41. A Sea Change: The Life And Art Of Winslow Homer
Short article from Smithsonian Magazine.
http://smithsonianmag.si.edu/smithsonian/issues95/oct95/homer.html
document.write(''); Winslow Homer, the quintessential American artist By the time he was in his mid-40s, a decade after the end of the Civil War, Winslow Homer was already successful as a painter. His reputation had been firmly established with masterpieces such as Prisoners from the Front (1866), hailed by the New York Evening Post as "a complete summation of the most vital facts of the Civil War," and The Carnival (1877), one of a series in which he documented the lives of the newly freed blacks in Petersburg, Virginia. Yet, from the late 1870s on, Winslow Homer seemed to change in a fundamental way. Some scholars speculate that there was a failed romance that caused his withdrawal from society. In any case, this great painter of the American scene did not lose the edge when it came to the probity and drama of his art. Eventually moving to the coast of Maine, he limited his socializing to occasional trips to town to pick up his mail. In works such as Fox Hunt (1893) and Right and Left (1909), Homer dealt with profound issues of existence, while in his paintings of the pounding surf of the Maine coast he brought nature to center stage. Now, these works and other masterpieces by Winslow Homer are included in a major retrospective that opens at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., on October 15, where it will continue until January 28, 1996. It will then travel to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (February 21 to May 26, 1996), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (June 20 to September 22, 1996).

The United States has produced its own breed of painters true to the vision and character of the nation. In the nineteenth century, one of its greatest was Winslow Homer. Classified as an American naturalist painter, Winslow was a self-taught artist who became most famous for his views of the American landscape and most noteably his seascapes off of the Maine coastline where he lived during the latter part of his life. Homer was born on February 24, 1836. As a young man, he received his start as an illustrator of magazines. He became a regular contributor of engraving drawings to Harper's Weekly, one of the nation's most popular magazines of the time. After spending a year in Paris in 1856, he returned to the U.S. with a better understanding of the of light in impressionism although he was not really influenced by French art. In the early 1860's, Homer made several trips to the front lines of some Civil War battles in Virginia. It was from sketches he made there that he created his first important oil work, Prisoners from the Front (1866, Metropolitan Museum, New York City). In 1873, after working in oils for almost twenty years, Homer began also to paint using watercolors. For the rest of his life, this became as important to him as his use of oil and he created many of each. In the mid point of his career, his subjects usually depicted the rural farm scenes of Northeast America, children at play, and fashionable resort views featuring mostly well dressed women.

L ike so many American artists, Winslow Homer had strong New England roots. He was born in Boston, and at the age of six moved with his family to Cambridge. In 1858 his family moved to Belmont, and the following year Homer himself left for New York where he had his studio until 1880. However, he returned frequently to see his family and to exhibit his work, and he spent several summers (including those of 1873 and 1880) in Gloucester. In 1883 he moved back to New England, settling for his last three decades in Prout's Neck, Maine. H omer began as an illustrator, making many designs for wood-engravings published in

Homer, Winslow Homer, Winslow, , American landscape, marine, and genre painter. Homer was born in Boston, where he later worked as a lithographer and illustrator. In 1861 he was sent to the battlefront as correspondent for Harper's Weekly, his work winning international acclaim. Many of his postwar studies of everyday life, such as Crack the Whip (Metropolitan Mus.), date from this period, during which he was a popular magazine illustrator. In 1876, Homer abandoned illustration to devote himself to painting. He found his inspiration in the American scene and, eventually, in the sea, which he painted at Prouts Neck, Maine, in the summer and in Florida or the Bahamas in the winter. His oils and watercolors alike are characterized by their directness, realism, objectivity, and splendid color. But it is above all as a watercolorist that Homer excelled. After 1884 he lived the life of a recluse. His powerful and dramatic interpretations of the sea in watercolor have never been surpassed and hold a unique place in American art. They are in leading museums throughout the United States. Characteristic watercolors are Breaking Storm and Maine Coast (both: Art Inst. of Chicago) and

WINSLOW HOMER
HOMER, WINSLOW (1836-1910), American painter, was born in Boston, U.S.A., on the 24th of February 1836. At the age of nineteen he was apprenticed to a lithographer. Two years later he opened a studio in Boston, and devoted much of his time to making drawings for wood-engravers. In 1859 he removed to New York, where he studied in the night-school of the National Academy of Design. During the American Civil War he was with the troops at the front, and contributed sketches to Harpers lEech/v. The war also furnished him with the subjects for the first two pictures which he exhibited (1863), one of which was ~ Home, Sweet Home. His Prisoners from the Front perhaps his most generally popular picture-was exhibited in New York in 1565. and also in Paris in 1867, where he was spending the year in study. Among his other paintings in oil are Snap the Whip (which was exhibited at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876, and, in company with The Country Schoolroom, at the Iaris Salon the following year), Eating Water-melon, The Cotton Pickers, Visit from the (Md Mistress. Sunday Morning, The Life-Line and The Coming of the Gale. His genius, however, has perhaps shown better in his works in water-color, among which are his marine studies painted at Gloucestei, Mass., and his Inside the Bar, The tone from the Cliffs (pictures of English f~isherwomen)

Homer, Winslow (1836-1910)
page: One of the most prolific and important American painters and printmakers of the second half of the nineteenth century, Winslow Homer created a distinctly American, modern classical style. For this and other reasons, his works have often been compared to the achievements of such prominent nineteenth-century American authors as Henry Thoreau, Herman Melville, and Walt Whitman. Sponsor Message.
Homer dealt with many of the same themes that these writers did, including the heroism displayed by ordinary individuals, when confronted by seemingly insuperable difficulties; the camaraderie and friendships enjoyed by soldiers and working men; and the isolation of the individual in the face of the "Other." Education and Early Career Born in Boston on February 24, 1836, Homer was initially trained as an artist by his mother, Henrietta Benson Winslow, who successfully exhibited watercolors of flowers and other still life subjects throughout her adult life. Between 1855 and 1857, he was apprenticed to John H. Bufford, a nationally prominent commercial artist, based in Boston; with this training, he began to do free-lance work for

Homer, Winslow Sources American painter. Beginning as an illustrator, he was special correspondent during the Civil War for Harper's Weekly . Despite living in Boston, which had no art schools, few exhibitions and only a small undistinguished community of artists, Homer's artistic inclinations were nourished by his family, who arranged his apprenticeship with a commercial lithographer, John H. Bufford. Leaving Bufford's in 1857, Homer moved to New York and began contributing illustrations to Harper's Weekly and other periodicals. About 1880, he gave up illustration for painting.
