The Life and Works of Winslow Homer
The Country School, 1871 by: Randy Rausch
April 25 th The Life and Works of Winslow Homer Due to its geographical and political history, the United States was heavily influenced by the styles in art and architecture already developed to a high point in the mature societies of Europe. During the 19th century, however, the country developed distinctive variations of the European models. Finally, by the middle of the 20th century, U.S. masters and schools of art were exerting a powerful worldwide influence over art and architecture. Winslow Homer contributed a large amount to the realm of American art. Born in Boston, Winslow Homer spent his childhood in then-rural Cambridge. He began his career about 1855 as an apprentice to a lithographer, for whom he produced sheet-music covers and other commercial works. After two years, at age 21, he set out to be a freelance illustrator and soon was a major contributor of drawings for wood engravings to popular magazines. In 1859 he moved to New York, where the publishers who commissioned his illustrations were located. There he also pursued his ambitions as a painter, and briefly attended life classes at the National Academy of Design. Six months after the outbreak of the Civil War, Homer was sent to the front in Virginia as an artist-correspondent for the illustrated journal, In the late 1860s and 1870s, Homer traveled during the summers to the Adirondacks, as well as New York State, and to seaside resorts in New Jersey and Massachusetts. As an avid sport-fisherman and hunter, his primary subject matter then was idyllic, as Homer chronicled the lives of rural Americans that be seen in such paintings as

Once created, the wave or the arc of a wave begins its journey through the sea. Countless vibrations precede it, countless vibrations follow after. It approaches the continent, swings into the coast line, courses ashore, breaks, dissolves, is gone. The innermost water it last inhabited flow back in marbly foam to become a body to another beat, and to be again flung down. So it goes night and day , and will go till the secret heart of earth strikes out its last slow beat and the last wave dissolves upon the last forsaken shore. He was just beginning a lifelong career that would earn him fame and affluence for his paintings of American life and nature, especially of the sea. Already he was winning admirers through the pages of with his sensitive wood engravings that portrayed the life of soldiers in camp and conveyed the longing of loved ones left behind.
Homer was mostly a self-taught artist whose talent was readily apparent from the start of his career. It was matched by his determination to develop his skills independently and to his own liking. As evidence of this, Homer declined to join the staff of , preferring instead to contribute to the paper as a freelance artist. For Homer, the Civil War provided an unusual opportunity to explore and practice the nuances of his profession, while rendering a service to those who valued his art as a documentary of the war.
Between 1861 and 1865, Homer made several trips to the war front in Virginia. Armed with a letter from Fletcher Harper, the editor of

Winslow Homer Biography
(February 24, 1836 - September 29, 1910) was an American painter. "The sun will not rise or set without my notice, and thanks," Winslow Homer, 1895 Perhaps it was this notice of and gratitude for the beauty of the cycles of nature that helped make Winslow Homer one of America's most treasured artists. The United States has produced its own breed of painters true to the vision and character of the nation. In the nineteenth century, one of its greatest was Winslow Homer. Classified as an American naturalist painter, Winslow was a self-taught artist who became most famous for his views of the American landscape and most notably his seascapes off of the Maine coastline where he lived during the latter part of his life. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Homer started an apprenticeship to the Boston commercial lithographer at the age of 19. By 1857 he had started an independent career, employed as a free-lance illustrator for such magazines as

Winslow Homer Civil War Art:
The Undisputed 1861 Collection When Winslow Homer began his career with Harper's Weekly, he had no formal art training and was not, at the time, respected as a great artist. Much of his early work at Harper's Weekly was to make sketches from Mathew Brady photographs. These sketches were then carved onto large wooden blocks, and used to "stamp" the images onto the pages of Harper's Weekly. These original Harper's Weekly pages have now become treasured pieces of art. During the year 1861 we can begin to see a transition in Homer's work in Harper's Weekly. As the year progresses he is used less to transcribe Brady photographs, and is used more to capture important events, such as the Abraham Lincoln Inauguration. Below, for your consideration, we present the entire body of Winslow Homer work for the year 1861. We include images with his signature, or images that are attributed in the text to Winslow Homer, or attributed to Harper's "Special Artist", which was a designator used by Harpers for Winslow Homer. There are a number of other illustrations which likely are by Winslow Homer, but can not be verified for certain. In this collection, we present only those images which can be attributed to Homer without question or controversy.

(left: The Army of the Potomac - A Sharp-Shooter of Picket Duty , 1862, from Harper's Weekly , November 15 , 1862, wood engraving) Homer's greatest output occurred during the Civil War when he covered the action on the front lines and the every day tedium of camp life. These sketches were faithfully engraved in New York at Harpers Weekly . The Gloucester images were produced in 1873 and 1874, and they depict the quiet and peaceful years of the residences of New England and particularly Massachusetts.
