Biography page
Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Doyles were a prosperous Irish-Catholic family, who had a prominent position in the world of Art. Charles Altamont Doyle, Arthur's father, a chronic alcoholic, was the only member of his family, who apart from fathering a brilliant son, never accomplished anything of note. At the age of twenty-two, Charles had married Mary Foley, a vivacious and very well educated young woman of seventeen. Mary Doyle had a passion for books and was a master storyteller. Her son Arthur wrote of his mother's gift of "sinking her voice to a horror-stricken whisper" when she reached the culminating point of a story. There was little money in the family and even less harmony on account of his father's excesses and erratic behavior. Arthur's touching description of his mother's beneficial influence is also poignantly described in his biography, "In my early childhood, as far as I can remember anything at all, the vivid stories she would tell me stand out so clearly that they obscure the real facts of my life." After Arthur reached his ninth birthday, the wealthy members of the Doyle family offered to pay for his studies. He was in tears all the way to England, where for seven years he had to go to a Jesuit boarding school. Arthur loathed the bigotry surrounding his studies and rebelled at corporal punishment, which was prevalent and incredibly brutal in most English schools of that epoch.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, the son of Charles Altamont Doyle, a civil servant in the Edinburgh Office of Works, and Mary (Foley) Doyle. His father suffered from epilepsy and alcoholism and was institutionalised. He died in an asylum in 1893. Doyle's mother kept a boarding house. Doyle was educated in Jesuit schools and later studied at Edinburgh University, qualifying as a doctor in 1885. After graduation Doyle practiced medicine until 1891, when he became a full time writer. Creativity was apparent in Doyle's ancestry: his grandfather was a famous caricaturist and his uncle was a well-known illustrator. Doyle's father was an architect, designer and book illustrator. Doyle himself was an admirer of Edgar Allan Poe and Emile Gaboriau.

Dr. Kittle and Dr. Doyle—
Kinsmen Through Medicine
and Belle Letters
By Robert Cotner Caxtonian March 1997 here is a kinship between Caxtonian Fred Kittle and English litterateur, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, that transcends the usual relationship of collector and the one collected. It is safe to say that few know Dr. Doyle as Dr. Kittle does. Both were trained as physicians, both cultivated broad interests from their earliest years, and both surrounded themselves with the legacies of literary and artistic accomplishment. Kittle's Doyle collection began in the mid-1950s, when he acquired the original manuscript of Doyle's, The Romance of Medicine , a 19-page, handwritten medical lecture that Doyle gave on October 3, 1910, at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, London. Kittle himself is currently working on his own manuscript of a book that will delineate all of the particulars about The Romance of Medicine and that will include in its context a reprinting of Doyle's own hand-written text. The study will be published by the Arthur Conan Doyle Society this spring. Between the acquisition of his first manuscript and his most recent, Kittle has become, while assembling what is recognized as one of the world's finest Doyle collections, a late-20th-Century comrade of Doyle, a scholar in his own right on the life, times, and work of the world's greatest detective-writer and his family.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Can a writer be too successful? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle might have asked himself this question when his most famous character, Sherlock Holmes, became more powerful than his creator. Like Dr. Frankenstein and his monster, Conan Doyle could not control the force he'd unleashed upon the world. Readers believed in the fictional detective's existence so ardently that they wrote to him about real cases and mourned his sudden death a ploy by Conan Doyle to free himself for more lofty literary pursuits. But Holmes would not die; the public would not let him. Conan Doyle revived him for his reading public, but forbade mention of his name within earshot. He spent his last years marginalized and misunderstood while his famous creation grew ever more beloved.
A Born Storyteller
Born on May 22, 1859, to Mary and Charles Altamont Doyle, Conan Doyle was one of 10 children, seven of whom would survive into adulthood (and two of whom were given the compound surname Conan Doyle in honor of a paternal uncle). The youngest son of renowned caricaturist John Doyle, Charles was outshone by his brothers James, Henry, and Richard in professional achievement. While Charles worked as an Edinburgh civil servant, brother James was the author of The Chronicles of England;

He was a knight, a soldier, a spiritualist, a whaler, a doctor, a journalist, and most of all, he was adventurous. He was not the quiet type of person, so he enjoyed expressing himself. Arthur Conan Doyle was born on the 22nd of May 1859 in Picardy Place, Edinburgh. The second child of Charles Altamont and Mary Foley, he was thought t have been named after the legendary medieval king, Arthur, of the Round Table. Doyle was also named after his granduncle, Michael Edward Conan. He was a descendant of the Irish, and was of the Roman Catholic religion. Doyle had a grandfather, John Doyle. He was political cartoonist, who, financially supported the family.1 Doyle had a pretty rough home life because his father was an alcoholic. As he grew up, Doyle had to take more of the responsibilities around the house into his own hands, because his father was either too sick or drunk to fulfill his daily work at home. Doyle’s mother, Mary Foley, was a homemaker who took care of her son Arthur and his brothers and sisters, and also worked and cleaned the house everyday.2 Doyle’s early education started when he was about seven years old. His mother spent lots of time reading with him and tutoring him, because this is what she thought he needed to become a cultured gentleman. When Doyle was ten years old he left home and went to the Jesuit
