    Durer's Polyhedra
Albrecht Durer, the remarkable German renaissance printmaker (1471-1528), made an important contribution to the polyhedral literature in his 1525 book, Underweysung der Messung, available in English translation as Painter's Manual . It was one of the first books to teach the methods of perspective, and was highly regarded throughout the sixteenth century. Durer travelled to Italy to learn perspective and wanted to publish the methods so they were not kept secret among a few artists. Who he learned from is not known, but Luca Pacioli is a likely possibility. Some of the techniques and illustrations follow very closely the work of Piero della Francesca Durer's Underweysung der Messung contains a very interesting discussion of perspective and other techniques and it typifies the renaissance idea that polyhedra are models worthy of an artist 's attention. More importantly, this book presents the earliest known examples of polyhedral nets , i.e., polyheda unfolded to lie flat for printing. The image at right is Durer's drawing of the net of an icosahedron . While the net is correct, his techniques of perspective were still under development, and it is interesting to observe that the projection at the upper right has a number of inaccuracies.

Durer, Albrecht. Vier Bucher von menschlicher Proportion. Nurnberg, Hieronymus Formschneider for Durer's widow, 31 Oct., 1528.
First edition of Durer's famous treatise on artistic anatomy, containing 142 woodcuts by him showing human figures of varying height and girth in different postures; all with their proper measurements and porportions. This book on human proportions was first published after Durer's death and contains an elegy by his friend Prickheimer. According to Heller: "These proportions are the most extensive work Durer composed and, according to the manuscript in Dresden, it is said to have been his first work, which already had been completed in 1523, but was not issued before his death." Written, designed and illustrated by Durer, this work is notable for its extraordinary series of anthropometrical woodcuts. The first two books deal with the proper proportions of the human form; the third changes the proportions according to mathematical rules, giving examples of extremely fat and thin figures, while the last book depicts the human figure in motion and treats of foreshortennings. Durer's work is the first attempt to apply anthropometry to aesthetics. The woodcuts represent the first attempt to employ cross-hatching to depict shades and shadows in wood engraving. Durer was born in Nuremberg Germany in 1471. His father, a goldsmith, would be the first art teacher to his son. After studying with his father, Durer would next study with a local master learning the trade of engraving woodcuts for various illustrations. At that time
Nuremberg and southern Germany was a center for publishing. Woodcuts and engravings were used in creating illustrations for the documents published there. 16th century German art was in part influenced by the Gothic style of the Middle Ages and by the current religious movement: the Reformation and the teachings of Martin Luther. During his lifetime Durer, like the later Rembrandt, would paint a number of self portraits. This, also like Rembrandt, showed his lifelong curiosity with self exploration and with his role as an artist.

76. Albrecht Durer's Melencolia
Early in the sixteenth century, the famous German artists and engravers, albrecht durer and Lucas Cranach, were influenced to some extent by alchemical ideas
http://www.alchemylab.com/melancholia.htm
Interpretation of this Drawing (by John Read) Early in the sixteenth century, the famous German artists and engravers, Albrecht Durer and Lucas Cranach, were influenced to some extent by alchemical ideas and symbolism, but they left no pictorial impression of an alchemist or his laboratory. Durer (1471-1528), one of the two greatest artists Germany has ever produced, was particularly skilled in drawing on the block for the wood-cutter and in engraving on copper with his own unsurpassed hand. In 1513 and 1514 he wrought three engravings on copper that will rank for all time among the world's select masterpieces of this form of art. These were "The Knight " (1513), "St. Jerome in his Study" (1514), and "Melencolia" (1514). There is no evidence that Durer had an acquaintance with alchemy so intimate as, say, that of Chaucer in an earlier age; nevertheless, alchemy formed an essential ingredient of the cultural background of his times. To contemporary men of culture in general, as to the alchemist in particular, the "Melencolia" must have appeared as a rich repository of the pictorial symbolism of alchemy. The Roman numeral "I" following the engraved title suggests at once that Durer had it in mind to design and execute a series of four copper-engravings illustrating the Four Temperaments: melancholic, phlegmatic, choleric, and sanguine. These were linked in the medieval mind with the Four Elements of the alchemists and certain other mystical groups of four, a magical number inherited from the early civilizations that flourished long before the time of Pythagoras.

