, James ... Purchase Art Prints James Ensor (Belgian, 1860-1949) Biography Born in Ostend, Belgium where his parents had a souvenir shop. Ensor attended the Brussels Beaux-Arts from 1877-1880. A founder member of the group XX, from which he was nearly expelled because of the originality of his art, he began to be respected towards the end of the century. The theme of masks is central to work of Ensor. It produces strangely compelling works of peerless originality, charged with meanings psychological, intellectual and pictural, passing indirect judgement on the nature of mankind and his deepest convictions. A precursor of Expressionism, he influenced Emil Nolde (who adopted his theme of the mask) and Paul Klee. His fantastical universe foreshadows Surrealism. Artists James Ensor Born 1860, Died 1949
Painter, Draftsman
Belgian
Except for three years studying history and religious painting at the Brussels academy, James Ensor, a Belgian painter, printmaker, and draftsman, lived in Ostend, Belgium, all his life. He began his artistic career as a portrait painter but soon became involved with the avant-garde group Les XX (the Twenty), whose goal was to promote new artistic developments throughout Europe. Although Ensor was considered the group’s leader and founder, he had sharp differences of opinion with other group members. Art critics treated the group harshly, and Les XX disbanded after a decade. In the mid-1880s, Ensor suffered from an ulcer and from a personal crisis: his family forbade him to marry the woman he loved. He returned to painting religious subjects and plunged to the depths of despair when he decided to sell the contents of his studio in the 1890s. After the turn of the century, Ensor finally won acclaim and respectability. He was knighted and given the title of Baron. The 1908 publication of a book about his life and works confirmed his standing and reputation. In later years, he wrote music, designed sets for ballets, and continued to paint until his death at eighty-nine.

Interesting Stuff : Like Bosch before him, much of Ensor's work is filled with lots of grotesque, macabre figures. From the work above, you can tell he's quite a fan of striking colors as well. Ensor - Christ
Comparison Chart James Ensor Jesus Born in Ostend in 1860 Born away in a manger, AD Founding member of "Les XX", a short-lived group of artists Founder of a major world religion still practiced by millions today Was persecuted by angry art critics Was persecuted by angry Romans Left his mark in paintings Left his mark on a shroud For a time during his career he really identified with Christ, feeling his suffering as an obscure artist with unkind critics paralleled Christ's suffering. (If he was really suffering, shouldn't he have identified more with Job? And, I mean, how bad could life have actually been? It's not like anyone nailed him to a cross or anything. Ah, but I digress...) That is, until he became more widely known and loved as an artist. Then he cheered up. So much for the similarity. You can find other similarities in the handy Ensor-Christ comparison chart to the right.

James Sidney Ensor born: Ostend, Belgium; 13 April 1860
died: Ostend, Belgium; 19 November 1949 Ensor's father was a British engineer and his mother was from Ostend, Belgium. Ostend was a small seaside resort town. His mother supported the family by running a souvenir and gift shop. The shop sold Chinese goods, seashells, and Carnival masks, elements that play a strong part in Ensor's art. Ensor's sister, Mariette, was born about a year after him. At Sixteen Ensor was already showing his talent for art. These two pictures are made with oil paint on cardboard packing from his mother's gift shop, in Ostend, Belgium.

James Ensor took on religion, politics, and art in this scene of Christ entering contemporary Brussels in a Mardi Gras parade. In response to the French pointillist style that depicted bland, orderly bourgeoisie with tiny, uniform strokes of paint, Ensor used palette knives, spatulas, and both ends of his brush to put down patches of colors with expressive freedom. He made several preparatory drawings for the painting, including one in the Getty Museum's collection. Ensor's society is a mob, threatening to trample the viewer-a crude, ugly, chaotic, dehumanized sea of masks, frauds, clowns, and caricatures . Public, historical, and allegorical figures along with the artist's family and friends made up the crowd. The haloed Christ at the center of the turbulence is in part a self-portrait: mostly ignored, a precarious, isolated visionary amidst the herd-like masses of modern society. Ensor's Christ functioned as a political spokesman for the poor and oppressed-a humble leader of the true religion, in opposition to the atheist social reformer Emile Littré, shown in bishop's garb holding a drum major's baton leading on the eager, mindless crowd. After rejection by Les XX , the artists' association that Ensor had helped to found, the painting was not exhibited publicly until 1929. Ensor displayed

and Pieter Bruegel the Elder , Ensor turned toward avant-garde themes and styles. He took his subject matter principally from Oostende's holiday crowds, which filled him with revulsion and disgust. Portraying individuals as clowns or skeletons or replacing their faces with carnival masks, he represented humanity as stupid, smirking, vain, and loathsome. Outstanding in this vein is his immense canvas Christ's Entry Into Brussels in 1889 (1888, J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, California).

Ensor, James Ensor, Baron Pronunciation Key Ensor, James Ensor, Baron Entry of Christ into Brussels, were rejected as scandalous. While the public and press were at first hostile to his work, his paintings continued to be exhibited, and he gradually won worldwide acclaim. In 1929, Ensor was made a baron by King Albert. His home in Ostend became a museum after his death. His early style of painting is characterized by somber color, thick impasto, and an earthy realism with occasional hints of the fantastic. Toward 1883 his palette lightened, and by 1887 his paintings were flooded with intense light and strong color. From 1887 to 1900 he produced his most inventive and original work. Ensor's sources included the grotesque fantasies of Bosch, Bruegel, and Callot. Among his masterpieces is The Temptation of St. Anthony
