Her catalogue is a landmark in Homer studies. It puts Homer in his true relationship to illustration, to other American art and to the European and English examples he followed, from Ruskin to Millet ; its vivacity of argument matches that of the paintings. Cooper has brought together some two hundred watercolors-almost a third of Homer's known output. It is a wholly delectable show, and it makes clear why watercolor, in its special freshness and immediacy, gave Homer access to moments of vision he did not have in the weightier, slower diction of oils. "You will see, in the future I will live by my watercolors," Homer once remarked, and he was almost right. He came to the medium late: he was thirty-seven and a mature artist. A distinct air of the Salon, of the desire for a "major" utterance that leads to an overworked surface, clings to some of the early watercolors-in particular, the paintings of

Winslow Homer was one of the finest and most influential American painters of the 19th century. Unlike his near-contemporaries James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent, Homer executed the majority of his works in the United States and largely eschewed such revolutionary European artistic movements as impressionism in favor of a highly individual style rooted in traditional American realism.
An apprenticeship (1855-57) to a lithographer and an early career (1857-75) as a magazine illustrator constituted virtually all Homer's artistic education. His first significant oil paintings date from a Harper's Weekly assignment as a pictorial reporter of the Civil War. During the war Homer made several trips to the Virginia front, where he painted his first important oil, Prisoners from the Front (1866, Metropolitan Museum, New York City), a work notable for its cool objectivity and vigorous realism. In 1873 he began working in watercolor, a medium that became as important to him as oil. His subject matter of the 1870s was primarily rural or idyllic—scenes of farm life; children at play; and resort scenes peopled with fashionable women; one of the best known of the latter is Long Branch, New Jersey

HOMER Winslow , artist, born in Boston, Mass., 24 Feb., 1836. In 1854 he was placed by his father with a lithographer to learn the business, and remained two years, producing among other works a design that embraced the portraits of the entire senate of Massachusetts. He then engaged in drawing on the block for wood-engravers, and, his work attracting favorable comment, he was invited to remove to New York by a publishing house, for whom he made many drawings. In 1860-'1 he studied in the night-school of the Academy of design, and had a month's instruction in landscape-painting. In 1863 he exhibited for the first time, at the Academy, two pictures on war subjects "Home, Sweet Home," and "The Last Goose at Yuletown." These pictures made a strong impression on the public. In 1865 he exhibited "Prisoners at the Front." The characters in this scene are all portraits, and at the Paris salon of 1867 was one of the few American pictures that received favorable comment. He spent the year 1867 in Paris, studying without a master from life models, but received a great impulse from the paintings of John La Farge. He was elected an associate of the National academy in 1864, and an academician the following year. Mr. Homer's pictures have the merit of genuine motive and aim. He paints life as he sees it, and is rigidly faithful to his own perceptions. Since 1867 he has resided in New York. lice exhibited

Acknowledged today as one of the world's greatest watercolorists, Winslow Homer grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and was apprenticed in his teens to a lithographer in Boston. In 1855 he moved to New York City and attended the National Academy of Design. During this period he made his living as an illustrator for various magazines, chiefly Harper's Weekly , for whom he served as a pictorial correspondent during the Civil War, participating in several Union campaigns. At about this same time, Homer began painting in oils. His Prisoners from the Front , completed in 1866, and the only large-scale oil he produced based on his wartime experiences, won him immediate acclaim when it was shown at the Exposition Universelle in Paris.

    Winslow Homer-Illustrator (1857-1875)
Born in Boston in 1836 of old New England stock, Winslow Homer died at Prout's Neck, Maine, in 1910. At that time he was already being judged by many as the greatest American artist. Among the few great painters of this country to serve an apprenticeship in a lithogi-apher's shop, and then go on to become a free-lance illustrator, Winslow Homer spent seventeen years laying the foundation for a greater attainment-his paintings. Perhaps the most conspicuous influence on his work was the selection of subject matter. The majority of his pictures was dominated by people until late in his career when he turned intently to a study of the sea. Like most good illustrators, Homer's work is concerned principally with ideas rather than aesthetics. Subjects for his illustrations seem to divide into three general categories: (1) Leisure time activities revealed in the husking bee, croquet, sailing, fishing, bathing, skating, hunting, camping, sleigh riding, etc.; (2) Civil War scenes, generally devoted to the more intiinate and relaxed side of military life; (3) A miscellany of New York and Boston street scenes. Never wasteful, Homer quite often developed one pictorial idea into various salable forms. Illustrations frequently came from pencil sketches, and then, at his leisure, were transformed into watercolors and oils.

    The Herring Net
    Oil on canvas, 1885; 76.5 x 122.9 cm
Mr. and Mrs. Martin A. Ryerson Collection, 1937.1039 In 1883, Winslow Homer moved to Prout's Neck, Maine, and proceeded to create a series of images of the sea unparalleled in American art. Long inspired by the subject, Homer had spent summers visiting New England fishing villages during the 1870s and, in 1881, he made a trip to a fishing community in Tynemouth, England, that fundamentally changed his work and life. His late paintings focused almost exclusively on mankind's age-old contest with nature. Here in The Herring Net, Homer depicted the heroic efforts of fishermen at their daily work, hauling in an abundant catch of herring. In a small dory, two figures loom large against the mist on the horizon, through which the sails of the mother schooners are dimly visible. While one fisherman hauls in the netted and glistening herring, the other, a boy, unloads the catch. With teamwork so necessary for survival, both strive to steady the precarious boat as it rides the incoming swells. VIEW larger picture RETURN to American Art
