With a frontispiece, two plates, and several illustrations in the text. Original blue boards, printed label on upper cover, slightly foxed here and there but generally a fine untrimmed copy as issued. First edition, one of a tiny number of large-paper copies. Only one other copy has been located (in the Essick collection, Fuseli's copy): the frontispiece is a stipple engraving proof before all letters by Benedetti after the painting by Fuseli. One of the largest book illustrations after Fuseli it measures almost 12 x 7 inches. The poems memorialise the death of Boothby's daughter Penelope at the age of five and include a laudatory reference to Fuseli; Boothby was a member of the Lichfield literary circle and was immortalised in a portrait by Joseph Wright of Derby. Fuseli has often been regarded as a forerunner of the Romantic art movement and a precursor of Symbolism and Surrealism. His most famous painting is The Nightmare (1781), in which an ape-like goblin sits on a young woman, who is sleeping in a strained posture. (William Blake's tribute to Fuseli) The Painter in Conversation with Johann Jakob Bodmer Fuseli was ordained a Zwinglian clergyman in 1761. Next year, in consequence of a pamphlet, in which he attacked the corrupted administration of a magistrate, Felix Grebel, he had to leave Zurich. Fuseli's fellow-polemicist, the theologian Johann Casper Lavater, later descibed his energetic friend: "His spirits are hurricane, his servants flames of fire. He goes on the wings of the wind. His laugh is the mockery of Hell, and his love a murderous lightning flash." Fuseli traveled through Germany, and spent then much time in Berlin. There worked on a German translation of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's Letters , which was published in 1763. Lavater and Fuseli remained friends. In 1788 appeared Fuseli's translation of Lavater's

JOHNSON, ST. PAUL’S CHURCH YARD, LONDON Note: Henry Fuseli and William Blake forever changed the course of British art. Within the staid, academic atmosphere of late eighteenth century painting these two fiery pathfinders produced imagery of both mystical and psychological intensity. Blake created his art and literature in almost total obscurity and was ‘discovered’ only after his death. Henry Fuseli (one of his few friends and supporters), however, rose to become one of the most influential artists of the times. Born in Switzerland, Fuseli was originally intended for the church. He soon left for Germany and in 1765 went to Britain. In London he was encouraged to practice art by none other than Reynolds. He thus went to study the art of the Renaissance masters in Italy for a period of nine years. Returning to London in 1779, Fuseli began his successful career as an artist. In 1788 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy, and an Academician two years later. Finally, in 1804, he was appointed Keeper (President) of the Academy. Of all Fuseli’s powerful imagery The Nightmare is undoubtedly the most famous. Fuseli actually executed two versions of the subject, one in 1781 and the second in 1791. This original engraving is the first authorized example of the second version, engraved by Thomas Holloway. Holloway (London, 1748 - Norwich, 1827) was a student of the Royal Academy. Later in his career, he was appointed Historical Engraver to King George the III.
