Titled George Inness and the Visionary Landscape, the exhibition features more than 35 of the artist's most beautiful landscape paintings, demonstrating the important place Inness holds in the development of American art. Organized by the National Academy of Design in New York, the exhibition serves as both a retrospective of George Inness's career as an artist and a focused examination of some of the most important issues and ideas that guided his development as a painter. It is guest curated by Adrienne Baxter Bell, a Ph.D. candidate in art history at Columbia University. (right: George Inness (American, 1825-1892)

Montclair Art Museum Montclair, NJ Montclair Art Museum Gallery Will Be Dedicated to Works by George Inness O pening on November 18th, 2001 is The Montclair Art Museum's new George Inness Gallery. A Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Martucci of Irvington-on-Hudson, New York, the gallery will be most comprehensive in the world dedicated to the work of George Inness, the renowned artist of the Hudson River School, often called the 'Father of American Landscape Painting.' Works by the visionary Inness, an artist who single-handedly transformed the depth of landscape painting during the second half of the 19th century, are one of the hallmarks of the Montclair Art Museum's Permanent Collection. Inness was a visionary artist whose renderings of nature were profoundly spiritual, a style inspired by his belief in Swedenborgianism, the philosophy of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), which embraced a theory of the connection of the spiritual and material worlds. Inness' considerable contribution to American art at the turn of the century greatly influenced 20th century art movements, and brought recognition to American artists in their own right as peers of their European counterparts. George Inness settled in Montclair, New Jersey in 1885, living and working there until his death in 1894. The town of Montclair was frequently the subject of his art, and as a nationally and internationally recognized artist during his lifetime, Inness' presence attracted other well-known artists, and helped establish the town's reputation as an intellectual community and artists' colony, one of the earliest in the country.

George Inness and the Visionary Landscape
by Adrienne Baxter Bell
The landscape painter George Inness (1825-1894) was one of the foremost American artists of his generation. Born in Newburgh, New York, Inness studied the works of the old masters and, as a young man, painted in the reigning style of the Hudson River School. Within a few years, however, he found himself more attuned to the gestural, expressive approach of the Barbizon School. He greatly admired the free handling of paint and the expression of soulfulness in the works of Theodore Rousseau.
Adrienne Baxter Bell, Guest Curator at the National Academy of Design, is a Ph.D. candidate in American art history at Columbia University in New York. She is the author of "Painting Philosophy: George Inness, William James, and the Metaphysical Landscape" and has received degrees in art history from Smith College, The Institute of Fine Arts of New York University, and Columbia University.

sentimento ou emoção que inspira'
George Inness citado em A Painter on Painting 1878

George Inness: The Visionary Landscape
Long before New York stole the idea of modern art, the Hudson River School brought together a wily gang of thieves. The movement sounds provincial, no doubt, right down to its name. In turn, it promises a specifically American Romanticism. Its landscapes survey far more than New York State or the present. They assert a command of nature, history, and spiritual enlightenment to rival anything in Europe. Two compact retrospectives, of Sanford Robinson Gifford and George Inness Both worked in and around New York. Yet they turn out as fascinated with European currents as with the American scene. The results, oddly enough, influenced American painting as it neared the twentieth century.
The course of a republic
My line about stealing alludes, of course, to a book about Abstract Expressionism. By "the idea of modern art," its French author, Serge Guilbaut , just happens to mean the primacy of French art. In fact, Gifford and Inness both turned for inspiration not just to Europe, but often to the Barbizon school. Those French painters, such as Camille Corot in the 1860s, see even the brightest sky through the densest of woods. They stick to a fairly traditional palette, of somber green and gray, but their loose, foamy brush anticipates Impressionism. Working not far from Paris, they imagine nature as the edge of urban life, and they see that shifting boundary as if through a newly clouded glass.
