The Bridgemen Art Library London The Story of Pygmalion and Galeta: Like many Greek myths, the story of Pygmalion and Galatea has slightly different versions. Pygmalion , King of Cyprus, in the most familiar of these versions created a lifelike statue of his ideal of womanhood. The statue which he called Galatea was so beautiful that he fell in love with his own creation. Aphrodite, the Goddess of Beauty and Love, took pity on the lovesick Pygmalion. She turned Galatea into a living woman and presided over the marriage of the two. The story is the subject of these nineteenth century paintings by Jean Leon Gerome. The story also inspired George Bernard Shaw to create Professor Higgins and Eliza Doolittle, the Pygmalion and Galatea of his play "Pygmalion." His best-known works are his oriental scenes. Two typical examples are in the Wallace Collection, in London. I was lucky enough to view the Wallace Collection. The collection is a beautiful gallery well hidden near to Oxford Street. It is regarded as the best place in the UK to see Orientalist Paintings from Europe. There are 2 paintings there accredited to Gerome, although The Guard of the Harem may not have been painted by Gerome himself. It was much smaller than i expected it to be however although the colours and the picture itself was magnificant, and well worth going to see. From the Wallace Collection in London. The Guard of the Harem The Draught Players I think for me it is the way Gerome captures the beauty of the female form, as well as the settings he uses that sparks my imagination. The 2 paintings listed below are set around the selling of female slaves. The vunerability, and nakedness of the females set against the opulance and richness of the garments worn by the men, to me really does capture the essence of slavery in an almost consensual manner, not like the non consensual slavery of old. Slave Auction The Slave Market The picture listed below is one that i can relate to in an odd sort of way. For me it is a picture with great personal meaning. It signifies what an M/s relationship is all about. A Master starting out with a valuable piece of marble. Slowly and carefully he carves, shapes, sculpts inch by inch, refining his work of art until he produces something he is very proud of. He is the one who gives the statue definition, shape, meaning, breath, and brings her to life even. Without him, she is nothing more than a piece of marble.

Gérôme painting "Thirst - Tigress and Cubs" (photograph c.1899) Born: Vesoul, France 11 May 1834 Died: Paris, France 10 Jan 1904 His schooling complete, in 1840 at the age of 16, he set out for Paris with a letter of introduction to Paul Delaroche Encouraged by Delaroche, he offered a drawing to the Magasin Pittoresque and had it accepted. Thereafter he became a regular contributor. He supplemented his allowance further by, together with his friends, mass-producing sets of 'stations of the cross' to be sold in the religious shops. In Italy, he spent much time studying the antiquities, which formed the basis for many of his later motifs, and it was in the Naples museum that he encountered the famous gladiatoral armour from Pompeii that was to inspire his gladiatorial scenes. However, his stay in Italy was cut short by a bout of typhoid fever and his mother had to travel from Vesoul to nurse him. Returning to Paris in the autumn of 1844, he entered the atelier of the famous Swiss painter and teacher Charles Gleyre (1806-1874) who had more or less taken over from Delaroche. He was a popular teacher and an excellent and erudite draughtsman, with a technique in oils considered to be one of the most secure at the time - this when oil paint was not yet supplied in tubes and a careful scientific mixing was required to avoid rapid deterioration of the pigments over time. Amongst his many later famous students, to whom he had obviously imparted his special techniques, were Monet, Renoir, Bazille and Whistler. Besides the usual drawing or painting from a model or cast, Gleyre also taught composition - a rare occurrence in an atelier. Remembering his own poverty as a student, he never charged attendance fees at his classes.
