Charles Eamer Kempe 1838-1907 Windows by Kempe's firm can be seen in churches all over Britain. There are over two hundred in the USA and others in Australia, Canada, Africa, Ireland and other countries. Shown below is St. Leonard, one of his early windows at Staplefield in Sussex. Kempe probably copied the canopy from the windows made around 1300 at Merton College Oxford. Kempe was born at Ovingdean Hall near Brighton. In 1858 he went to Pembroke College Oxford to study for the priesthood. Later he designed the College Chapel. He had a bad stutter. This made him decide that he could not be a priest. Instead he would be a church decorator and design beautiful windows, wall paintings and embroideries. Kempe went to sketch old windows in England and abroad. He studied church decoration under the architect G. F. Bodley and in the stained glass firm of Clayton and Bell. In 1864 Bodley asked him to help with the wall paintings at All Saints Cambridge. In 1868 he asked him to design the wall paintings in his new church of St. John at Tuebrook in Liverpool. In 1866 Clayton and Bell asked him to design the Bishop Hooper memorial window in Gloucester Cathedral. In 1866 he also designed windows for Karachi. These led to other orders in India. He used his own glass works to make windows for Bombay Cathedral. He also designed over 200 windows for the USA and 72 for Australia. His output was enormous and his windows can be seen all over Britain.

'Charles Eamer Kempe' Charles E Kempe (1837-1907) was a painter of walls, ceilings and woodwork of churches in the 1860's. The style then in vogue reflected a resurgance of interest to high church practices. Kempe's training served him well, and he started his own stained glass company, CE Kempe and Co in London, in 1868. Kempe was not a trained artist, but was nevertheless artistic, and able to suggest ideas which could be developed by his artists and cartoonists. He insisted that only the firm's name should take the credit for the standard of work produced, and that individual members of the studio remain anonymous. Kempe perfected the use of silver stain on clear glass, which leaves a yellow tint, which could be delicate or deep depending on the amount of stain. His greatest stylistic influence was the stained glass of Northern Germany and Flanders from the 16th Century. He took many trips to Europe, often taking the Kempe Company artists with him. Then on Jan 25, 2003, Mr.Collins wrote, saying he believes The one holding the book is by Herbert Bryans (note the Running Dog logo on the book) panel of the full length figure is definitely not Kempe. I can't, unfortunately, identify the artist however. It has proven to always be interesting digging into the past of these kinds of art objects. For example, the panel, at the left, is indeed Kempe. A least it has a Kempe Wreath signature. Not that we disagree with Mr. Phillips either. It is facinating to unravel. Thanks to Mr. Collins, more news on this to follow. A litle research, now with additional info, we found reference to stained glass windows manufactured by Herbert Bryans of London which may be identified by the ëRunning Dogí Signature. Bryans was formerly with the famous stained glass workshop of C.E.Kempe and examples of his work may also be seen at St Agnes, Ullet Road, Liverpool.

The Kempe Society Charles Eamer Kempe Stephen Dykes Bower MA,FRIBA, FSA; wrote the preface of the book on Kempe; a small extract is shown below. "Charles Eamer Kempe's service to the art of stained glass was fully matched by opportunities for its expression. His work was no more prolific than wide ranging and versatile. He was constantly enlarging his mind and creative powers by reproduction of the good tested ideas and constantly striving with new ones. Kempe combined independence of judgement with strong conviction, both religious and artistic." The work of Kempe's Studio can still be seen in many Cathedrals and Parish Churches in the British Isles and certain overseas as well, particularly in North America. Charles Eamer Kempe aged 23. Youngest son of Nathaniel Kemp, 1759 to 1843. Charles was born on 27th June 1837 Youngest of 7 children and 5th son. Charles Eamer Kempe at the age of about 61 with his dog Nora. Charles Eamer Kempe was a shy retiring person except when with a few of his close friends. He had a speech impediment and never married. He was very wealthy and the fact that he started his studio and did a very full weeks work was very unusual for a man of such means. His stained glass was very highly valued in his life time and despite a lack of appreciation in past years it is now being very much more appreciated by many more people as a very distinctive and highly spiritual style.

Monmouth Group of Parishes Home St Mary's Church Services ... ks St Mary's St Mary's C hurch History You are looking at a Victorian remodeling of a Georgian church which cost just over £6000 - the original designs cost £22,000 which could not be raised.  The interior dates from 1882 and was designed to accommodate 1000 people.  Both chapels were later additions.  Many pews have now been removed and part of the rood screen has been moved to the rear of the church to form a Narthex.  The rood was originally plain wood and only recently has been coloured.  The pipe organ to the left of the chancel has been recently renovated and is such a fine instrument that the church now hosts a series of organ recitals throughout the summer.  The East window is from the well known firm of Charles Eamer Kempe .  The picture which forms the reredos is well worth looking at. Panorama The Lady Chapel The Lady Chapel contains an 'English Altar' with four riddel posts each with an unusual brass base and wrought iron capital supporting a newly gilded angel. The screen features the remarkable ironwork and woodwork of Letheren and Martin. H.H.Martin made the Speaker's Chair in the House of Commons and the pulpit of St Paul's Cathedral in London.
