by Jennifer Drury St Wulfran’s is a typical small Sussex downland flint church, recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a ‘little church’. Essentially it is an early Norman building which has been restored and altered many times over the centuries; it is now furnished in late 19th century style. The nave and chancel of today’s St. Wulfran’s are probably 1066-86 or a little later. The tower is c1216 and contains a bell which dates from approximately 1430. It is thought that the porch was almost certainly added in 1805. The chapel was added in 1907 and the vestry was built in 1983. There are no less than 33 existing, blocked and ‘vanished’ windows in St. Wulfrans; there may have been at least six others. The original Norman windows were blocked up when the existing larger windows were made; they were not reopened until after 1850. The present entrance is in the south wall but there is a blocked saxon-style door in the north wall with a stoup (a container for holy water). Most probably this was the entrance when the original manor and village were situated in ‘Hog Croft’ (the field next to the church). The rood, chancel ceiling and most of the stained glass in St. Wulfran’s are by Charles Eamer Kempe (he added the ‘e’ in later life) His father Nathaniel Kemp,(uncle of the Kemp who built Kemp Town) a very wealthy man, built Ovingdean House.

It includes the largest corpus of European medieval and renaissance stained glass in Australia. These include priceless fragments from a series of windows in the Lady Chapel of Winchester Cathedral, possibly commissioned in about 1490 by Elizabeth of York, wife Henry VII, to celebrate the birth of Prince Arthur in Winchester on 19 September 1486. The windows combined Tudor propaganda with themes from the Book of Revelation and the nativity of Christ. These magnificent windows were largely destroyed during the English Civil War and in about 1900 were replaced by the famous maker of stained glass, Charles Eamer Kempe, as a thank offering for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. In 1934 the Abbey Folk Park acquired surviving fragments. They represent the largest remaining collection of medieval glass from Winchester. Friends of the Cathedral visited the Museum in 2002 to confirm the identification of the glass.

The West window [1]
The East window [5] Western Aspect
The West window [1] was Graham Pentelow's first commission. The general theme of the window is the Trinity - being the means to the highest form of spiritual attainment. In the centre is the Cross with the Crown of Thorns - being a symbol of the Passion of Christ. The Cross also being the focus of Christian unity. To the left of the Cross is a Phoenix, rising from the flames - being an ancient symbol of re-birth and resurrection. To the right of the Cross a Pelican in piety, feeding its young from the blood of its breast - being a symbol of Christ, the redeemer of mankind and a symbol of sacrifice. (Also in the East window.) Above this is a Butterfly being a sign of resurrection and eternal life. At the heads of the outside lights are the two components of the Trinity. On the left is the Dove or the Holy Spirit. On the right is the hand of God expressing God the Father and Creator. In the centre of the tracery are the culminations of all three:- The Circle - being a sign of Eternity. The Triquetra - being an interlaced triangular ornament suggesting the Trinity. Within the Triquetra are three sets of three fishes in a circle - the fish being an ancient Christian sign for Christ, coming from the Greek words for Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour. Three in a circle symbolising man's salvation coming from a Triune God. In the very centre is the Creator's Star the Star of David.

... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! Hanmer Local historian Derrick Pratt offers this insight into the history of Hanmer. Hanmer, or Hagenamere as it would have been known, takes its name from the Mercian colonist who first carved out a large estate here 1300 years ago. Only the exterior walls were left standing and even these have been refaced inside the church. The loss of a wall painting, medieval glass, Jacobean pews and pulpit, a chained library, monuments, bells and organ was incalculable. Nick Roe, Wrexham Brian Dee, Northampton Hanmer's most famous daughter is Lorna Sage and her memoir "Bad Blood" depicts life in the village from the late 30s to her departure in the early 60s. How much of her world survives? I grew up in Bicton where we had a similar vicar. The east window by Charles Eamer Kempe , dated 1895, represents the Crucifixion and is a memorial to Sir Nelson Rycroft, Bt. who died in 1894. On the south wall of the chancel another window by Kempe, representing John the Baptist, commemorates the Revd. John Lamrell , who ministered here from 1839 to 1841. To the right of this, a brass memorial commemorates Richard Weston , of an ancient Kentish family, and his wife, Margaret of Newberry, Berks . They died in 1600 and 1602 respectively. A brass plaque between these two windows commemorates the restoration of the Chancel in 1893 by the family of Edward Walter Blunt Near the altar are stones in the floor inscribed T.S. 1781 A.S. 1784 and a slab to John Sloper, Gent 19 July 1688 Kempe's window on the north wall depicts St. Cecilia, patron saint of music, and commemorates Anne Blunt (died 1900), one of the numerous members of the family named on the base of the large monument outside the west door of the church. Mary Frederica Pirrie Dunbar , daughter of Sir William Dunbar, Baronetto Scotia, the rector of that period. She died in 1891 aged 4 years.
