JOHN FREDERICK KENSETT KENSETT, JOHN FREDERICK (1818-1872), American artist, was born in Cheshire, Connecticut, on the 22nd of March 1818. After studying engraving he went abroad, took up painting, and exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, in 2845. In 1849 he was elected to the National Academy of Design, New York, and in 1859 he was appointed a member of the committee to superintend the decoration of the United States Capitol at Washington, D.C. Kensett, John F. John F. Kensett studied engraving with his father, Thomas (1786-1829), and his uncle, Alfred Daggett (1799-1872), in New Haven. He went to work in New York as a bank note engraver in 1838. In 1840 he went to Europe with Asher B. Durand and John W. Casilear . In Europe Kensett studied painting and met his lifelong friend, Benjamin Champney. Kensett and Champney traveled throughout Europe sketching and painting together. Kensett returned to America in 1847 and in 1850 he and Champney went to Fryeburg, Maine, and on to Conway. At that time Kensett made the sketches of his famous painting Mt. Washington from Sunset Hill (later engraved by the American Art Union). Kensett made his home in New York City, but he spent much of his life traveling to the mountains in the West, upstate New York, and New England. John F. Kensett studied engraving with his father, Thomas (1786-1829), and his uncle, Alfred Daggett (1799-1872), in New Haven. He also studied in Europe 1840-47. He was a member of the National Academy in 1849. One of the leading painters of the Hudson River School, he painted extensively throughout New England.

Morgan Papers from the estate of Edward Knapp, March 1942 Processed By: Fred Bassett, Senior Librarian, Manuscripts and Special Collections November 1990 Scope and Content Note: Biographical Sketch: Kensett became highly successful as an engraver during the years prior to his departure for Europe, yet he was not content with the work as it tended to be very tedious and too mundane. This is made very clear in his correspondence, which speaks of his desire for social gatherings, singing, talking, pretty women, cigars, and punch to ease the pains of frustration with his situation. He would also speak of his desire, on many occasions, to learn more about art, especially painting, a knowledge which could best be attained at that time by study in Europe. When Kensett first arrived in England he immediately set off to meet his grandmother and Uncle John at Hampton Court. He also had taken time to visit the National Gallery at Trafalgar Square and other collections, where he compiled many notes. Moreover, he resumed the business of engraving for his American employer, work that was to support him for many years to come. Despite the pleasure and temptation of family and artistic attractions of London, Hampton Court, and Windsor, Kensett continued on to Paris. Here along with Casilaer and Rossiter, Kensett entered into an intense period of study and discovery.
