. . a festmény elsõsorban a mûvészi képzelet terméke.

Race Horses
1885-88 (100 Kb); Pastel on panel, 11 7/8 x 16 in; Philadelphia Museum of Art Race horses and Jockeys, even more than dancers, occupied Degas throughout his long career as an artist. Paul-Andre Lemoisne catalogued some ninety-one works in this category, spanning the period from 1860 to 1900a number that did not include Degas's equestrian waxes and bronzesand they embrace a range of sizes and mediums. As with the Paris Opera, the spectacle of the turf gave Degas the base material from which to forge images of modern life in an alloy that fused references to the art of the past with details observed from life and scrupulously documented. But more than any other of his subjects, this was a genre that fed upon itself and spawned countless variations and adjustments. From a repertory established very early, Degas proceeded to select individual jockeys and rearrange them, to repeat poses and refine them, until this hermetic world lost all connection with the reality of the race track... This diminutive composition of Race Horses , which falls toward the end of the first phase in this development, is immediately distinguished by its unusual support. It is pastel, and not oil, on panel: the wood here, possibly light mahogany, is the kind that might be used for cigar boxes. Although pastel on panel is not a unique combination, it is extremely rare in Degas's oeuvre, and testifies to his continuing pleasure in experimenting with techniques and supports.

Although he participated in all the Impressionist exhibitions except the seventh, he sometimes caused disunity within the group and was not deeply involved in their technical innovations - being more concerned with linear and compositional issues. His subject matter ranged from horse-racing and ballet to cafe and brothel scenes. He was also a keen photographer, and in his old age turned largely to sculpture. A lifelong bachelor, Degas was dandified, witty and opinionated.

Since the characters are known, this picture could be considered as an example of Degas's portraiture or, alternatively, as a characteristic glimpse of the Parisian café. The woman is the actress Ellen Andrée, the man Marcellin Desboutin, painter, engraver and, at the same time, celebrated Bohemian character. The café where they are taking their refreshment is the Café de la Nouvelle-Athènes. Desboutin - a popular figure - seems to have led the move of those concerned with the arts from their previous rendez-vous, the Café Guerbois, to the Nouvelle-Athènes. It was frequented by Manet and Degas, by some critics and literary men as well as painters and had an interested observer from across the Channel in the young George Moore. The painting shows Degas's favourite device of placing the figures off-centre with a large intervening area of space in the foreground. A forceful and original composition results from the mode of arrangement and the dark but harmoniously related tones of colour and shadow. © 11 Sep 1995

Teachers : Louis Lamothe (@ the Ecole des Beaux-Arts)

Interesting Stuff : Degas is best known for bringing us images of bodies in motion. They may be horses, they might be bathers or laundresses or (most famously) ballet dancers, but all of them have been frozen in a moment of movement and exertion. A fan of photography and Japanese prints, his off-center empty spaces and arrangement of figures tends to draw you into the paintings as if you were an unseen spectator to the scene. After seeing painting after painting of young ballet dancers, Degas' work starts to seem downright yoyeuristic - and I'm not talking about reading the newspaper over somebody's shoulder voyeurism. I'm talking about disturbing voyeurism, like that uncle nobody likes who stares down your girlfriend's shirt at Thanksgiving, or the scary old guy in the park watching kids. However, as intimate as these scenes are, we have to remember that these

98. Edgar Degas
1834 HilaireGermain-edgar De Gas is born on July 19, 1834, at 8 rue Saint The family name degas had been changed to De Gas by some family members in Naples
http://www.metmuseum.org/explore/Degas/html/indexl.html
Chronology of the Artist's Life Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas is born on July 19, 1834, at 8 rue Saint-Georges in Paris. His father, Auguste, a banker, was French, and his mother, Célestine, an American from New Orleans. The family name "Degas" had been changed to "De Gas" by some family members in Naples and France in order to sound more aristocratic; the preposition indicated a name derived from land holdings. Degas went back to using the original spelling sometime after 1870, and that is how we spell his name today. Degas's friends Ludovic Halévy and Paul Valpinçon are both born the same year. At age eighteen and a half Degas receives permission to copy at the Louvre in Paris. In order to develop their own skills, nineteenth-century artists copied paintings by the old masters, studying their drawing and painting techniques. Copies Raphael paintings at the Louvre. Degas is taken by Édouard Valpinçon, the father of his friend Paul and an art collector, to visit the painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867). Degas admired Ingres's work and believed, as the great master did, in the primary importance of drawing in the creation of a work of art. During the eighteenth century, much was made of the rivalry between Ingres the draftsman and Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863), who placed greater emphasis on the role of color in painting. Degas was enamored of both artists and acquired their works for his own art collection.
