Durand Oil on canvas, 1845 AIHA Collection: Gift of the Gallery of Fine Arts An Old Man's Reminiscences is a tapestry of nostalgic, idealistic memories painted during the height of the industrialization of America. From the shelter of the woods, an old man gazes out upon scenes that were typical of rural agrarian life in the Northeast in the first half of the 19th century. Children are playing hoop and other games in fields near the schoolhouse. Cattle graze near the bank of the stream and farmers are haying. Two men fish in the stream, and a young couple sit under a tree. Durand and Thomas Cole were close friends, and they often hiked and sketched together in the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains. Springfield Museum of Art Asher B. Durand Associated with the Hudson River school of landscape painters, Asher B. Durand belonged to a generation of gifted artists which included Thomas Cole, John Trumbull and Thomas Doughty. Born on August 21, 1796 in Jefferson, New Jersey, Durand grew up the son of a watchmaker and silversmith. Durand himself had been taught to engrave in silver and did so with distinction until his engraving occupation was supplanted by painting in the 1830's. Durand's connection with the nature he saw and painted was deeply religious. Durand conceived art as a vision of God through nature. Not attracted to the sublime aspect of nature like his contemporary Cole, Durand stands out for his sensitive response to environment, observing every shift in color and terrain. He assumed the leading role among American landscape painters upon Cole's death. Durand died in 1886. After 1835, Durand devoted himself to painting, producing portraits of several of the Presidents. After a year of travel and study in Europe, he turned to landscape painting, becoming a leader of the Hudson River school . At first he was painstaking and meticulous, but later his rendering became more spontaneous. Examples of his work are In the Woods and The Beeches (Metropolitan Mus.); Woodland Brook and Franconia Notch (N.Y. Public Library); and Mountain Forest (Corcoran Gall.). Durand was a founder of the National Academy of Design, New York City, and its president from 1845 to 1861. Two of his allegorical paintings are there, Morning of Life and Evening of Life.

The Artist Thomas Cole that inspired him to create and exhibit landscape paintings. The two men formed a friendship that lasted until Cole’s death; Durand subsequently became known as the leading figure of the group of artists described as the Hudson River School. In 1840, following in the footsteps of other American artists, Durand left for Europe on the "grand tour" of Europe. What he saw there, however, did not impress him, for he felt that the grandeur of the American landscape, Divine creation unspoiled, far surpassed anything the Europeans had. Durand successfully reflected that sentiment in his sensitively rendered, intimate landscapes of the New England and Hudson River Valley areas of the United States. In addition, his writings on landscape painting, which were published in the art journal The Crayon , influenced a generation of American painters.
