Robert Victor Felix Delaunay - Orphismus (1885 - 1941)
Delaunay wurde am 12. April 1885 in Paris geboren. Oktober 1941 in Montpellier. Home Kunstarchiv

Works from the Centre Pompidou in the Hamburg Kunsthalle
10 September - 21 November 1999 Many major museum collections have been shown in the Hamburg Kunsthalle: 1994 Masterpieces from the collection of the Guggenheim Museum, New York
1996 "Turner in Germany" from the Tate Gallery, London
1998 Paintings of the Russian avant-garde from the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg. We are now delighted to present works by Robert and Sonia Delaunay from the Centre Pompidou in Paris. A representative selection of works by both artists illustrates their transition from objectivity to abstraction (1912/13) and their later ventures into applied artistic spheres, whereby the creative interplay between Robert and Sonia Delaunay, probably the most famous artistic couple of the 20th century, plays a central role. The some 70 works which make up the exhibition belong to those donated by Sonia Delaunay and her son Charles to the Centre Pompidou, who have agreed to let the works tour to only one venue - the Hamburg Kunsthalle. Additional works from private collections round off the exhibition. An extensive exhibition catalogue, which includes a number of essays and selected writings, is being prepared in close cooperation with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, (DM 39,-).

Robert Delaunay, letter to August Macke
Direct observation of the luminous essence of nature is for me indispensable. I do not necessarily mean observation with palette in hand, although I am not opposed to notations taken from nature itself. I do much of my work from nature, "before the subject," as it is commonly called. But what is of great importance to me is observation of the movement of colors. Only in this way have I found the laws of complementary and simultaneous contrasts of colors which sustain the very rhythm of my vision. In this movement of colors I find the essence, which does not arise from a system, or an a priori theory. For me, every man distinguishes himself by his essence his personal movement, as opposed to that which is universal. That is what I found in your works that I saw this winter at Cologne. You are not in direct communication with nature, the only source of inspiration directed toward beauty.' Such communication affects representation in its most vital and critical aspect. This communication alone, by the comparison of the antagonisms, rivalries, movements which give birth to decisive moments, permits the evolution of the soul, whereby a man realizes himself on earth. It is impossible to be concerned with anything else in art.

In 1902, after secondary education, he apprenticed in a studio for theater sets in Belleville. In 1903 he started painting and by 1904 was exhibiting, that year and in 1906 at the Salon d'Automne and from 1904 until World War I at the Salon des Indépendants. Between 1905 and 1907 Delaunay became friendly with Henri Rousseau and Jean Metzinger and studied the color theories of M E Chevreul; he was then painting in Neo-Impressionist manner. Paul Cézanne's work also influenced Delaunay around this time. From 1907-08 he served in the military in Laon and upon returning to Paris he had contact with the Cubists. The period 1909-10 saw the emergence of Delaunay's personal style: he painted his first Eiffel Tower in 1909. In 1910 Delaunay married the painter Sonia Terk, who became his collaborator on many projects. Delaunay's participation in exhibitions in Germany and association with advanced artists working there began in 1911, the year Vasily Kandinsky invited him to participate in the first Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) exhibition in Munich. At this time he became friendly with Guillaume Apollinaire, Albert Gleizes, and Henri Le Fauconnier. In 1912 Delaunay's first solo show took place at the Galerie Barbazanges, Paris, and he began his Windows pictures. Inspired by the lyricism of color of the Windows, Apollinaire invented the term "Orphism" or "Orphic Cubism" to describe Delaunay's work. In 1913 Delaunay painted his

Or search the encyclopaedia: Delaunay, Robert French painter. He was a pioneer of abstract art. With his wife Sonia Delaunay-Terk, he developed a style known as Orphism , an early variation of cubism, focusing on the effects of pure colour contrasts. Working from the colour theories of the French chemist Michel Chevreul, Delaunay and his wife explored the simultaneous effects of light on disclike planes of radiant, contrasting colour, their aim being to produce a visual equivalent to music. Delaunay painted several series 1912, notably Circular Forms (almost purely abstract) and Simultaneous Windows (inspired by Parisian cityscapes). His art was described as Orphist (essentially musical) by Guillaume Apollinaire. He carried out a huge decorative scheme (ten large reliefs in colour and a vast Rhythm ) for the Palace of Air and Railway Pavilion of the Paris Exposition of 1937, and with other artists, including his wife, the Russian artist Sonia
