24. Amy Steedman: Saint Fra Angelico
Saint fra angelico by Amy Steedman The name by which this second great painter is known is fra angelico, but that was only the name he earned in later years.

Saint Fra Angelico
by Amy Steedman early a hundred years had passed by since Giotto lived and worked in Florence, and in the same hilly country where he used to tend his sheep another great painter was born.
Many other artists had come and gone, and had added their golden links of beauty to the chain of Art which bound these years together. Some day you will learn to know all their names and what they did. But now we will only single out, here and there, a few of those names which are perhaps greater than the rest. Just as on a clear night, when we look up into the starlit sky, it would bewilder us to try and remember all the stars, so we learn first to know those that are most easily recognised - the Plough, or the Great Bear, as they shine with a clear steady light against the background of a thousand lesser stars.
The name by which this second great painter is known is Fra Angelico, but that was only the name he earned in later years. His baby name was Guido, and his home was in a village close to where Giotto was born.
He was not a poor boy, and did not need to work in the fields or tend the sheep on the hillside. Indeed, he might have soon become rich and famous, for his wonderful talent for painting would have quickly brought him honours and wealth if he had gone out into the world. But instead of this, when he was a young man of twenty he made up his mind to enter the convent at Fiesole, and to become a monk of the Order of Saint Dominic.

    Fra Angelico (Guido di Pietro)
Early Renaissance Fra Angelico was one of the most celebrated artists of the early Renaissance. A Dominican monk, based in Florence, all his art was religious. Though nothing is known of his training he appeared to clearly understand the innovations of Masaccio. This is evident in an early painting, Annunciation (Cortona, Diocesan Museum), probably dating from the late I420s, where the architecture of the loggia, which has a single vanishing point. The Coronation of the Virgin was painted in the 1430s for his own convent at San Domenico in Fiesole. It shows a clarity of colour in the Gothic tradition. An understanding of Masaccio's frescoes is displayed in Crucifixion with St. Dominic . The simple humanity of Christ, in extremis, with his head sunk is reminiscent of Masaccio's alterpiece at Pisa. In 1438 Angelico and his assistants began his greatest work, the decoration of his monastery in Florence, now a superb museum dedicated to his work. In scenes intended for meditation (many are in the monks' cells) he achieved a sense of blissful, radiant simplicity and great emotional directness.

Audio text for The Adoration of the Magi
This complex and colorful work comes from Florence in the mid-1400'sthe early Italian Renaissance. It represents the Adoration of the Magithe three kings bringing gifts to the Christ Child twelve days after his birth. The scene focuses on the delicate moment when they arrive to kneel before the infant, who would, Christians believe, become king of all. This joyous event know as the Epiphany symbolizes the recognition of Christ by the pagan world. It is traditionally celebrated on January 6th, or twelfth night, the last of the 12 days of Christmas. An excited throng representing all humanity, from richly clad nobles to peasants in homespun, winds its way down a steep path from the upper right. It disappears as the path continues between the mountain and the buildings, then spills out once more from the arch at the left, as if from a cornucopia. All this surging activity resolves itself in one quiet, tender moment in the foreground where a mighty king in a robe of the palest rose leans forward to kiss the infant's tiny foot.

This film is preserved in the Roland Collection primarily as an example of early experiments in art-critical film by Carlo Ragghianti, who was to become one of Italy's most influential art critics and educators. The film presents a critical analysis of Fra Angelico's style, which blended traditional Gothic forms with the revolutionary ideas of his contemporaries, Masaccio and Brunelleschi.

The work of this Florentine is one of the glories of the early Renaissance. His spacious, richly colored compositions are at once human and profound in their religious feeling. The timeless meditations which accompany the illustrations are intended to lead the reader into a contemplation of the mysteries of the Rosary that are portrayed and, from there, into a deeper union with the Lord. The prayer intentions were originally formulated by that great Marian apostle, St. Louis Grignion de Montfort, and were adapted here as an aid to concentrating on the mystery being prayed. Of the Rosary Pope John XXIII said that in reciting it, "A poetic atmosphere which places before our eyes the sweet figure of the Madonna is created, the mysteries of the life of our Lord are made familiar to all, and the challenges of Jesus with respect to our life are caused to be intensely felt."
    Reviews
Through the Rosary with Fra Angelico is an outstanding little art booklet which illustrates each mystery of the Rosary with a detail from some work of Fra Angelico. They are done in vibrant color which really does them justice. Included in the booklet is a brief history of the Rosary, an explanation of how to say it, and, for each mystery, biblical citations and prayer intentions which come from the work of St. Louis Grignion de Montfort. This little beauty was put together by Domenico Marcucci. The cost is a mere $2.95."
