JOHNS, JASPER
In Johns's paintings, sculptures, and prints of recent years, there are tantalizing allusions in fragments of words, in mysterious titles, and in a kind of subtext of literal images inserted in abstract fields. His use of the cross-hatch, for instance, with its venerable history as the draftsman's means of indicating shadow and depth, is basically ironic, yet another thrust at convention, undermining its real purpose. Johns's interest in paradox, endless ambiguity, and subversion of tradition has been expressed in both small works and vast, mural-like paintings, which, in their perplexing deviations from the established modes of identifying painting and its subjects, have brought him the attention and admiration of connoisseurs throughout the world. The "other levels" on which he professes to work are still shrouded in mystery, piquing curiosity and commentary, as once Duchamp's work had done. Michael Crichton

22. MoMA.org | Exhibitions | 1996 | Jasper Johns: A Retrospective
Exhibition at the MoMA, chronology, selected works, and bibliography.
http://www.moma.org/exhibitions/1996/johns/
The life's work of an artist who has had a profound influence on American art was featured in this, the first full retrospective of Jasper Johns's work since 1977. Included in this comprehensive chronological survey were more than 225 paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures. These works, many from private collections including Johns's own, span more than forty years; a number of the recent images had never before been shown publicly.
Johns's art unites mastery, mystery, simplicity, and contradiction. His methodical working process combines intense deliberation and experimentation, obsessive craft, cycles of revision and repetition, and decisive shifts of direction. Johns also frequently borrows images from other artists, which, ironically, only underscores the originality of his own vision.
Johns's work with allover patterns of abstract "hatch-mark" strokes in the 1970s was represented with seldom-seen masterworks such as Scent Weeping Women (1975). His shift to realist figuration after 1980, and his concern with the work of other artists and with autobiography, was chronicled through individual paintings, pairs, and groups of works. The four reunited Seasons
The exhibition was sponsored by Philip Morris Companies Inc.

Johns, Jasper Johns, Jasper, Duchamp in the mid-1950s, Johns attempted to transform common objects into art by placing them in an art context. His flags and target images executed from 1954 to 1959 heralded the pop art movement. Johns based his painting technique on the informal brushwork and texture of abstract expressionism , attaching literal elements such as rulers and brooms to the canvas. His bronze castings, such as Beer Cans (1960), are also derived from common objects. His later works, such as the Seasons (1987), have become increasingly self-referential, using recurrent motifs as symbols to pull the viewer into an engagement with the work. See studies by R. Bernstein (1985), M. Rosenthal (1988), and G. Boudaille (1989). The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia,

Johns, Jasper (b. 1930) Known for his iconic yet cryptic paintings, Jasper Johns is a key figure in the transition from Modernism to Post-Modernism. He has created art with a level of detachment that runs counter to the egocentric position dearly held by the Abstract Expressionist painters one generation his senior and helped to establish a philosophy in which the viewer rather than the artist is at the center of the creative process. Johns was born on May 15, 1930 in Augusta, Georgia and was raised by various relatives after his parents separated. He briefly attended college at the University of South Carolina, then moved to New York. Sponsor Message.
Johns was drafted into the United States Army in 1950. Following a tour of duty that included a six-month stay in Japan, where he developed an intense interest in Japanese art, he returned to New York and worked in a bookstore, unsure if he wanted to be a painter or a poet. After meeting painter Robert Rauschenberg, he decided to focus on painting. The two young artists moved into the same building and saw and discussed each other's work on a daily basis. Together they created art based on recognizable images of the outside world rather than the self-expressive abstractions favored by the Abstract Expressionists. Johns created
