Saint Joseph College Gallery West Hartford, CT http://www.sjc.edu/ The following essay is the Introduction, by Vincenza Uccello, M.F.A., Director of Collections, Saint Joseph College Gallery, from the catalogue for the exhibition titled "Childe Hassam: Prints of New England and Long Island," held at the Gallery in March, 1990. This essay is reprinted with permission of the author and Saint Joseph College. In 1874 a group of French artists boycotting the official Paris Salon presented their own exhibition of paintings. It was a momentous event in the history of art - the official recognition of a new plein-air style in painting. What these artists had in common was a deep involvement with rendering the ever-changing qualities of light and atmosphere in different hours of the day, different seasons and different weather conditions. Each painter experimented and devised methods and techniques of broken color and varying brush strokes to render the constant phenomenon of change relative to, and as an expression of, his own visual perception and artistic personality. The immediate reaction by the French public and critics alike was that of shock and derision. The movement was dubbed Impressionism after a painting by Monet entitled Impression, Sunrise

Equally adept at capturing the charms of country retreats and the excitement of modern cities, Hassam became the foremost chronicler of New York City at the turn of the century. In our day, he is best known for his depictions of flag-draped Fifth Avenue during World War I. This spring, The Metropolitan Museum of Art will offer Childe Hassam, American Impressionist , an unprecedented exhibition of about 120 of Hassam's finest oil paintings, watercolors, and pastels, and some 30 prints. Opening on June 10, the retrospective the first to appear in a museum since 1972 will celebrate Hassam's brilliant handling of color and light and will examine his responses to the advent of the modern era in view of his credo that "the man who will go down to posterity is the man who paints his own time and the scenes of every-day life around him."

    Biography: Childe Hassam, 1859 - 1935
    bibliography
Frederick Childe Hassam was born in 1859 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. In 1876 he was apprenticed to a local wood engraver and soon thereafter became a freelance illustrator. In the evenings he attended the life class at the Boston Art Club, then briefly studied anatomy with William Rimmer at the Lowell Institute, and took private lessons from the German-born painter Ignaz Gaugengigl. During the 1890s and the following two decades, Hassam spent his summers painting throughout New England. His favorite sites were Old Lyme, Connecticut, and Appledore, on the Isles of Shoals, off the coast of New Hampshire, where he produced some of his best known works. A prolific and industrious artist, Hassam painted numerous scenes of both the city and the countryside. Many of his early street scenes of Boston, Paris, and New York, with their reflections of wet pavement or of gaslight on the snow, evidenced a talent for capturing the effects of light and atmosphere. Shortly before his death, in East Hampton in August 1935, he arranged to bequeath all the paintings remaining in his studio to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. According to his wish they were sold to establish a fund for the purchase of American works to be donated to museums.

T en American Painters or The American Ten or The Ten - A group of American painters from New York and Boston who exhibited together from 1898-1919. They had been members of the Society of American Artists, but resigned from this organization upon deciding that its exhibitions were too too large and conservative. Most of the Ten had studied in Paris in the 1880s and were greatly influenced by French Impressionism . The Ten were were: Thomas E. Dewing (1851-1938), Edward E. Simmons (1852-1931), Julien Alden Weir (1852-1919), John Henry Twachtman (1853-1902), Joseph R. De Camp (1858-1923), Willard L. Tarbell (1 862-1938); with William Merritt Chase (American, 1849-1916) taking the place of Twachtman upon his death. Although their art was not particularly radical, they were important in the context of modern art in helping to establish a tradition of setting up exhibiting organizations independent of official bodies, foreshadowing The Eight and the Armory Show Examples of their work: William Merritt Chase (American, 1849-1916)
