Fra Angelico (front) When Guido di Pietro became a Dominican friar at Fiesole, he changed his name to Giovanni and became known as Fra Giovanni da Fiesole. Italians called him Beato, "Blessed One." But the name by which we know him was given him as a tribute fourteen years after his death. Fra Angelico he became: "angelic brother." Unlike many friars, he took his vows seriously. Purity of form and space characterize his art; purity of soul, his life. His first efforts in art were as an illuminator. Later he moved to larger forms. The landscapes in his backgrounds are said to capture depth and perspective as well as any from the early Renaissance. Supposedly Angelico never painted without first praying and wept whenever he painted Christ. "To paint Christ one must know him," he said. His

Info Museums Patrons Restorations Fra Angelico and the Chapel of Nicholas V
St. Lawrence brought before the Emperor Valerian, Fra Angelico (Vicchio- Florence, c. 1395 - Rome, 1455) The current restoration of the Chapel of Nicholas V has magnificently recovered the exceptional beauty of the frescoes and gives us the opportunity to understand and appreciate the great genius of one of Christianity's finest painters, Fra Angelico. It is thanks to the generosity and vision of Mrs. Florence D'Urso, the Homeland Foundation and the New York Patrons that this important restoration has been made possible. The chapel has been restored by world-renowned restorer, Carlo Giantomassi, his wife, Donatella Zari, and their assistants. The restoration involved the cleaning of all the frescoes. A major challenge was the restoration of the original blue color, which had been lost due to previous restorations. Subtle movements of the walls throughout the centuries had also created cracks that were refilled in the past. These had to be controlled to insure that they were not causing damage to the frescoes. Fire damage and vandalism are evident in some areas and remain as a testimony to the sack of Rome in 1527 by the mercenaries of Charles V.

Special thanks to the Microsoft Corporation for permission to use following biographical information from Fra Angelico was an Italian painter of the early Renaissance who combined the life of a devout friar with that of an accomplished painter. Although his teacher is unknown, he apparently began his career as an illuminator of missals and other religious books. He began to paint altarpieces and other panels; among his important early works are the Madonna of the Star (1428?-1433, San Marco, Florence) and Christ in Glory Surrounded by Saints and Angels (National Gallery, London), which depicts more than 250 distinct figures. Among other works of that period are two of the Coronation of the Virgin (San Marco and Louvre, Paris) and The Deposition and The Last Judgment (San Marco). His mature style is first seen in the Madonna of the Linen Weavers (1433, San Marco), which features a border with 12 music-making angels. In Florence and Rome In 1436 the Dominicans of Fiesole moved to the convent of San Marco in Florence, which had recently been rebuilt by Michelozzo. Angelico, sometimes aided by assistants, painted many frescoes for the cloister, chapter house, and entrances to the 20 cells on the upper corridors. The most impressive of these are The Crucifixion, Christ as a Pilgrim, and Transfiguration. His altarpiece for San Marco (1439?) is one of the first representations of what is known as a Sacred Conversation: the Madonna flanked by angels and saints who seem to share a common space. In 1445 Angelico was summoned to Rome by Pope Eugenius IV to paint frescoes for the now destroyed Chapel of the Sacrament in the Vatican. In 1447, with his pupil Benozzo Gozzoli, he painted frescoes for the cathedral in Orvieto. His last important works, frescoes for the chapel of Pope Nicholas in the Vatican, are Scenes from the Lives of Saints Stephen and Lawrence (1447-1449), probably painted from his designs by assistants.

c.1400 - 1455 so, fra angelico was a male prostitute who numbered among his clients, st francis of assissi (sic) and thomas of aquinas (sic). he was arrested by the florentine cops circa 1436, charged, stood for trial, found guilty of much original sin and confined to a cell for the rest of his life to paint murals. such is life... but not to worry! especially when there's Eternal Happiness and Everything after Death, n all that, and nor/neither need the story that fra angelico was a drag queen concern us overmuch here, for if the truth be told, and it always must be, then fra angelico was the long lost father of sandro botticelli on his mother's side and known by his brothers to possess the finest pair of testicles in all of known christendom...
searching the archives, it is not yet known how much television was seen by the pubescent fra, or his brothers, but it is thought to have been very little and of no particular consequence in his subsequent development as an iconographer of the female form and her function in the great scheme of things.

Beato Fra Angelico: Patron of Artists
On June 23, 1983, Pope John Paul II granted official cultus to Fra Angelico, who is now a Blessed with an office, a mass and obligatory memory (and now Patron of Artists). Fra Angelico, baptized Guido di Pietro, was born around 1400 in Vicchio, a Tuscan town near Florence. At the age of twenty, he entered the Dominican Order at the priory of San Domenico in Fiesole. He died in Rome on February 18, 1455 and is buried in Santa Maria sopra Minerva where his tomb remains an object of veneration. Was this remarkable priest a painter of the Middle Ages or the Renaissance? The answer varies with the preconceptions of the critics, many of whom consider him a painter of transition since he immortalizes in color the genius of Aquinas and Dante as well as that of Raphael and Leonardo.
John Rubba, O.P. Fra Angelico
John Canady The Lives of the Painters
The Dominican motto "Contemplata aliis tradere" (to share what you have seen, have contemplated), reaches its zenith in Beato Angelico. The great contemporary mystic Adrienne von Speyr (+ 1967) sees Fra Angelico, while she is in an ecstatic state, being questioned by her spiritual director, and companion in mission, Fr. Hans Urs von Balthasar:
"I see him (Adrienne smiles). He loves the Way that leads to God and is held in a continual contemplation of this Way. His whole prayer lives based on his Way, and if he has joined an order and has chosen God at all, it is to remain in his Way. And if he paints, then he always paints this Way. The saints he paints, the angels he presents, are all for him the expression of this Way. And in everything he experiences - even theological, philosophical, even if it is something extreme that remains incomprehensible to him - he can apparently only concur if it can be brought into harmony with this Way. As soon as he comes to the Way, everything is clear to him, and he would be very capable of drawing very subtle distinctions. It is as if God had designated him to represent this Way to Him. So everything is also related that is given to him is contemplation, everything that he experiences in prayer and in daily life, everything is referred to this Way leading to God.
