Head of a Young Girl c.1895 Charcoal scetch for Alleluia Thomas Cooper Gotch, RI, 1854 -1931 Born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, Gotch came from a distinguished non-conformist family. In 1876 he left his father's business and started his training as an artist. He entered the Slade in 1879 and became close friends with Henry Scott Tuke. In 1881 he married Caroline Burland Yates and returned to Paris with her to study at Laurens' academy. Stanhope Forbes first met the Gotches in 1885, although they were not resident in Newlyn until 1891. In that same year the Gotches wintered in Florence, marking a change in his style of painting with a 'joyous sense of colour' that he experienced while there. Many of his works are said to bear a resemblance to the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Probably his most famous work is "Alleluia" 1896 (Tate Gallery, London). Click to open Frames Version

PAINTING IN WEST CORNWALL For at least two centuries, the light and landscape of Cornwall has attracted artists. Early visitors included J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851), Joseph Farington (1747-1821), Samuel Prout and William Brooks , while home-grown artists included the "Cornish Wonder" John Opie (1761-1807), as well as less well known painters such as Richard T. Pentreath (1806-1869) and John Henry Martin (1835-1908). The majority of the works produced by these painters were landscapes and seascapes, with very few genre works which were the hallmark of the later Newlyn artists The single most painted scene in Cornwall is almost certainly the enchanting landmark of St. Michael's Mount, situated in Mount's Bay, in the far west of the county. Artists have been capturing its qualities in every conceivable aspect, lit by brilliant sunshine or thrashed by raging storms, for many centuries. As well as St Michael's Mount, west Cornwall boasts two famous fishing ports whose names have become synonymous with two eras of British painting - Newlyn and St. Ives. Separated by the neck of the Penwith peninsula, Newlyn lies on the South coast of the peninsula, with St Ives some seven miles away on the North coast.

During his lifetime, Thomas Gotch was an unassuming man who preferred to work in committees, behind the scenes and to keep out of the limelight. Little has been published about this artist. Apart from the three or four major articles written while he was alive and short reference to him in the biographies and autobiographies of other artists of his time, there are only brief and repetitive biographical details in exhibition catalogues. Filling the gap The story contains other evidence that it was autobiographical; but it also raises a conundrum. If it was autobiographical and Tom and Carrie formed an alliance in the autumn of 1878, how did it happen that Tom subsequently had a flirtation with Bo Santley and nearly became engaged to Maria Tuke?

Thomas Cooper Gotch RBA RI (1854-1931) The painter of children T. C. Gotch was born in Northamptonshire, and followed a fairly conventional art tuition at Heatherleys (1876), the Slade, and in 1880 in Paris, in the studio of J. P. Laurens. There he met a fellow Slade student, Caroline Yates, whom he married in 1881. They visited Australia in 1883, and on return to Britain, Gotch helped in the foundation of the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists - he became the President of that body from 1913-28. The Gotches moved to Newlyn in 1887 - though Gotch was familiar with the area from as long ago as 1871 - and he became one of the colony of artists there. Though Gotch produced many pictures in the Newlyn School manner, and also helped in the foundation of the New English Art Club, his style completely altered following a visit to Italy in 1891-2. Thereafter he produced pictures of children, in a highly decorative and often Symbolist fashion. It is these pictures by which he is best known today. Gotch exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1880 through to 1931. He became RBA in 1885, and RI in 1912. As well as the visit to Australia already mentioned, he also travelled in Denmark (1889) and South Africa (1913), and his work is widely distributed.

He married the painter Caroline Yates in 1881. Life: Gotch studied under Alphonse Legros at the Slade School of Art from 1878 to 1880 and there became friendly with Henry Scott Tuke. He studied in Paris in the early 1880s and there began painting en plein-air . He became one of the central figures of the Newlyn School, settling in Newlyn in 1887. His works were notable for their rural subject matter and their concern to depict the changing effects of light. He also made his name as a portraitist, e.g. Sir William Drake in the Morning Room (1885; Private Collection), and in the 1890s as a painter of allegorical themes, for example, My Crown and Sceptre (1892; Sydney Art Gallery) and Death the Bride (1895; Alfred East Gallery, Kettering). Friendly with JW, many of Gotch's works were indebted to the tonal harmonies and compositional techniques of JW. Gotch was a founding member of the New English Art Club, at the opening exhibition of which in June 1888 JW showed A White Note (YMSM 44) and a recent etching of Brussels. Gotch was also a founding member of the Royal British Colony Society of Artists. He was also a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, of which JW was President from 1886 to 1888, and of the Royal Institution.