    Albrecht Durer
    Birth Year : 1471
    Death Year : 1528
    Country : Germany
Albrecht Dürer, the most gifted painter and engraver of the German Renaissance and Reformation period, was born in Nuremberg. He learned the techniques of engraving in the workshop of his father, a goldsmith, before being apprenticed in 1486 to the realistic Flemish painter Michael Wolgemuth. Dürer's earliest recognized work was a self-portrait painted at the age of thirteen. It was the first in a series that continued throughout his life, indicative of an introspective self-analysis. By 1493, after a trip to Colmar where he admired the paintings and engravings of Martin Schongauer, his self-portraits indicated a questioning and deeply thoughtful spirit. Dürer went to Venice for the first time in 1494 bringing back with him copies of Mantegna's works and many watercolor and pencil sketches of nature.
The Renaissance ideal of the complete man - the artist as scholar and gentleman - appealed to Dürer who had begun his lifelong search for new ideas, theories, and techniques, and for the solution to the problem of combining realism with abstract concepts. Upon his return to Nuremberg, where he remained for ten years, he devoted himself largely to the making of woodcuts and engravings, refining the woodcut to a degree hitherto unknown and raising it to the highest form of graphic art. His prints were distributed all over Europe and when he returned to Italy in 1505, he was received with respect and admiration. Dürer worked and studied in Venice and Bologna for two years, then returned to Nuremberg where he remained until 1520 when he made a trip to the Low Countries to study the older Flemish masters.

Strauss in his catalogue raisonne, Albrecht Durer Woodcuts and Woodblocks , surveys the state of critical dispute about the number of pieces definitely created by Durer and not simply by others treying to imitate his accomplishments. Strauss and Panofsky are the most conservative; Winkler "who undertook the most thorough examination of the illustrations, concluded that seveenty-three are by Durer." Others are still more inclusive. Wolfgang Hutt's Albrecht Durer 1471 bis 1528: Das gesampte graphische Werk: Druckgraphik (1970), assigns 74 of the woodcuts to Durer; Alain Borer and Ceceile Bon's

Albrecht Durer's woodcuts for The Large Woodcut Passion
Durer began the Large Passion c, 1496-97; Strauss thinks it quite possible that The Flagellation (Bartsch 8, Strauss 37),was the first print in the series. Over the next few years, Durer added six additional woodcuts, and the seven were sold as single sheets. Durer returned to the series c. 1510, adding 4 more woodcuts, and published the series with a frontispiece and a Latin text by Benedictus Chelidonius printed on the verso of the prints. Other works in the series include The Agony in the Garden (c. 1496-97, though possibly 1498: B. 6, S. 38)

February 2001 Albrecht Durer Albrecht Durer (AL brekt DUHR er) learned the skills of metalworking from his father, who was a goldsmith. Durer travel widely in Europe, and there he studied painting, made prints and created illustrations for books.
Since there were no cameras in the fifteenth century or advance methods of printing as there is nowadays, woodcuts helped spread ideas and they became a very popular pictorial medium since many prints could be made from one woodcut. Durer refined the woodcut to a degree unknown before and it became the highest form of graphic art in those times.
Durer's earliest known work is a self-portrait, which he painted at the age of thirteen. This great northern Renaissance artist also made engravings (which is another printmaking device) and produced many fine paintings, drawing and treatises on geometry and military fortifications before he died in 1528. RHINOCEROS - Why is this rhinoceros so amazing? You will notice that this rhinoceros is different from the real one and it's because Durer made this woodcut even though he had never seen a rhinoceros!
