John Frederick Kensett's Mount Washington from the Valley of Conway majestically illustrates 19th-century America's hopes and ambitions with convincing realism and sentiment. A rocky dirt path leads into a nest of houses , a church and a few town buildings whose rooftops and steeples peak out from a sheltering valley of trees and farmlands. Resting below the massive Mount Washington off in the distance, the valley is protectively enclosed by the mountains of the Appalachian Mountain range. This hilltop panoramic view personalizes the painting, giving the viewer a physical and spiritual sense of coming home. A diminutive figure can be seen reclining under a shady tree while tending to wandering sheep that dot the hilltop. Another figure is walking slowly along further down the path, as if taking in the scene around him.

See also: Hudson River School VIEW IMAGE LIST "Eulogized by the Honorable George William Curtis of New York as "a man of great gifts, and of the sweetest nature," John Frederick Kensett throughout his nearly forty-year career enjoyed the affection of his fellow artists, the support of collectors, and the enthusiastic approbation of the general public. A prolific painter and regular participant in the major exhibitions of his day, Kensett had a congenial personality that led him to positions of leadership in many important art organizations. He was a member of the United States Capitol Art Commission in 1859, the principal organizer of New York's Sanitary Fair Exhibition in 1864, a founding trustee of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1870, and, at his death in 1872, president of the Artists' Fund Society. "Born in Cheshire, Connecticut, in 1816, Kensett received his first artistic training from his father, Thomas, and an uncle, Alfred Daggett, both engravers. During the 1830s, he worked in print shops in New York, New Haven, and Albany, but grew increasingly restless at the engraver's trade and eager for a career in the fine arts. In 1840, he sailed for Europe, where he lived and worked in England and Paris and toured the Rhine region, Switzerland, and Italy. "On his return to New York late in 1847, Kensett's artistic career began to flourish. He was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1848; in 1849, the year he was also elected to the prestigious Century Association, he was made an Academician. During that period, he established what would become his lifelong working practice: he spent the summers sketching the White Mountains, Lake George, the Newport coast, or the Adirondacks and the winters painting in his Washington Square studio. He occasionally visited more exotic locales (the Mississippi River in 1854 and 1868, the American West in 1857 and 1870, and Europe in 1856 and 1867), but it was the picturesque scenery of New York and New England that most attracted him and that became the subject of his best pictures.

Biography
Provenance Exhibitions Literature ... Large Image Mt. Mansfield from Malletts Bay, Lake Champlain embodies the mature style of John F. Kensett, and is a superb example of that branch of Hudson River school painting now commonly called luminism
The strong horizontality, asymmetrical composition, and extreme simplification of forms, together with the artist's precise draughtsmanship, refined palette, and subtle modulation of tonal values, create a tranquil and evocative view, in which water, sky, and light itself are the main protagonists.
Despite its title, Kensett's painting focuses on the watery expanses of Malletts Bay, just north of Burlington, rather than on Mt. Mansfield. Vermont's loftiest peak, Mt. Mansfield is located about thirty miles due east of the bay. It has been a major tourist attraction since the 1850s, and a frequent subject for artists, such as Jerome B. Thompson (1814-1886), Charles L. Heyde, Aaron D. Shattuck , and Sanford R. Gifford (1823-1880), who painted near views of the mountain and its slopes, often adding trail guides, campers, and other signs of civilization.

11. JOHN FREDERICK KENSETT 1816
A critical analysis of john kensett's painting Bish Bash Falls.

JOHN FREDERICK KENSETT 1816-1872 Bash Bish Falls c. 1855 Oil on canvas, 34 X 27" (86.36 X 68.58 cm.) Signed, lower left Museum purchase, 989-0-102
The forest and gorge surrounding Bash Bish Falls in South Egremont, Massachusetts, were considered in the mid-nineteenth century to be one of the most picturesque pleasure-tour destinations in the Berkshire Mountains. The falls themselves were described in The Cray-on as "one of the wildest and most beautiful cascades in the country." They became John Frederick Kensetts favorite among the American waterfalls that he visited and painted during the 1850s
Kensett painted Bash Bish Falls at least five times. This version is most closely related to a small oval canvas (1851, Lyman Allyn Art Museum, New London, Conn.) and to a larger painting made for his friend, James Suydam (1855, National Academy of Design). The Butler Institute's version is unfinished and therefore the date is uncertain, but it may have been originally intended for Suydam, as both paintings were probably once the same size. The small Bash Bish Falls that Kensett painted in 1851 shows a pair of boulders in the middle ground linked by a foot bridge, a cataract below that, a pool of water in the foreground and, as a backdrop, a thicket of trees. Kensett completed the first composition in the year that he painted a number of views of Niagara Falls, rendering the Berkshire falls as Niagara's compositional opposite. Far from a powerful, horizontal waterfall along an open horizon as in Niagara Falls, the Bash Bish Falls are made delicate, vertical, and closed-in. Later, Kensett returned to Bash Bish Falls to paint another version of them, where he presented the cascade as a grand panorama, which contrasts with this work's concentration on their more sheltered, less spectacular, aspect. It appears that Kensett painted the Butler Institute's canvas to enlarge the view he had painted in 1851
