Die Sommerausstellung in der Balinger Stadthalle ist dem Maler und Grafiker Paul Klee gewidmet. Die von 28. Juli bis 30. September dauernde Bilderschau trägt den Titel »Jahre der Meisterschaft 1917 bis1933«. Mit Paul Klee wird ein Künstler präsentiert, der einen unverwechselbaren und eigenwilligen Weg in der Entwicklung hin zur Moderne eingeschlagen hat und dadurch zu einem der bedeutendsten Künstler in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts geworden ist. Die Balinger Ausstellung konzentriert sich auf die Jahre von Klees »Meisterschaft«, von 1917 bis 1933, und zeigt Werke dieser Schaffensperiode, darunter auch Arbeiten der von Klee selbst so bezeichneten »Sonderklasse«, die Klee für seine eigene Sammlung reserviert hatte, weil sie für ihn besonders wichtig und richtungsweisend waren. Ergänzend zu dieser Hauptphase werdenWerke der früheren Periode wie auch aus dem Spätwerk ausgestellt. Im November 1920 wurde Klee an das Staatliche Bauhaus in Weimar berufen. Dort arbeitet er als Formmeister in der Buchbinderei und in der Glaswerkstatt. In dieser Zeit gründet er auch zusammen mit Feininger, Kandinsky und Jawlensky die Verbindung »Die Blaue Vier«. Neben der Zeit am Bauhaus ist die Rezeption von Klees Werk in Frankreich von entscheidender Bedeutung. Die Ausstellung wird organisiert in Zusammenarbeit mit der Klee-Stiftung Bern. Wie bei allen vorausgegangenen Ausstellungen in der Balinger Stadthalle ist der verantwortliche Leiter Dr. Roland Doschka. Der Überblick wird ermöglicht durch Leihgaben der Sammlungen Angela Rosengart in Luzern sowie Heinz Berggruen in Berlin und der Klee-Stiftung in Bern sowie durch weitere Privatsammlungen und Museen.

His childhood love of music was always to remain profoundly important in his life and work. From 1898 to 1901 Klee studied in Munich, first with Heinrich Knirr, than at the Akademie under Franz von Stuck. Upon completing his schooling, he traveled to Italy: this was the first in a series of trips abroad that nourished his visual sensibilities. He settled in Bern in 1902. A series of his satirical etchings was exhibited at the Munich Secession in 1906. That same year Klee married and moved to Munich. Here he gained exposure to modern art. Klee’s work was shown at the Kunstmuseum Bern in 1910 and at Heinrich Thannhauser’s Moderne Galerie in Munich in 1911. Klee met Alexei Jawlensky, Vasily Kandinsky, August Macke, Franz Marc, and other avant-garde figures in 1911; he participated in important shows of advanced art, including the second Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) exhibition, 1912, and the Erste deutsche Herbstsalon, 1913. In 1912 he visited Paris for the second time, where he saw the work of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque and met Robert Delaunay . Klee helped found the Neue Münchner Secession in 1914. Color became central to his art only after a revelatory trip to North Africa in 1914. In 1920 a major Klee retrospective was held at the Galerie Hans Goltz, Munich; his Schöpferische Konfession (Creative Credo) was published; he was also appointed to the faculty of the Bauhaus. Bio: Paul Klee The following biographical information from The Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia: A Swiss-born painter and graphic artist whose personal, often gently humorous works are replete with allusions to dreams, music, and poetry, Paul Klee is difficult to classify. Primitive art, surrealism, cubism, and children's art all seem blended into his small-scale, delicate paintings, watercolors, and drawings. Klee grew up in a musical family and was himself a violinist. After much hesitation he chose to study art, not music, and he attended the Munich Academy in 1900. There his teacher was the popular symbolist and society painter Franz von Stuck. Klee later toured Italy (1901-02), responding enthusiastically to Early Christian and Byzantine art. Klee's early works are mostly etchings and pen-and-ink drawings. These combine satirical, grotesque, and surreal elements and reveal the influence of Francisco de Goya and James Ensor, both of whom Klee admired. Two of his best-known etchings, dating from 1903, are Virgin in a Tree and Two Men Meet, Each Believing the Other to Be of Higher Rank. Such peculiar, evocative titles are characteristic of Klee and give his works an added dimension of meaning. After his marriage in 1906 to the pianist Lili Stumpf, Klee settled in Munich, then an important center for avant-garde art. That same year he exhibited his etchings for the first time. His friendship with the painters Wassily Kandinsky and August Macke prompted him to join Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), an expressionist group that contributed much to the development of abstract art. A turning point in Klee's career was his visit to Tunisia with Macke and Louis Molliet in 1914. He was so overwhelmed by the intense light there that he wrote: "Color has taken possession of me; no longer do I have to chase after it, I know that it has hold of me forever. That is the significance of this blessed moment. Color and I are one. I am a painter." He now built up compositions of colored squares that have the radiance of the mosaics he saw on his Italian sojourn. The watercolor Red and White Domes (1914; Collection of Clifford Odets, New York City) is distinctive of this period.
