Edward Hopper
By Brett Ungles (For more on Edward Hopper, see my "Room In New York" page.) A successful work of art speaks to its audience and offers something to which the viewer can relate, thus, a successful artist is one who possesses the ability to create such works. The artist's main role in society should be to portray something to which any viewer can personally and emotionally relate. Edward Hopper (1882-1967) was gifted with the ability to produce such works of art whose messages are just as compelling today as they were in the first half of the twentieth century. Viewers of any age or social class can relate to the messages and emotions which became recurrent themes in Hopper's works. This relationship draws the viewers into the work as they recall their own experiences with the feelings, such as loneliness and isolation, that sur face as recurrent themes in his works. This incredible talent to masterfully use the formal elements of line, shape, rhythm, and unity to connect with viewers on an emotional level makes Edward Hopper the standard by which all other artists should be judged Hopper's own judgment by his peers was a major factor in shaping both the personal and the artistic aspects of his life. Throughout his adolescence, he was often mocked by his classmates because of his tall, skinny frame, reaching over six feet tall by age 12. The awkward adolescent withdrew from society and began to focus on refining his artistic talent. During this time of seclusion, he developed his expressive form of art and soon began to speak more with art than he did with words (Strand 29). Even though he painted the American scene, he insisted that he was only trying to paint himself (WebMuseum: Hopper, Edward). In fact, it is the loneliness and isolation of his adolescence that emerged to become the common threads shared among many of his subj ects, both alive and inanimate.

Image Analysis of Edward Hopper's
Room in New York
By Brett Ungles (For more on Edward Hopper, see my "Edward Hopper" page.) Edward Hopper presents a snapshot of American life in his 1932 oil painting, Room in New York . The painting depicts a man and a woman in a somewhat small, modestly decorated room. The man is diligently reading a newspaper while the woman casually plays a few notes on a piano. The casual nature of the evening's activities suggests that the couple is married. The man is dressed in a black vest, a black tie, black pants, and a long-sleeved white shirt. The woman is wearing a long, simple, but elegant red dress with her hair pulled back in a ponytail. The image provides the viewer with insight into the nature of the couple's evening, their relationship and, to an extent, the nature of relationships as a whole. Hopper portrays the couple as loving, but not necessarily in love. He relies mainly on the viewpoint of the observer, the positioning and body language of his subjects, and his use of color to present his opinion of this and other couples' relationships in society. The couple is positioned as if the viewer is looking through a large window of the room. On the left and bottom edges of the painting, Hopper shows some detail of the building itself. The right side has a decorative column and four bricks that extend a couple of feet from the plane of the window. The ledge extends across the painting going from the left side under the column, under the window, to the right edge of the painting. The building is painted in black and shades of dark gray to set the scene at night and show the darkness of the world outside. The details of the building are visible only because they are highlighted by light coming from a source above the couple inside the room. By setting the scene at night, Hopper produces a more solemn, peaceful image of the couple. Because the couple is seen through the window, they seem to be unaffected by the presence of the observer, giving the viewer a more natural depiction of their relationship.

S hoeshine Cliffs, Wy. (Fig. 1) is one of three watercolors that Edward Hopper painted during an automobile trip to the West Coast in 1941 He and his wife, the painter Josephine Nivison Hopper, spent eight nights in Shoshone Valley, Wyoming. There, on July 9 Hopper began this picture at the base of the Holy City rock formations. The dramatic red sandstone rocks prompted him to work outdoors, near the river at the bottom of the escarpment, rather than to paint in his parked car as was his Custom. His progress on what was an atypical subject for him was disturbed by rainy weather. Three days passed before he could return to the site. Finally, on July 15 Hopper was able to finish his watercolor and he and his wife headed back to the East Coast. In addition to this drive to the West Coast in 1941 Hopper had traveled in the Midwest as an exhibition juror. Such trips prompted him to turn from his usual locations in New York City and New England to focus on the look of other regions. Fiction set in regional America also aroused his imagination. When an interviewer asked what he thought of the work of Theodore Dreiser or Sherwood Anderson, he had replied, "They're a little too Midwestern for me." On another occasion, although he called Sinclair Lewis "a fathead," he admitted that Dreiser was "all right," and he expressed unusual enthusiasm for Anderson, pronouncing him "a good writer."

    Edward Hopper
House by the Railroad , a classic work that signified his attaining artistic maturity. The work is the first of a series of stark urban and rural scenes based on sharp lines and large shapes, played on by unusual lighting to capture the lonely mood of his subjects. His subject matter was derived from the very common feature of American life, including gas stations, motels, the railroad, or an empty street.
Perhaps the most famous of these is Nighthawks (1942), showing the lonely customers frequenting an all-night diner downtown. The diner's harsh electric lights set it off from the more gentle night outside. The diners, seated at stools around the counter, are similarly isolated from one another, leaving the viewer to wonder what sad lives could have led them to the diner at this time of night. Hopper's rural New England scenes such as Gas (1940) are no less wistful. In terms of his subject matter, he can be compared to his contemporary, Norman Rockwell. But while Rockwell exalted in the rich imagery of small-town America, Hopper seems to find in it that same sense of forlorn solitude that permeates his portrayal of city life. Here too, Hopper's work exploits vast empty spaces, represented by a lonely gas station astride an empty country road and the sharp contrast between the natural light of the sky, moderated by the lush forest, and glaring artificial light coming from inside the gas station. Hopper died in New York City in 1967. His wife, who died a year later, bequeathed his work to the Whitney Museum of Art. Other important paintings by Hopper can be found at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago. [
