The most gifted painter and engraver of the German Renaissance and Reformation period, was born in Nuremberg. He learned the techniques of engraving in the workshop of his father, a goldsmith, before being apprenticed in 1486 to the realistic Flemish painter Michael Wolgemuth. Dürer's earliest recognized work was a self-portrait painted at the age of thirteen. It was the first in a series that continued throughout his life, indicative of an introspective self-analysis. By 1493, after a trip to Colmar where he admired the paintings and engravings of Martin Schongauer, his self-portraits indicated a questioning and deeply thoughtful spirit. Dürer went to Venice for the first time in 1494 bringing back with him copies of Mantegna's works and many watercolor and pencil sketches of nature. The Renaissance ideal of the complete man and the artist as scholar and gentleman appealed to Dürer who had begun his lifelong search for new ideas, theories, and techniques, and for the solution to the problem of combining realism with abstract concepts. Upon his return to Nuremberg, where he remained for ten years, he devoted himself largely to the making of woodcuts and engravings, refining the woodcut to a degree hitherto unknown and raising it to the highest form of graphic art. His prints were distributed all over Europe and when he returned to Italy in 1505 he was received with respect and admiration. Dürer worked and studied in Venice and Bologna for two years, then returned to Nuremberg where he remained until 1520 when he made a trip to the Low Countries to study the older Flemish masters.

Ed ecco, c'era un trono nel cielo, e sul trono uno stava seduto. Colui che stava seduto era simile nell'aspetto a diaspro e cornalina. Un arcobaleno simile a smeraldo avvolgeva il trono. Attorno al trono, poi, c'erano ventiquattro seggi e sui seggi stavano seduti ventiquattro vegliardi avvolti in candide vesti con corone d'oro sul capo. Dal trono uscivano lampi, voci e tuoni; sette lampade accese ardevano davanti al trono, simbolo dei sette spiriti di Dio. Davanti al trono vi era come un mare trasparente simile a cristallo. In mezzo al trono e intorno al trono vi erano quattro esseri viventi pieni d'occhi davanti e di dietro. Il primo vivente era simile a un leone, il secondo essere vivente aveva l'aspetto di un vitello, il terzo vivente aveva l'aspetto d'uomo, il quarto vivente era simile a un'aquila mentre vola. I quattro esseri viventi hanno ciascuno sei ali, intorno e dentro sono costellati di occhi;

Here are portraits of his father and mother My father suffered much and toiled painfully all his life, for he had no resources other than the proceeds of his trade from which to support himself and his wife and family. He led an honest, God-fearing life. His character was gentle and patient. He was friendly towards all and full of gratitude to his Maker. He cared little for society and nothing for worldly amusements. A man of very few words and deeply pious, he paid great attention to the religious education of his children. His most earnest hope was that the high principles he instilled into their minds would render them ever more worthy of divine protection and the sympathy of mankind. He told us every day that we must love God and be honourable in our dealings with our neighbours. self portrait collection of such self-portraits Here is a portrait of Wolgemut ... the new art must be based upon science - in particular, upon mathematics, as the most exact, logical, and graphically constructive of the sciences.

Propone l'opera Melancholia I dell'artista rinascimentale di Norimberga, oltre a note biografiche e stilistiche.
http://utenti.lycos.it/exlibris/durer.html

Painter and printmaker generally regarded as the greatest German Renaissance artist.
http://www.kfki.hu/~arthp/bio/d/durer/biograph.html
Biography
Painter and printmaker generally regarded as the greatest German Renaissance artist. His vast body of work includes altarpieces and religious works, numerous portraits and self-portraits, and copper engravings. His woodcuts, such as the Apocalypse series (1498), retain a more Gothic flavour than the rest of his work.
Education and early career
Dürer was the second son of the goldsmith Albrecht Dürer the Elder, who had left Hungary to settle in Nuremberg in 1455, and of Barbara Holper, who had been born there. Dürer began his training as a draughtsman in the goldsmith's workshop of his father. His precocious skill is evidenced by a remarkable self-portrait done in 1484, when he was 13 years old (Albertina, Vienna), and by a Madonna with Musical Angels, done in 1485, which is already a finished work of art in the late Gothic style. In 1486, Dürer's father arranged for his apprenticeship to the painter and woodcut illustrator Michael Wohlgemut, whose portrait Dürer would paint in 1516. After three years in Wohlgemuth's workshop, he left for a period of travel. In 1490 Dürer completed his earliest known painting, a portrait of his father (Uffizi, Florence) that heralds the familiar characteristic style of the mature master.

Albrecht Durer
Albrecht Durer was born in Nuremberg, Germany in 1471. As a painter, engraver and designer, he was one of the foremost artists of his country during the Renaissance. His multiple talents earned him the nickname "Leonardo of the North". He died in 1528. Durer probably learned how to engrave from his father who was a goldsmith. As a youth he was apprenticed to Michel Wohlgemuth for three years. He felt German art of the time was clumsy and old fashioned. As a result, he became the first north European artist to travel to Italy solely to study Italian art. He refined his painting skills by working with Venetian and Flemish artists. In engraving he combined the methods of Martin Schongauer with the lessons of Andrea Mantegna. His woodcuts were amazingly detailed, inventive, and sometimes grim. In his art he combined a love for the ancient world with a deep Christian spirit. Durer also became the favorite painter of Emperor Maxmillian I. Pictured above is his "Knight, Death, and the Devil" (1514). Other famous works include: "The Four Horsemen" (woodcut, 1498), "The Great Piece of Turf" (1503), and "Hieronymus Holzschuher" (oil on wood, 1526). Home Teacher’s Lounge Genealogy Quest
