St. Anne’s Church has four excellent memorial windows – the magnificent Victorian Gothic Revival window by Kempe at the east end and three attractively designed modern windows in the walls of the nave: one donated in memorial to James Hargreaves and his wife , the other two to Kenneth Brown and his wife
The Kempe window
The Kempe (East) Window
(click on the image to enlarge) The splendid east window was designed and produced by the London studios of Charles Eamer Kempe. On the 8th December, 1889 the window was dedicated to the Honour and Glory of God and as a memorial to the first incumbent and vicar of Fence. The Reverend William Haworth, M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, spent the whole of his ministerial life in Pendle Forest – first as curate of Newchurch and then as Vicar of Fence from the opening of the church for divine worship in August 1837 until his death in February 1883, a period of 46 years. His memorial tablet is on the south wall of the nave. The window comprises three lancet lights, with a total area of 82 square feet. The central light depicts Christ in Majesty, crowned and carrying the kingly symbols of orb and sceptre. Underneath is a depiction of the Annunciation – the Archangel Gabriel informing Mary that she would bear Jesus. On the right is St. Mary with a nativity scene below. The figure in the left hand light is the church’s Patron Saint – St. Anne and underneath Anne teaching her infant daughter, Mary, to read. Flanking the window are paintings of St. Peter on the left and St. Paul on the right placed in church in 1896.

51. Conservation Of Stained Glass In The North Transept
1m. These richly decorated and finely painted works were made bythe studio of charles eamer kempe and installed in April 1899.
http://www.govanold.org.uk/reports/1994_conservation_glass.html
Conservation of Stained Glass in the North Transept By Susan Bradbury, F.M.G.P., F.R.S.A. The two windows in the North Transept Gallery depict the Angels of Faith and Hope. Each Angel carries a shield bearing the appropriate symbol - a cross and an anchor respectively - they have eyed wings, richly decorated robes, they are placed on foliate red and blue backgrounds, and each is surrounded by a circle of briar stems and a pattern of Tudor roses. Each window is a cinquefoil with an overall diameter of approximately 2m with the inner circle measuring approximately 1m. These richly decorated and finely painted works were made by the studio of Charles Eamer Kempe and installed in April 1899. Prior to conservation, these windows were suffering from serious structural instability, with severe bulding of the main panels, many pieces of glass protruding from the flanges of the lead and an alarming mobility which made one fear that the glass could actually be blown inwards during a gale. Some glass had cracked with the stress of the deformation and there were various previous repairs including pellet holes filled with putty and insertions of wrongly coloured or poorly painted glass.

West Window
The nineteenth century brought a great revival of interest in the Gothic style and in medievalism. The Oxford Movement, begun in the 1830s, brought new life to the church with renewed interest in liturgy, ceremonial and furnishings. In stained glass there was a return to traditional techniques and craftsmanship. With the exception of a few fragments of medieval glass the stained glass in the church dates from 1845 and illustrates the changes in style since then. All of it repays studying. The great east window (1845), the east window of the upper chapel (1908) and that in the Becket Chapel (1956) are notably good for their periods. Especially interesting are the windows by Charles Eamer Kempe. He was amongst the most eminent of Victorian stained glass artists, working from 1865 until his death in 1907. The great west window of 1879 and the Resurrection window of 1898 show well the development of his style. In the latter window the olive greens and deep blues and the use of architectural detail are typical of Kempe's prolific output. The mark of his studio was either a wheatsheaf or three wheatsheaves incorporated in his family coat of arms. Both of these can be found in his windows in the church.

    Stained Glass by Pugin
    - Pugin was one of England's great architect-restorers, and he designed Medieval-looking stained glass too. This page contains samples of his work for St Augustine's, Ramsgate, UK, of 1844. It is very slow loading, but the images are rather good. Of course, now that you know what Medieval glass looks like, this stuff probably wouldn't fool you - the designs are inspired as much as anything by Medieval floor tiles , which he also knew and designed. LINKS FIXED 7TH NOVEMBER, 2002.
    Richard Upjohn, Trinity Church, Manhattan
    - Richard Upjohn was an architect, but in addition to designing this church, he also designed the windows to go into it, 1844-5. Distant view, pity, but note the very rich colours achieved through the use of coloured enamel paint over the top of the pot-metal glass. Do you like the effect? The commissioners did not. Finding it garishly bright, they would not accept the window until he had muted its effect with extra layers of thick clear glass! Style is sort of Medieval.

All Saints Church has been an important part of life in Grayswood for the last century AND WE CELEBRATED OUR CENTENARY IN 2002. Not only is it a superb Grade I listed building in a lovely setting, All Saints has special significance for thousands of local residents, past and present. J ust inside the main entrance, proud parents and godparents have gathered at the font for the baptism of more than 1000 precious children. At the chancel step, 421 joyful couples have been pronounced husband and wife. And in the churchyard there are over 300 memorials to loved ones who have died and been laid to rest in a place they cherished. Add to that the many thousands of worship gatherings there have been over the years and it becomes clear that our church is the spiritual home to many. All Saints Church building is unique in having been designed by a Swedish architect, Axel Haig. His skill is evident in every detail of the church architecture - and the work of several other artists is represented.

440 - Stained Glass: Yesterday and Today Stained Glass: Yesterday and Today By William Morgan IN THE LATE 1960s, I wrote a doctoral dissertation on a Gothic revival architect who designed a number of Episcopal churches in the northeastern United States. He was a high church Anglican who emigrated from England a century ago bringing a richly decorated Tractarianism to these Puritan shores. He was the first architect of Washington National Cathedral and had Anglicized the image of the Episcopal parish church in New England. Yet, he and his followers had been forgotten, and their monuments had not always been treated with the respect they deserved. Unsympathetic alterations or improper maintenance was not simply the result of redundancy, as is so often the case with English churches. Rather, the mutilation or destruction of the past reflected shifting tastes abetted by trendy vicars who demonstrated their "relevance" by ripping altars from east walls, painting over murals, and substituting spot lighting for the mellow glow of Victorian glass. The practice of modernizingor Georgianizing or colonializing or homogenizingour ecclesiastical treasures seems to be a national melanoma. Almost every issue of
