This exhibition will be the first to concentrate in depth on a single subject by Jasper Johns (born 1930), one of the major artists of the postwar era. Although drawn from all periods of the artist's career, this exhibition of approximately 30 works will focus on the years between 1955 and 1996 and will include painting, drawing, collage and printmaking. Known for his depictions of numbers, flags, targets and maps, Johns completed a series of encaustic and collage paintings of single numbers on a rectangular field, called Figures, in 1955. He then developed variations on this format, such as a sequenced repetition of the numerals in a grid format, the numerals in a double row and the 10 numerals superimposed on one another. Works of this type by Johns have had a profound impact on subsequent art because they address basic questions about perception and the nature of representation itself, challenging the way the viewer looks at works of art by transforming utterly common symbols into richly worked visual objects. Plate 20c About Jasper Johns When Jasper Johns first began exhibiting his work in New York in the late 1950s, he confounded and intrigued critics and the public with a group of works depicting flat signs: targets, flags, alphabet letters, and numbers. The imagery of these paintings, drawings, and sculptures was simple, but their execution reflected an artist deeply devoted to the craft of making beautiful objects. As such, they questioned the nature of language and how its forms and symbols create and are created by our thought processes.
Johns influences our perception of these signs first through what he chooses to depict. Flags and targets are by definition flat objects and, like numbers, they also are symbols that are so common as to be registered by the mind almost without thought. He has described these types of subjects as "things the mind already knows." But by manipulating these images with great care and technical virtuosity, Johns turns them into sensuous objects with lush, complicated surfaces that belie their simplistic design. This subtle act of transformation challenges us to look at something incredibly common in a new way.
At the same time Johns was painting flags and targets, he also was experimenting with images of numbers, which differ in that they exist in the world as signs rather than actual objects. Numbers reflect a fundamental and basic mental process-counting-while also suggesting an abstract ideal of mathematical perfection that goes beyond their existence as symbols. But again, by presenting us with such an easily recognizable sign as a number, something we see every day without considering its form, Johns wants us to re-see it, to look at its shape and material presence differently. He thus challenges us to look at other objects, signs, and images in the world in a new way. Through these simple means Johns addresses profound issues about perception, language, and thought processes.

Réunion des Musées Nationaux/Art Resource, New York, photo by Philippe Migeat LOS ANGELES—In the mid 1950s Jasper Johns, one of America’s foremost artists, began painting flags, targets, alphabets, maps, and numbers at a time when abstract painting was still at the forefront of the New York art world. His choice of these symbols as a primary subject for his work is one of the most famous chapters in postwar art history. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) presents an important exhibition of works by Jasper Johns that explores his use of numbers.

JOHNS, JASPER - MINNEAPOLIS, WALKER ART CENTER - Past Things and Present: Jasper Johns Since 1983. This profusely illustrated volume, published in conjunction with an exhibition of paintings, prints and drawings organized by the Walker Art Center, is the first to look broadly at the period of the 1980s and 1990s in Johns' career. All of the artist's major bodies of work from the past two decades - including those based on the Seasons, Green Angel and Catenary motifsare covered in this study, with special consideration given to imagery appropriated from Picasso and Manet. Many of the works are published here for the first time, making this an invaluable tool for the study of Johns' work. Top of Page Home E-Mail Buchhandlungen ... Lieferbedingungen

Company History
Universal Limited Art Editions, founded by Tatyana and Maurice Grosman, has been credited with the American revival of fine art lithography in the mid-20th century. In the 1950s and 1960s, when New York was experiencing intense artistic activity and growth, Tatyana Grosman was an inspired visionary with the ability to choose and attract the best young artists to explore lithography at her home studio. She hired master printers ö notably Robert Blackburn, Zigmunds Priede, Donn Steward, Keith Brintzenhofe, and Bill Goldston ö who could take on the challenges of the artists' explorations, solving difficult technical problems and developing new techniques which pushed the boundaries of traditional printmaking. Tatyana Grosman was born June 17, 1904, in Ekaterinburg, Russia. Her father, Semion Michailovitch Aguschewitsch, was a newspaper owner and publisher who believed children should read only great literature. Soon after the October Revolution, the family was forced to leave Ekaterinburg; they spent time in Japan and Venice before settling in Dresden. Here Tatyana enrolled in the Dresden Academy of Applied Arts where she met Maurice Grosman (1900-1976), a young student at the Academy of Fine Arts. They married in 1931 and moved to Paris where they lived on Maurice's meager artist's income until 1941 when they were forced to hide from the Germans. In 1943 they were able to escape to New York City. Here Maurice gave drawing and painting lessons and had several one-man shows. He also learned the technique of silkscreen printing and made reproductions of modern paintings.

Art: Jasper Johns/A voice from a quiet niche
Mary Abbe, Star Tribune November 16, 2003 In a career of more than 40 years, the American artist Jasper Johns has occupied a quiet niche in the celebrity pantheon. Reticent and enigmatic, he never has courted fame, provoked controversy or been a party guy. Instead he is widely admired for old-fashioned virtues: intellectual integrity, poetic images and sensually painted surfaces. Walker Art Center's handsome new show, "Past Things and Present: Jasper Johns since 1983," which opened last week and runs through Feb. 14, plays to the artist's strengths. In Minneapolis last Sunday, Johns strolled through the show and talked about his work in a rare interview. Wearing a tweed jacket and casual trousers, he had a genial professorial air and spoke in a pleasant baritone lightly accented by England and his native Georgia. With about 100 paintings, prints and drawings, the Walker show explores motifs that have preoccupied him in the past 20 years: changing seasons, the passage of time, the landscape of the human face, studio memorabilia, references to other artists he admires. This is more personal work than the flags, numbers and painted ale-cans that earned him an uncomfortable Pop label in the 1960s. Legendarily reluctant to explain the "why" behind his art, Johns takes his imagery as a given and discusses it in practical terms: "I made this print. Then I cut the plates up and made these images with the parts." He likes to reuse images. Three little stick figures keep popping up in his etchings, for example, edging along a tightrope high in the air, waving paint brushes in a cave-like space, dancing across an etched vase.
