See also: American Art VIEW IMAGE LIST "I would like to make something that is real in itself," [Arthur Dove] once wrote, "that does not remind anyone of any other thing, and that does not have to be explained like the letter A, for instance." And so, in a sense, he did. For Dove was the first American artist to paint a completely abstract picture, or rather a set of six; he did this in or around 1910, perhaps a little before Wassily Kandinsky 's first abstract compositions. The difference, however, was that whereas Kandinsky's abstract work fell at once into a cultural context in Europe, Dove's had none. So his abstract paintings changed nothing. His work was twice orphaned, by the general indifference of American taste and by his own reclusiveness. Thus it never had the chance to be tested against the great arguments of metropolitan modernism; it remained a sequence of lyric meditations on nature, some beautiful, others clumsy and naive, but always isolated. Dove's work was all about nature, from beginning to end. The son of a well-off brickmaker in Geneva, New York, he began his art career as an illustrator for the New York press and went, in 1907, on a year-and-a-half trip to Europe, spending most of it in Paris. There he fell in with the circle of American expatriates: Weber, Maurer

New York critics reviewing Arthur Dove's 1931 exhibition at An American Place, which included Ice and Clouds, noted a new assurance in the artist's work: "It is a happy business to record that these latest abstractions are way ahead of any-thing that this painter has showed us before"; "Arthur Dove ... comes forth with canvases more expansive, more commodious, than any from his brush that the writer has seen." I Apparently Dove had entered the decade with heightened resolve and confidence.
Raised in upstate New York, Dove studied law at Cornell University before deciding, in 1903 to pursue a career in art. He moved to New York City, securing work as a freelance magazine illustrator. A trip to Europe in 1908 introduced Dove to the vivid color and decorative patterning of Henri Matisse and the Fauves, as well as to the ordered pictorial structures of Paul C6zanne. Upon his return to New York, he joined the circle of progressive artists supported by Alfred Stieglitz, and began a series of small, daring non-objective paintings. These abstractions, first exhibited in 1912 presented observations and sensations distilled from the external world, rendered as bold, overlapping forms that denied illusionistic space while exuding a dynamic energy. Dove acknowledged nature as the basis of this art: "Then there was the search for a means of expression which did not depend upon representation. It should have order, size, intensity, spirit, nearer to the music of the eye.... One day I made a drawing of a hillside. The wind was blowing. I chose three forms from the planes of the sides of the trees, and three colors, and black and white. From these was made a rhythmic painting which expressed the spirit of the whole thing."

25 3/4 x 35 3/4 in. WAM About the Art The art of Arthur Dove blended his abiding love and connection to nature and natural forces with a deep interest in ideas and philosophies of modern art and life. While he was influenced early on by French Post-Impressionists and Fauve organic approach to abstractions from nature. He called his abstract paintings "extractions," because the compositions were based on the pulsating energy of nature. For Dove, this approach was a way to extract the underlying essence of thingsrendering the invisible visible. He was one of the earliest artists in either Western Europe or the United States to create purely abstract or non-objective paintings. He has often been compared to Wassily Kandinsky, the Russian artist whose studies of emotional and spiritual states led him to create non-objective art about the same time as Arthur Dove. Dove probably never saw Kandinsky's paintings until the Armory Show in 1913, several years after his own experiments with non-objective art. Unlike Kandinsky, however, Dove's paintings were always derived from the natural world.

14. Artist Biography: Arthur G. Dove
Arthur G. Dove. return to Artists List. Arthur Garfield Dove was a nativeof Canandaigua in the Finger Lakes region of upper New York State.
http://www.kgny.com/biographies/arthurgdove.html
Arthur G. Dove
Dove was both a true poet and artist, and in his determination to shake nature free of her forms in order to set free her spirit, he produced brilliant pioneer work. Not that he abandoned all elements of representation: he was too much in tune with the earth and its seasons for that, too much in tune with the apparitions of the sun and moon, with the smell of fields and animals, with time, light, weather, and all the colorful caprices of nature. Inspiration was rooted in these. What he painted was the rhythmic contours of hills, the jagged edges of landscapes, the swell of the land, the languidness of cows ruminating in pasture, the whiteness of the snow, the patterns of the sea as in Long Island Sound and the sweep of the wind. "I've been trying all day to memorize this storm," he once said, "so that I can paint it." When he began painting his storm and his other "extractions," he called them just that.
Arthur Garfield Dove was a native of Canandaigua in the Finger Lakes region of upper New York State. When he was born in 1880, the first of two sons, he was given the names Arthur Garfield after the Republican presidential candidates of that year. His father was a brick manufacturer of substantial means who was a leader of his conservative community and a parent totally unsuspecting of his son's extraordinary talents. Yet the young Dove's aptitude for drawing was very early evident and soon after graduation from Cornell University, he set his sights not on law as his father wished but on a career as a commercial illustrator. For a good five years he contributed to the

Dove's work was all about nature, from beginning to end. The son of a well-off brickmaker in Geneva, New York, he began his art career as an illustrator for the New York press and went, in 1907, on a year-and-a-half trip to Europe, spending most of it in Paris. There he fell in with the circle of American expatriates: Weber, Maurer, Bruce. Inspired by Fauvism, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris in 1908 and 1909; typical of his early work was The Lobster, 1908, painted in Provence - by then the locus classicus of Fauvism - and showing the influence of Cezanne in the heavy construction of the still life and of Matisse in its lush color and the twining, exuberant cabbage rose wallpaper behind. In 1913 Dove explained to a friend his process of abstraction (or, as he sometimes called it, "extraction"): the landscape slowly disappears like the Cheshire cat in the tree, leaving the "abstract" form behind.
The first step was to choose from nature a motif in color, and with that motif to paint from nature, the form still being objective.

Born in upstate New York in 1880, he was cut off by his father, a self-made contractor, when he gave up studying law to pursue art. He chose abstraction when the taste in this country ran strongly toward representational art. And he was barred for years from seeing his only child. But, recognizing his talent, a succession of mentors and patrons, including the avant-garde New York dealer Alfred Stieglitz, gave Dove enough support to keep making art. He was most at home on a farm or living aboard a sailboat, where he could observe the sun, moon, water and other natural phenomena, transforming what he saw into visual reveries. Among his masterpieces is Fog Horns of 1929, in which the haunting sound of the foghorns is evoked by overlapping concentric rings that seem to float above the water. For the first time in 20 years, a major exhibition of the paintings of Arthur Dove has been mounted.
