Genre prints from Harper's Weekly
Harper’s Weekly Ballou’s Pictorial Every Saturday , etc., were weekly newspapers filled with woodblock illustrations by many of the leading American artists of the last half of the nineteenth century. Of particular historical importance are the contemporaneous views of Civil War battles, soldiers and scenes. These pictures, often drawn on the spot by the magazine’s numerous artists, provided the most widely circulated eye-witness illustrations of the war, and thus were the most common means by which Americans could view the events and persons of this tragic conflict. Also of great interest are the genre scenes drawn by leading American artists, many of whom got their first chance to succeed through these publications. Amongst the very best artists in both of these areas was Winslow Homer. His genre scenes and his Civil War illustrations are both in great demand. They are now beginning to be appreciated as not only decorative and affordable, but as having their own historic value for the collector. The following prints are all wood engravings after Winslow Homer. They are uncolored and on full sheets as originally issued, unless noted. All are in very good condition, except as noted. Numbers preceded by “B” refer to the prints listed in the book

The Boat Builders
Winslow Homer - 1873
Dialogue by Mark:
Meanwhile, back on the shore, let's check out an artist who was well known for his pictures of the sea, the American painter Winslow Homer.
Homer lived in the part of the United States known as New England. He was one of the first artists to make and sell watercolor paintings as well as traditional oil paintings. And he loved to paint the ocean. This picture is called "The Boat Builders." These two kids probably did build their toy boats themselves. This was the time of sailing ships. You can see ships out in the ocean behind the boys...one ship pretty close to shore and another far away on the horizon. The boys have made sails for their boats too. Maybe they're getting their boats ready for sailing in the little tidepool right behind them on the rocky beach. I bet they'll find some jellyfish washed into the pool, waiting for high tide to carry them out to sea again.

WINSLOW HOMER 1836-1910
Snap the Whip, 1872 Oil on canvas, 22 x 36" (55.88 x cm.) Signed, lower right Museum purchase, 919-0-108 Because it seems the quintessential embodiment of the American spirit, this painting is one of Winslow Homer's most discussed and reproduced works. As one of our greatest artists, Homer and his life are justifiably the subject of a voluminous body of scholarly writing. Snap the Whip, dating from just about the mid-point of his life, tells us a good deal about some of the critical transitions in his artistic development at that time. However familiar and appealing such a work seems to us, it delights and informs with each new look we bring to it. One of the reasons it is so well known is that it exists in several versions: a large figure drawing for the central group of boys (1872, Cooper-Hewitt Museum, New York), a finished oil study (1872, Metropolitan Museum of Art), the final Butler Institute canvas, and another figure drawing believed to be a cartoon (Fig. 1), for the nearly exact replica executed as a wood engraving and published in Harper's Weekly

Winslow Homer
One of the most well known artists to come out of the Civil War, Homer was born in Boston, Mass. February 24, 1836. At 19, Homer was apprenticed to a local lithographer, and his drawings were soon appearing in the illustrated periodicals of the day.
In 1859 he moved to New York City to study at the National Academy of Design, supporting himself by contributing drawings to Harper's Weekly. In 1861 Harpers sent him to Washington to sketch Abraham Lincoln's inauguration.
Homers initial war drawings for Harpers depicted Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan's army on the banks of the Potomac in Oct. 1861. The following year he was dispatched as a "special artist" to cover the Peninsula Campaign. Though he did not serve again as a special, he made frequent excursions to the battlefronts and filled his sketchbook with drawings, from which he worked in his studio in New York.
Double-page woodcuts of his illustrations depicting battles and camp scenes appeared in Harpers throughout the war years. Homer was not specifically a combat artist; his work was concerned with the intimate moments of camp life and human interest rather than with the panorama of clashing armies. Supplied with his firsthand observations made at the front, he translated these drawings into canvases such as

The sport took him to many locales that are now associated with his work, including Florida, the Canadian Province of Quebec, and the Adirondacks in northern New York State. Winslow Homer Illustrations 1857-1888

