Email William Hogarth, the son of Richard Hogarth, a Latin teacher, was born in Smithfield, London , in 1697. Hogarth's father opened a coffee-house in London but the venture was unsuccessful and in 1707 he was confined to Fleet Prison for debt. Hogarth was released five years later during an amnesty. When Hogarth was sixteen he was apprenticed to Ellis Gamble, a silverplate engraver. By 1720 Hogarth had own business engraving book plates and painting portraits. Around this time Hogarth met the artist, Sir James Thornhill. Impressed by his history paintings, Hogarth made regular visits to Thornhill's free art academy in Covent Garden. The two men became close friends and Hogarth eventually married Thornhill's daughter, Jane.During the 1720s Hogarth worked for the printseller, Philip Overton. Hogarth also started to produce political satires. In 1726 Hogarth published

William Hogarth Self-Portrait CFGA - William Hogarth ART MASTERPIECES - William Hogarth Art of William Hogarth The William Hogarth Archive William Hogarth, one of the greatest British artists of the 18th century, won fame principally for his moral and satirical engravings and, to a lesser extent, for his portraits and commentaries on art. Born in London on Nov. 10, 1697, Hogarth knew poverty and disgrace from an early age. His father's business failure led to the entire family's imprisonment for debt for five years. This face-to-face encounter with the sordid side of contemporary life, coupled with a Presbyterian belief that art should serve a moral purpose as well as an aesthetic one, lent Hogarth's mature work an uncommon combination of pungent realism and strong moralism. After an apprenticeship to a silver-engraver, Hogarth received more conventional art training at private academies, including the one run by Sir James Thornhill, whose daughter he was to marry in 1729. He first became known in 1726 for his illustrations for the novel Hudibras , by Samuel Butler. Hogarth began painting about 1728, producing small group scenes such as

Strolling Actresses Dressing in a Barn , William Hogarth, 1738 Hogarth and 18th-Century Print Culture commemorates the 300th anniversary of one of Britain's most influential artists. This exhibition critically reassesses the satirical graphic work of William Hogarth (1697-1764) by highlighting a variety of eighteenth-century themes that are of particular fascination to a contemporary audience. Hogarth's range of inquiry was extremely wide, touching upon topics from everyday life as well as upon more theoretical debates. The thematic sections of the exhibition reveal Hogarth's deep concern with the ills of the modern city, the dignity of and the dangers faced by professional women, and issues of theatricality, race, class, and taste. Moreover, Hogarth was an active participant in the public sphere, immersed in contemporary aesthetic, political, and physiognomic debates. William Hogarth Special thanks to the Microsoft Corporation for permission to use following biographical information from William Hogarth was an English painter and engraver who satirized the follies of his age. In 1753 Hogarth wrote The Analysis of Beauty, a statement of his aesthetic principles. Four years later he was appointed sergeant painter to George II. During the last five years of his life, Hogarth was engaged in political feuds with the controversial British political reformer John Wilkes, whom he had satirized in an engraving. Wilkes retaliated with an attack on Hogarth's painting Sigismunda (1759). Hogarth's last engraving, The Bathos, intended as a farewell work, was published in 1764. William Hogarth Click on the Pictures to Enlarge William Hogarth (1697-1764) used his prints to reflect the society that he found himself in. He dealth with many issues through his art; everything from urban decay to political decay. In his works we follow the journey of decline that Hogarth saw around him, and he reflected in familiar settings in his prints. In many instances we are able to follow the journey of some wayward soul on their travels into debauchery and onward past salvation. Such journeys are seen in The Harlot's Progress, The Rake's Progress, Industry and Idleness, and many more. Now it must be understood that not all of his works depicted the culture around him as decaying and infectious. Many of his prints and paintings comemorated great people or great scenes found in the literature of the time. Below is a meager sampling of some of his works. I have put some of my own explinations with a few of the prints. Keep in mind these are my interpretations and not authoritative. Many of my interpretations have been shaped by the help of an excellent Restoration Specialist; Dr. Catherine Ingrassia. Other interpretations have merely come to me through study of his work and authoritative texts. Please enjoy and if you have any corrections or comments please send them to me.
