Lithographie (Steindruck) ist ein von Aloys Senefelder Otto Dix wurden als entartet verfemt, da er in seinen Bildern Elend und Grauen darstellte, also nicht dem national-sozialistischen Ideal von Kunst entsprach. Das Bild "Der Streichholzhändler I" wurde 1920 von Otto Dix entworfen. Otto Dix war dafür bekannt, Bilder zu malen, die die Nazis dann als Propaganda für Wehrpflichtverweigerung oder Kriegsgräuel-Propaganda ansahen. An diesem Bild mit dem Kriegskrüppel, der Streichhölzer verkauft, wird es besonders deutlich. Aus diesem Grund verhöhnte man auch 15 Arbeiten von ihm in der Münchener Ausstellung "Entartete Kunst". Dieses Bild allerdings befand sich in Privatbesitz und wurde 1959 von einem Künstler erworben. Wir haben insbesondere im Musikunterricht das Bild "Großstadt" von Otto Dix mit der "Biergartenszene"

CLICK HERE TO VIEW SELECTION OF PRINTS Otto Dix Dix embraced every aspect of Reality including its negative side. He was a critical and curious investigator who had a wicked sense of humor that contained a strong element of the grotesque. He often juxtaposed Horror and Humor. He had a particular interest in tattoos and believed that the face and hands revealed the most about human character. Between 1919-20, Dix made a few woodcuts in the Expressionist style but he abandoned this medium for drypoint and etching. He began etching in 1920 and especially liked the shades and tones one could achieve through this medium. Furthermore, it enabled him to portray physical deformation in minute detail. Dix produced a color lithographic series in 1923 but then did not return to this medium until after 1948. When Hitler assumed power in 1933, Dix was dismissed from his post at the Dresden Academy and banned from exhibiting his work. Works by Dix were included in the ìDegenerate Artî traveling exhibition in 1937.

His most famous paintings were Metropolis (1928) and a 1932 triptych Trench Warfare Otto Dix was born in Untermhaus, Germany, now a part of the city of Gera. In 1910 he entered the Dresden School of Arts and Crafts and supported himself as a portrait painter. When the First World War erupted, Dix enthusiastically volunteered for the German Army. He was taken to a field artillery regiment in Dresden. In the fall of 1915 he was assigned as a non-commissioned officer of a machine-gun unit in the Western front and took part of the Battle of Somme. He was seriously wounded several times. In 1917 his unit was transferred to the Eastern front until the end of hostilities with Russia. Back in the western front, he fought in the German Spring offensive. De Eerste Wereldoorlog bracht Otto Dix door in het leger, waarvoor hij zich vrijwillig had aangemeld. Na de oorlog kon hij zijn studie weer oppakken. In 1918 begon hij aan de kunstacademie in Dresden. Otto Dix behoorde tot de oprichters van de "Dresdener Secession – Gruppe 1919". Deze kunstenaarsgroep werd in 1919 opgericht. In 1920 nam Dix deel aan de Eerste Internationale DADA-messe in Berlijn. Terwijl hij zich al bewoog in belangrijke kunstenaarsgroepen studeerde Otto Dix ook gewoon door aan de academie. In 1922 sloot hij deze studie af. Vijf jaar later, in 1927, kreeg Dix een professoraat aangeboden van de kunstacademie in Dresden. Hij vervulde deze functie tot 1933. De Nazi's waren aan de macht gekomen en hielden er een andere smaak op na. Het werk van veel kunstenaars werd als ontaard bestempeld en vele kunstenaars verloren hun baan als professor, leraar of adviseur. Dit overkwam ook Otto Dix. In 1937 werden 260 van zijn werken in beslag genomen. De kunstenaar trok zich terug in Hemmenhoven aan het Bodenmeer. Na de oorlog kon Otto Dix weer aan de slag als leraar. In 1950 werd hem een professoraat aan de kunstacademie van Düsseldorf gegund.
