William Hogarth Pintor e gravador inglês do século XVIII.

William Hogarth
William Hogarth is unquestionably one of the greatest English artists and a man of remarkably individual character and thought. He is the great innovator in English art. On one hand, he was the first to paint themes from Shakespeare, Milton and the theater, and the founder of a wholly original genre of moral history, which was long known as Hogarthian. On the other, he investigated the aesthetic principles of his art, which resulted in his book “ The Analysis of Beauty William Hogarth was born on 10 November, 1697. He was the 5th child of Richard Hogarth, a schoolmaster and classical scholar from the north of England who had come to London in the mid-1680s. His father’s premature death in 1718 affected Hogarth’s early life, his training and forced him to earn money.
In February 1713/14, Hogarth began his apprenticeship to a plate engraver, Ellis Gamble, who was a distant relation. By April 1720, he set up an independent business as an engraver. His first works included a number of commissions for small etched cards and bookplates, and in 1721 he produced two inventive engraved allegories. With these topical prints The South Sea Scheme and The Lottery , which aroused considerable attention, he started his black-and-white satires which made him so widely known in Britain and abroad. His first success as a painter was in the ‘conversational pieces’, in which figure informal groups of family and friends surrounded by customary things from their everyday life. He was not the inventor of the genre, and had many contemporary rivals, but his pictures are marked with his own individuality:

Hogarth, William Hogarth, William, Hudibras (1726). He studied drawing with Thornhill, whose daughter he married in 1729. Hogarth tried to earn a living with small portraits and portrait groups, but his first real success came in 1732 with a series of six morality pictures, The Harlot's Progress. He first painted, then engraved them, selling subscriptions for the prints, which had great popularity. The Rake's Progress, a similar series, appeared in 1735. The series (1745) is often considered his masterpiece. With a wealth of detail and brilliant characterization he depicts the profligate and inane existence of a fashionable young couple. Hogarth invented a sort of visual shorthand that enabled him to recall with perfect clarity whatever sight he wished to retain. He became, by this means, an enormously learned artist possessing a profound visual understanding. His Analysis of Beauty (1753) is a brilliant formal exposition of the rococo aesthetic. In such prints as

An Emblematic Print on the South Sea
English painter and engraver. He produced portraits and moralizing genre scenes, such as the story series of prints c. The Shrimp Girl (National Gallery, London). He published , a series of six engravings, in 1732. Other story series followed, including Industry and Idleness (1749), and The Four Stages of Cruelty (1751). A stern critic of phizmongering (traditional portrait painting), his book The Analysis of Beauty (1753) also attacked the uncritical appreciation of the arts, advocating the double curved line and serpentine spiral as a key to visual beauty (both traceable in the composition of his own work). His house in Hogarth Lane, Chiswick, is now a museum.

This fictional, arranged marriage between a Viscount and a rich merchant's daughter is doomed to end in tragedy. "The Visit to the Quack Doctor" (also called "The Inspection") is the third in the series. By this point, the husband has contracted a venereal disease and he and his diminutive mistress are visiting a quack doctor and female accomplice. This bold, angry assistant commands the center of the pictureshe bears the tattoo of a criminal on her breast, holds a jackknife and is clothed in a wide black dress with a red and gold fringed apron. http://33.1911encyclopedia.org/H/HO/HOGARTH_WILLIAM.htm
    WILLIAM HOGARTH
HOGARTH, WILLIAM On the 23rd of March 1729 he was married at old Paddington church to Jane Thornhill, the only daughter of Kents rival above mentioned. The match was a clandestine one, although Lady Thornhill appears to have favored it. We next hear of him in lodgings at South Lambeth, where he rendered some assistance to the then well-known Jonathan Tyers, who opened Vauxhall in 1732 with an entertainment styled a ridotto al fresco. For these gardens Hogarth painted a poor picture of Henry VIII. and Anne Boleyn, and he also permitted Hayman to make copies of the later series of the Four Times of the Day. In return, the grateful Tyers presented him with a gold pass ticket In perpeluam Benefi cii Memoriam. It was long thought that Hogarth designed this himself. Mr Warwick Wroth (Numismatic Chronicle, vol. xviii.) doubts this, although he thinks it probable that Hogarth designed some of the silver Vauxhall passes which are figured in Wilkinsons Londina illustrata. The only engravings between 1726 and 1732 which need be referred to are the Large Masquerade Ticket (1727), another satire on masquerades, and the print of Burlington Gate (1731), evoked by Popes Epistle to Lord Burlington, and defending Lord Chandos, who is therein satirized. This print gave great offence, and was, it is said, suppressed. In A Harlots Progress Hogarth had not strayed much beyond the lower walks of society, and although, in A Rakes Progress, his hero was taken from the middle classes, he can scarcely be said to have quitted those fields of observation which are common to every spectator. It is therefore more remarkable, looking to his education and antecedents, that his masterpiece, Marriage a Ia mode, should successfully depict, as the advertisement has it, a variety of modern occurrences in high life.
