7. Henry Holiday 1839-1927
A biography of the PreRaphaelite artist and stained glass window designer henry holiday, with particular reference to his work in Cumbria (The Lake District). Photographs of several of his windows.

'Henry Holiday'
Henry Holiday was born on 17th June 1839 in London. In 1855, aged 16, he made his first journey to the Lake District. Throughout the rest of his life he was to make many more trips, often holidaying for long periods of time. In 1908 he designed his own home, Betty Fold, near Hawkshead. He often stayed at Brantwood , home of John Ruskin , who introduced him to Edward Burne-Jones . From 1872 onwards, he was a regular visitor at Muncaster Castle
Henry Holiday was a frequent visitor to the studios of Sir Edward Burne-Jones at his home in London, and Burne-Jones' influence on him can be felt in his work. At Burne-Jones' home aesthetic problems were discussed and exchanged by a group of artists, who pooled their ideas, and whose work had much in common. He died on April 15th, 1927, two years after his wife Kate (who did embroidery work for the William Morris Company Walker Art Gallery - Liverpool St Mary's Church - Rydal St James' Church - Buttermere Church windows in Cumbria

Quick links: Drew University Drew University Library About the Library The Rose Window The Rose Window, displayed over the entrance of the present library building, was designed by Henry Holiday for Drew's first library, the Cornell (1883). Below: the Cornell Library, with the Rose Window on the back wall.
The first photo was probably taken around the turn of the century; the second in the 1920s.
Photos courtesy of the Drew University Archives. The Cornell Library was razed in 1937 when the Rose Memorial Library was constructed on the site; the window was removed at that time and placed in storage for over forty years. No formal records were kept of its whereabouts. In 1978, when plans to add a Learning Center to the Rose Memorial Library were almost finished, the dismantled window was unexpectedly rediscovered in a crate in the attic of the Hall of Sciences. It was decided that the window should be restored to a place over the library's new entrance. Gordon Henderson, a stained glass craftsman, reconstructed the window with the help of his son Todd. Because there was no original copy of the design, it took six months to piece together the small stained glass parcels. Henderson's great grandfather had restored stained glass windows in the Graduate School Building named after Samuel W. Bowne, back when the University was still a seminary. "Rose" is the term used to describe a round cathedral or church stained glass window whose design emanates from the center, like the flower after which it is named. This rose window has a nine and a half foot diameter. A letter from Henry Holiday, dated April 20, 1888 (Drew University Archives), gives a fascinating explanation of its symbolism:

11. Henry Holiday (1839-1927)
Notes on the Victorian painter and designer henry holiday from Bob Speel.
http://www.speel.demon.co.uk/artists/holiday.htm
Henry Holiday (1839-1927)
The painter and designer Henry Holiday, perhaps best known today for his stained glass designs, studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1854, becoming friends with Rossetti Burne-Jones and Simeon Solomon at this time. He became chief designer at Powell and Sons, a stained glass maker, in 1863 (after Burne-Jones had left the previous year), and fulfilled more than 300 commissions, many for American clients. As a painter, he excelled in drapery, producing cold-faced figure subjects close in spirit to the work of Rossetti. He visited India in 1871, and in 1872 and much later in 1907 went to Egypt, painting a series of watercolours and illustrations on modern Indian and ancient Egyptian themes respectively. As well as stained glass, painting and illustration, he also produced some sculpture and carving, frescos, and also enamelwork. His most important painting was Dante and Beatrice ... Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. There is good stained glass by him at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery , and in various churches, e.g. Notting Hill Church in Essex. Other examples are in American churches, for example the Church of St Thomas, Washington DC, and the Memorial to General Lee in St Pauls, Richmond Va. Top of page Other artists Home
