This was Hunt's first major painting made during his first stay in the Holy Land. He conceived the idea for the picture while studying the Talmud for information on Jewish ritual for his painting of The Finding of the Savior in the Temple (Sudley House). Hunt's researches disclosed that on the Festival of the Day of Atonement, a goat was ejected from the temple with a scarlet piece of woolen cloth on its head. Hunt sold the picture for 450 guineas. Another smaller version with a black goat and a rainbow symbolising hope and forgiveness of sins, is in the City of Manchester Art Galleries.

His father was a warehouse manager in Cheapside, London, who ran an evangelical home where the young Holman Hunt spent considerable time reading the Bible. Holman Hunt left school early and went to work as a clerk at the age of 12. But office work bored him, he dreamed instead of being an artist, although he lacked the natural talent to be one. What he did have in abundance, however, were imagination and vision - rare qualities at a time when society was thrusting forward with post-Industrial Revolution fervor. "Eventually he persuaded his reluctant parents to allow him to attend the R.A. Schools where he could pursue his ambition to be a painter. There he was soon completely disillusioned by contemporary British art, in which he could find nothing to emulate or admire. However he read John Ruskin's second volume of Modern Painters and was hugely impressed by his argument that artists should return to the style of late medieval and early Renaissance painters, particularly Venetian, in their style of art. This appealed to the young Holman Hunt, who had spiritual leanings, especially the idea of bringing symbolic realism into modern art, so that the viewer could read with the help of metaphors more than the story apparently tells.

William Holman Hunt (1827-1910)
Hunt was born in London and entered the schools of the Royal Academy in 1844, where he met John Everett Millais, his life-long friend. In 1848-9, Hunt and Millais, together with D. G. Rossetti and several other painters, formed the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood; as a group these artists turned from the Royal Academy and its styles of painting and pledged themselves instead to paint accurately and faithfully from nature in precise detail. In dedication to these principles Hunt visited the Holy Land three timesin 1854, 1869 and 1873to study and capture the correct historical and natural backgrounds and lighting for his religious paintings. His best-known painting in this genre is The Light of the World (1853), which now hangs in Keble College, Oxford (the original) and in St. Paul's Cathedral (a larger copy). Like all his paintings, the details are meticulously rendered, the craftsmanship superb, and the canvas filled with allusion and symbolic implications. Hunt did several paintings on scenes from Shakespeare, and he felt an affinity for the playwright, who, he says in his memoirs, impressed him with his ability to speak to people of all classes, the rich and the poor, the educated and the manual laborer:

William Holman Hunt (1827-1910) was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood . After eventually entering the Royal Academy art schools, after having initially been rejected, Hunt rebelled against the influence of its founder Sir Joshua Reynolds . He formed the Pre-Raphaelite movement in 1848, after having met with the poet and artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti . Along with John Everett Millais they sought to revitalise art by emphasising the detailed observation of the natural world in a spirit of quasi-religious devotion to truth. This religious approach was influenced by the spiritual qualities of Medieval art, in opposition to the alleged rationalism of the Renaissance embodied by Raphael Hunt's works were not initially successful, but he became famous with his religious paintings, notably "The Light of the World", which toured Britain and the United States. After travelling to the Holy Land in search of accurate topographical and ethnographical material for further religious works, Hunt painted "The Scapegoat", "The Finding of the Saviour in the Temple" and "The Shadow of Death", along with many landscapes of the region. All these paintings were notable for their great attention to detail, their hard vivid colour and their elaborate symbolism. These features were influenced by the writings of

A clerk for several years, he left the world of trade to study at the British Museum and the National Gallery. In 1844 he entered the Royal Academy. Here he joined with Millais and Rossetti to develop the Pre-Raphaelite theories of art and, in 1848, to found the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His first canvas to interpret these themes was Rienzi , exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1849. In 1854 Hunt went to the Holy Land to portray scenes from the life of Christ, aiming to achieve total historical and archaelogical truth. He returned to Palestine in 1869 and again in 1873. Throughout his life Hunt remained dedicated to Pre-Raphaelite concepts, as exemplified in such works as The Light of the World The Scapegoat and The Shadow of Death Hunt died in Kensington, London on 7 September 1910.

William Holman Hunt's "Oriental Mania" and His Uffizi Self-portrait
George P. Landow , Professor of English and Art, Brown University
[This essay originally appeared in The Art Bulletin, . In fact, the painting seems to have been virtually unknown until its inclusion in the 1971 Pitti Palace exhibition "Firenze e l'lnghilterra, " despite the fact that a copy of it also hands in Hunt's London club, The Athenaeum. Although the catalogue of the exhibition reproduces the Self-portrait , it contains little information about it, and the relevant catalogue entry confines itself to general remarks about Hunt and the Pre-Raphaelite movement. This little-studied work would deserve our attention if only because it is the finest self-portrait painted by an original member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood . But the Uffizi Self-portrait also adds to our knowledge of Hunt at mid-career and has the additional importance of being the pictorial means by which the artist chose to sum up his life and art.
