"Inness exhibited for the first time at the National Academy of Design in 1844 and continued to exhibit there almost every year until the end of his life. Though he was elected an Associate of the Academy in 1853, he was not made an Academician until 1868. He was one of the important early members of the Society of American Artists, an exhibition organization founded in 1877 to challenge the conservative policies of the Academy. "Inness and his family left New York in 1860, moving first to Medfield, Massachusetts, and later to an estate near Perth Amboy, New Jersey. In the early 1860s, fellow artist William Page introduced Inness to the theories of Emanuel Swedenborg, which made a deep and lasting impression on him; indeed, became a major force in his intellectual life. Throughout that decade, spent in rural surroundings, he sought to make his paintings convey the profound spiritual meaning he felt the landscape around him possessed. "In 1870, the Innesses moved to Italy for four years, during which time the artist sent back paintings to be sold by the Boston dealers Williams and Everett, receiving in exchange regular monthly payments. Stopping again in Paris on the way back to the United States, in 1874, Inness first saw works by the

INNESS, George , landscape painter, born in Newburg, N. Y., 1 May, 1825. His parents removed to Newark, N. J., where he early learned drawing and the rudiments of oil painting. He has from his youth been subject to epilepsy, which has interfered materially with the consecutive pursuit of his art. When sixteen years old he went to New York to study engraving, but ill health obliged him to return home, where he continued to sketch and paint. When twenty years of age he passed a month in the studio of Regis Gignoux in New York city, which is all the regular instruction he ever had. He then began landscape painting in New York City, made two visits to Europe, and lived in Florence and Rome for some time. For several years after his return he made his home near Boston, where some of his best pictures were painted. In 1862 he went to reside at Eagleswood, near Perth Amboy, N. J., and a few years later removed to New York city. He was chosen a National academician in 1868. From 1871 to 1875 he again resided in Italy. The art life of Inness is marked by two distinct styles, the first indicating careful finish and conscientious regard for details. The second style, formed with the expanding grasp of the principles of art, shows a richer appreciation of the truths of nature, is broad and vigorous, paying higher regard to masses than to details. The quality of his paintings is very uneven, as he is sometimes careless, and often mars a good work by eccentric and experimental devices. Yet no painter has represented the aspects of nature in the American climate with deeper feeling, a finer sentiment of light and color, or a better command of technical resources. He has been more influenced by the French school of landscape painting than any other American artist, yet his style is distinct and original. He is a follower of Swedenborg, and many of his paintings have a spiritual or allegorical significance.

George Inness arrived at Niagara Falls in 1881 without his painting materials but was so enthused at painting the sight that he rushed to Buffalo and got materials from an old friend. Between 1881 and 1893 he painted seven oils and one watercolor of the Falls. His favorite view of the American Falls seen from Canada he painted three times. George Inness (1825-1894) was not formally trained as an artist but made frequent visits to Europe, which influenced the style of his work. He is best known for his later works, landscapes of deliberately unpicturesque subjects that he depicted with religious sentiment.
The Gleaners exemplifies this later style, depicting a mystical atmospheric landscape that expresses the spiritual in nature.

George Inness November Montclair, 1893 Oil on canvas, 30 x 45 in. Gift of Dr. Joseph Riggio In contrast with Inness's Delaware Valley , this work painted more than thirty years later exemplifies the impact of the artist's spiritual beliefs on his later paintings. The descriptive nature of the Hudson River and Barbizon schools is gone, as is the tight brushwork of earlier works. Yet Inness retained two aspects of those schools throughout his career that are evident herea belief in both the primacy of landscape and nature's containment of moral truths. Of greatest impact on Inness's spiritual interests were the philosophies of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772). Inness became interested in the writings of the Swedish scientist and theologian through his friendship with American artist William Page (1811-1885), which began in 1863 in New Jersey. Swedenborg's interest in the connection of the spiritual and material worlds appealed to Inness, who wished to merge his interest in the supernatural with the sensate world to which he was naturally attuned as an artist. Inness was particularly intrigued by Swedenborg's Doctrine of Correspondences , which entailed the belief that, although the spiritual and temporal worlds were fundamentally different, they resembled one another in appearances. All created things, Swedenborg believed, had a corresponding spiritual reality. Inness embraced this theory, and his works after 1880 became more broadly painted and ambiguous in line and form in order to evoke the otherworldliness of objects represented. This stylistic attempt at unifying the material and immaterial peaked during the last years of his life, from about 1890 until his death in 1894.

Since the beginning of Inness's artistic maturity, the appearance, inspiration, and expressive effect of his paintings was most frequently described as poetic. And as, over time, the style of his paintings became increasingly more suggestive, as their form became broader and their resemblance's to natural appearance less and less direct, their poetic content seemed to grow in direct proportion, reaching its highest and purest state in paintings of the last few years of his life. Painted the year before Inness's death, Hazy Morning, Montclair, New Jersey is one of those late poetic paintings.
The allusiveness of its style, with all solid form blurred, corroded, and reduced to a pervasive vaporous substance more metaphysical than physical in nature-"a subtle essence which exists in all things of the material world" that constitutes "an atmosphere about the bald detail of facts,"-could be regarded as a logical development and climax of Inness's lifelong belief in the value of spiritual meaning, emotional expression, and suggestion: "You must suggest to me reality-you can never show me reality." Inness, however, disclaimed poetic vagueness unequivocally: "Poetry is the vision of reality ... [not some] gaseous representation.... What is often called poetry is a mere jingle of rhyme-intellectual dish-water. The poetic quality is not obtained by eschewing any truths of fact or of Nature which can be included in a harmony or real representation." To Inness the poetic representation of reality consisted in the same facts of nature as reality itself: color, distance, air, space, and contrasts of light and dark.

26-1/2 x 56-7/8 in. On his third trip to Europe, in the 1870s, Inness visited Italy for the first time. He painted primarily in Rome and its environs, finding many of his subjects among the scenic lakes and deep valleys of the Alban Hills and the hilltop towns. The rosy beige, tan, and white buildings of the town of Ariccia crown a ridge that stretches across the middle distance of this panoramic painting. The geometry of the town is balanced by three horizontal elements: the long bridge in the foreground, the horizon, and the strata of thin clouds. Inness captures the characteristic light at the end of the day, a time of stillness and tender melancholy to which he returned in his later work.

Inness, George Pronunciation Key Inness, George , American landscape painter, b. Newburgh, N.Y. His father intended Inness to be a grocer, but he showed artistic talent at an early age and was apprenticed to an engraver. In 1845 he opened a studio in New York City, devoting himself to painting, and two years later with a friend's aid was able to go to Rome. He made a subsequent visit to Rome in 1851, and in 1854 he and his wife went to Paris. On their return they settled in Medfield, Mass. There Inness painted many of his best-known canvases. In later life he enjoyed a high reputation, maintaining studios in New York City and in Montclair, N.J., where most of his last 20 years were spent. The early work of Inness is in the manner of the Hudson River school . His panoramic Peace and Plenty (Metropolitan Mus.) is characteristic of this period. But in a short time he discovered his own personal style, which became simplified, freer, more intimate, and richer in color. In the landscapes of the 1880s and 90s, edges frequently dissolve into the air, merging in a painterly haze. In these later works his subjects, covering a wide range of light effects, became a vehicle for the expression of a romantic mood. Inness was a Swedenborgian and consistently sought the mystical in nature. Among his principal works are