27 April through 9 June 2002 Winslow Homer's name is a household word in American art, beloved painter of sea, people, 19th-century genre, and American life. Understanding his involvement with illustration early in his career is a particular perspective upon the artist's contribution to a medium that not only is aesthetic in its inspiration and application but is journalistic in its initial intention. Homer was an observer of current events for such magazines and journals as Harper's Weekly and Ballou's Pictorial Drawing Room Companion . Though well known in the study of his life and work, the consideration of these images separated from their original context places then in the general arena with his paintings, which were created solely for aesthetic purposes. The exhibition intends to explore this aspect of Homer's oeuvre and allow an assessment of the opportunity the illustrated image was given for informational as well as artistic presentation.
Homer's exposure to the world of print media began with his apprenticeship in Bufford's lithography shop in Boston, where he was confronted with the role of the artist in the new application of the inclusion of pictures with printed stories. Prior to this time, articles were basically composed of verbiage, however, the 1850's dailies, weeklies, and other publications began to use pictorial descriptions that corresponded to the written word. With printing processes turning artists' drawings into wood engravings that cleverly replicated the drawn line, the possibilities were endless for artists to flourish in this medium. Thus was born the illustrator/journalist - at least for a limited time, since the process ceased with the advent of the photographic image that would engender its own revolution in the late 1870's.

Understanding Paintings
Associated Press released a story several weeks past ago that will forever influence value placed on traditional American paintings. According to the NY Times, Microsoft Chairman, Bill Gates paid more than $30 million to John Spoor Broome, a business man from Southern California, for "Lost on the Grand Banks," the last major seascape by Winslow Homer still in private hands. Sailing the Catboat - 1875 The private sale price easily broke the previous record for American Art of $11.1 million paid two years ago for John Singer's "Cashmere." Broome purchased the picture from his grandmother back in the 1940's. Measuring 32" by 50" Homer's painting portrays two rain-hat clad fishermen peering over the side of their small rowboat at dangerous choppy seas. A critic from the "Art Review" wrote about the painting in 1886: "Winslow Homer shows in his "Lost on the Great Banks" a rude vigor and firm force that is almost a tonic in the midst of the namby-pambyism of many of his other pictures. The utter simplicity of the composition, the fidelity to local coloring, and spirited rendering of the wave tossed boat and its anxious occupants-these are elements characteristic of Mr. Homer's work, but always welcome because Mr. Homer always has something to say." Homer had much to say. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, February 24, 1836, mostly self-educated, at age 19 Homer served as an apprentice engraver with the firm of "J. H. Bufford" illustrating sheet music covers. Upon graduation he went to work for "Ballou's Pictorial," then moved on to "Harper's Weekly," to work as a Civil War correspondent from the front. Copies of magazines and other items containing Homer's prints are much sought after today and can occasionally be found for bargain prices.

The Artists' Specials Winslow Homer: An American Original
The film is set in 1874, by which time Winslow Homer (WAYNE BEST) had seen and recorded enough of the horrors of the Civil War. Leaving the battlefield and his post as illustrator for Harpers’ Weekly behind, he is at Houghton Farm to be alone, refocus and paint. Breathing in the fresh air, he sets up his easel at the nearby river. A truant boy, Gabe (RYAN DEBOER) fires his slingshot directly at Homer, sending brushes and paints floating downstream. Then a mysterious, babbling girl named Fee (TAMARA HOPE) appears out of the woods to follow the painter. The children are fascinated with Homer and his art and he has no choice but to show them his studio. Since he can’t get rid of them, Homer asks them to be his models. As they pose, Gabe and Fee become fast friends. A rift between the children leaves Homer at a loss to complete the paintings he’s started, so he does his best to bring them together. The two youngsters - together with Homer - eventually share the truth about their lives and what the war had done to their families, and to themselves. Through their ability to share their feelings, to escape the fear and shadows of the Civil War, all three of them discover that the present has more to offer than the ghosts of their past.
