John Henry Fuseli (1741-1825) Su vida Su obra Fuseli nació en Zürich, Suiza, siendo su auténtico apellido Füssli. Realizara una breve carrera como clérigo, estudiando luego arte en Berlín hasta 1770. Johann Heinrich Füssli was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1741, son of the portrait painter Johann Caspar Füssli. His father wanted him to be a priest and he even took orders in 1761, but his true passion was painting and for this reason he never practiced it. His childhood was spent with him surrounded by classics of the Western literature and by the best writers, poets and philosophers of Switzerland. At age 8 Fuseli started to copy his father's works. After denouncing a corrupt magistrate in Zurich, Fuseli was forced to take a trip to Germany and in Berlin he met the British ambassador Sir Joshua Reynolds, who urged him to take painting seriously. Fuseli went to London, where he lived from 1765 to 1770, when he went to Italy, and in Rome he studied Michelangelo's works in the Sistine Chapel, and adopted the Renaissance master's style.

Paul Mellon Collection From the Tour: British and American History Paintings of the 1700s Object 2 of 8 Henry Fuseli's dramatic painting, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1786, depicts the tense climax of Oedipus at Colonus, a drama by Sophocles. In that ancient Greek tragedy, King Oedipus had gone into self-imposed exile at Colonus, a town near Athens, after discovering to his horror that, unwittingly, he had murdered his father and married his own mother. Oedipus, having blinded himself in remorse, is depicted here with blood-red eyes in a thick, scabby paint the opposite of the normal use of smooth, clear textures for eyes. The kneeling Polynices, one of Oedipus' two sons, hopes to win his father's favor over his brother, who had usurped the throne. Outraged at both his unfaithful boys, Oedipus condemns them to die in battle by each other's hand. The blind king extends his powerful arms to curse them, while Polynices recoils as if struck a painful blow. Standing between her father and brother, Antigone seeks reconciliation. In contrast to Antigone's strength of will, her weeping sister, Ismene, personifies sorrow. Fuseli, a Swiss clergyman, became a classical scholar before studying art in Rome. After immigrating to London in 1780, Fuseli was elected the Royal Academy's professor of painting.

He chose subjects like Satan bridging Chaos, a Shepherd's Dream, Fairies from Shakespeare and Hamlet's Ghost. Benjamin Haydon (1853) praised the latter as "the finest conception of a ghost there ever was painted... There it quivered with martial stride, pointing to a place of meeting with Hamlet; and round its visored head was a halo of light that looked sulphurous, and made one feel as if one actually smelt hell, burning, cindery, and suffocating. The dim moon glittered behind; the sea roared in the distance, as if agitated by the presence of a supernatural spirit; and the ghost looked at Hamlet, with eyes that glared like the light in the eyes of lion, which is savagely growling over his bloody food." Fuseli, unlike his compositions, was not impressive to look at. What Haydon saw was "a little white-headed lion-faced man in an old flannel dressing-gown tied around his waist with a piece of rope and upon his head the bottom of Mrs Fuseli's work-basket." Today his most-reproduced work is The Nightmare (1782) which was painted after he had dreamed that he had made love to his unrequited sweetheart. It shows a young woman sleeping, her breast and legs dramatically thrust upwards, and the head of a phantom horse, with icy wisps of mane, rising above the bed. Perched on the woman's breast is a small hairy devil, impishly sinister. The horses's eyes bulge and its neck seems to strain to burst through the rent in the curtains and take possession of the world of shapes and solids. Rendered in apparitional whites and dusky-browns, it is a shudderingly effective visual landmark.
