Her paintings are her biography.' This observation serves to explain both why her work is so different from that of her contemporaries, the Mexican Muralists, and why she has since become a feminist icon. "Kahlo was born in Mexico City in 1907, the third daughter of Guillermo and Matilda Kahlo. Her father was a photographer of Hungarian Jewish descent, who had been born in Germany; her mother was Spanish and Native American. Her life was to be a long series of physical traumas, and the first of these came early. At the age of six she was stricken with polio, which left her with a limp. In childhood, she was nevertheless a fearless tomboy, and this made Frida her father's favourite. He had advanced ideas about her education, and in 1922 she entered the Preparatoria (National Preparatory School), the most prestigious educational institution in Mexico, which had only just begun to admit girls. She was one of only thirty-five girls out of two thousand students.

About Frida Kahlo
Mexicanidad mestiza , a Mexican of mixed European and American Indian ancestry, who was to become Frida's mother. A tragic bus accident in1925 left Frida with a fractured spine, a crushed pelvis, and broken foot. She was to remain partially handicapped and in pain for the rest of her life. This life-changing event set in motion the practice of faithfully recording the painful episodes of her life through her art. Kahlo first met the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera at the Ministry of Education in Mexico City. Having just returned from Paris and enjoying a certain level of fame in his native country, Rivera was perched high on a scaffold and absorbed in the creation of his first fresco when Kahlo interrupted "el Maestro" by boldly requesting he come down from the scaffold to critique her work. Rivera graciously complied and was impressed with Kahlo's original style and mode of expression. Twenty-four years his junior, Kahlo married Diego Rivera in 1929, marking the beginning of a complex relationship defined by mutual admiration, painful separations and reconciliations. In 1942, Kahlo began teaching and her ardent followers and students were collectively known as "Fridos". She was, however, forced to abandon her teaching because of numerous painful surgeries to correct her spine and foot. Her physical suffering, coupled with the torment of her husband's waywardness became the primary subjects of her art, well documented in a lifetime's worth of emotionally charged canvases. These sad chapters of Kahlo's life were the subjects of some of her most powerful and notable works of art.

5. Kahlo Frida
Frida Kahlo.

After having read Kahlo's diary she kept in her final days, Maso became inspired by not only Kahlo's art, but by her vision of the world, and has created in "Beauty Is Convulsive" a marvelous series of prose poems. Incorporating aspects of Kahlo's life into meditations on suffering and pain as art, these poems weave a tapestry of Kahlo's artistic mind, which was deeply affected by her physical ailments that persisted throughout her life. Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo

This is an extremely important, long overdue and commanding work on one of the most significant artistic personalities of the 20th century. The author, Hayden Herrera, is perhaps one of the few best qualified writers to present this indepth, intense penetration into the tumultuous life and work of such a complex figure in the art world. Frida Kahlo, as readers/viewers in the United States by now are aware, created some of the most unconventionally brilliant even shocking works of arts the w...

Welcome to the World of Frida Kahlo! Mourners gathered on July 13, 1954 to watch the cremation of the world's greatest and most shocking painter. Soon to be an international icon, Frida Kahlo knew how to give her fans one last frightening goodbye. As the cries of her admirers filled the room, the sudden blast of heat from the open incinerator doors blew her body bolt upright. Her hair, now on fire from the flames, blazed around her head like a halo. Frida's lips appeared to break into a seductive grin just as the doors closed shut. H er last diary entry read "I hope the leaving is joyful and I hope never to return". Frida was only 47 on the day she died. Her amazing, and many times bloody self-portrait paintings will live forever. Some of her recent fans include Madonna and Robert DeNiro. Lenin in 1922 Frida by Kahlo: A story in Self-Portraits On the afternoon of September 17, 1925, Frida and her friend Alex was involved in a severe Bus vs. Streetcar crash, and Frida was damaged very severely. A metal rod had made a very deep abdominal wound, and her third and fourth lumbar vertebrae were fractured. Frida had received many more wounds too, and she ended up trapped in a body cast for months, as her illustration shows: The Accident, 17 September 1926 While Frida was confined to her bed, her mother brought her a small lap easel, and Frida started to paint. She had studied art before, at the National Preparatory School, where she had met Diego Rivera when he was painting the Creation mural , but Frida had never worked on paintings before. Over her bed, Frida had a mirror so she could see herself, and this was the beginning of her focus on self portraits. Although Kahlo's work is sometimes classified as surrealist and she did exhibit several times with European surrealists, she herself disputed the label. Her preoccupation with female themes and the figurative candor with which she expressed them made her something of a feminist cult figure in the last decades of the 20th cent. Some of her work is exhibited at the Frida Kahlo Museum, situated in her birthplace and subsequent home in suburban Mexico City.
