Hopper, Edward Hopper, Edward, , American painter and engraver, b. Nyack, N.Y., studied in New York City with Robert Henri. Hopper lived in France for a year but was little influenced by the artistic currents there. His early paintings had slight success; he gained a reputation, however, through his etchings, which remain popular. In 1920 the first one-man show of his paintings was held; in 1933 a retrospective exhibition of his works took place at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City. He excelled in creating realistic pictures of clear-cut, sunlit streets and houses, often without figures. In his paintings there is a frequent atmosphere of loneliness, an almost menacing starkness, and a clear sense of time of day or night. His work in oil and watercolor is slowly and carefully painted, with light and shade used for pattern rather than for modeling. Hopper is represented in many leading American museums. Early Sunday Morning (1930; Whitney Museum, New York City) is a characteristic oil.

Edward Hopper born: Nyack, New York; 22 July 1882
died: New York City; 15 May 1967 U.S. painter whose realistic depictions of everyday urban scenes shock the viewer into
recognition of the strangeness of familiar surroundings. He strongly influenced the Pop art and New Realist painters of the 1960s and 1970s. Hopper's mature style was already formed by the mid-1920s. His subsequent development
showed a constant refinement of his vision. Such late paintings as "Second-Story Sunlight"
(1960; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City) are distinguished by extremely subtle spatial relationships and an even greater mastery of light than is seen in his work of the 1920s.

One of the foremost American realists , and the most famous exponent of New Realism in the 20th century, he is often associated with American Scene painting. His views of New York City and New England in the 1930s and 1940s, painted in rich colours with stark light, convey a brooding sense of emptiness and solitude. Through his use of light, planes of colour, and large angles, verticals, and horizontals, Hopper was able to capture both a moment in time and the inner world of individuals occupying a particular space, as in Nighthawks Ashcan School , was an important influence. Indeed, the more the viewer tries to penetrate the depths of a Hopper painting, the more impenetrable it becomes. What holds the viewer is that the artist's vision seems under control and yet, on closer inspection, the viewer realizes that the visible surface is a tissue of improbabilities and unreadable shifts in space. Hopper's view that nature and the contemporary world were incoherent contributed to his artistic vision.
  • Indications of the structure of the house were brushed in with a minimum of black paint in a turpentine mixture. The columns and windows on the right shadowed side of the house clearly show this.
  • The house was then painted from dark to light: Hopper gradually added more oil paint to the turpentine and built up the forms with free, often diagonal brushwork.
  • The side of the house in bright sunlight was executed less freely with transparent darks and opaque lights. Lines of blue were added after the opaque white to define forms.

Hopper is considered the pre-eminent painter of modern America and many of his works have become iconic images of the twentieth century. By staging scenes and motifs from everyday life, illuminated by strong sunlight or artificial light, Hopper transcended the American experience to address universal concerns and his paintings are profound statements about the human condition. His work places him amongst the ranks of the most significant international painters of the twentieth century, and has inspired generations of film makers, writers and artists including Alfred Hitchcock, Francis Ford Coppola, Todd Haynes, William Boyd, Norman Mailer, John Updike, Ed Ruscha, Peter Doig and Luc Tuymans. Edward Hopper American, 1882-1967 Nighthawks, Oil on canvas 84.1 x 152.4 cm Friends of American Art Collection, 1942.51 View enlargement Although trained as an illustrator, Edward Hopper spent five years studying painting under Robert Henri, a member of the Ashcan School Nighthawks was inspired by "a restaurant on New York ’s Greenwich Avenue where two streets meet." The diner has since been destroyed, but the image, with its carefully constructed composition and lack of narrative, has a timeless quality that transcends any particular location. The painting reveals three customers lost in their own private thoughts. The anonymous and uncommunicative night owls seem as remote from the viewer as they are from one another. Although Hopper denied that he purposely infused any of his paintings with symbols of isolation and emptiness, he acknowledged of Nighthawks that, "unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city."
