch, Hodler, Vallotton, Schiele e Kokoschka. I giudizi della critica, lui vivo in gran parte entusiastici, gli furono poi fino a qualche anno fa concordemente contrari. «Si riconnette a questo ambito (decorativismo con inflessioni artificiose e floreali della scuola viennese prima del 1915) la pittura di Klimt, così celebrata ai suoi tempi e così ambigua e falsa per la nostra sensibilità, ricercatrice di cadenze ritmiche, al servizio di un simbolismo morbido e allusivo»
